Meet Pandora... who got into a bit of a tiff and came off second best. She had lacerations to her upper lip with some partial thickness wounds to her lower lip aswell.
After some sedation, local anaesthetic and trimming back the wounds to so they can be sutured she was far more comfortable and bounced back to her normal self in no time.
As the alpacas at this home are loved so much, even the old girl 'Angel' with some arthritis issues and the newborn cria (baby alpaca) got little coats to keep them warm during the cold nights and mornings.
Did you know that when an alpaca gives birth, it is called 'unpacking'!

Some days the drives takes me to hidden areas, miniature donkeys and trying to beat the alpacas to the front gate!!
Routine visits for vaccinations, drenching and herd health checks are important for the health and wellbeing of livestock. Most things can be performed by owners but there is occasionally times where vets are needed. These guys were all given clean bills of health!

Patient of the month of May! Yes, very late update but still worth showing this little cutie anyway. This little man came off second best presumably with barbed wire fencing which had punctured and ruptured his eye.
Unfortunately there is no other treatment apart from removal of the eye which was performed under heavy sedation and local anaesthesia. He was such a brave and well mannered boy and reports were he didn't miss a beat after his surgery.

Due to a broken down vehicle, vet services are not available this week. I ran the gauntlet long enough as some might have been aware and it's caught up eventually 😅!
Services should be returned to normal next week! This means that unfortunately there is also no emergency services available over the long weekend. Alternate numbers will be provided for emergencies. Have a safe and enjoyable easter!

🎉This month marks 12 MONTHS of PARKES VET VISITS🎉. It's been 192 hours of driving, 17,424 km's and many late night/early morning departures & arrivals but it's been worth it to help get some basic pet needs taken care of.
It's been great to see the friendly faces of Parkes. Thank you for being so accommodating and to Petstock Country Parkes for hosting me at each visit to help the pets and livestock for their basic vet care. They probably didn't expect to have the odd lamb, chicken, rabbit or even a piglet!! come through their doors but it's been great seeing them all.
For appointments you can book online, just click here: https://coasttocountry.apse2.ezyvet.com/external/portal
or call 0474277500.
Thank you again for the Parkes hospitality!

Three Day Sickness (BEF- Bovine Ephemeral Fever) has hit northern NSW earlier than normal. The mid north coast has a very small window of opportunity to vaccinate before it hits which is now!
Due to lower numbers of affected cattle in the last few years as well as earlier detection in NSW this year, this could pose some difficulties to producers. It looks initially, very similar to tick paralysis which has been hitting cattle hard the last few weeks (see below).

The vaccine for BEF requires two doses 2-4 weeks apart if previously unvaccinated and then a booster every 12 months.

TICKS: Remember to be vigilant with tick protection this spring and summer. Check the product for how many tags need to be applied per cow (some require 2 tags) and some only protect for 40+ days. Check backlines for proper application methods aswell.

The Hunter Local Land Services District Veterinarian team have advised Hunter livestock producers that Bovine Ephemeral Fever (BEF), also known as three-day sickness, has recently been confirmed by laboratory testing in cattle on the NSW far north coast. This detection is earlier in the season than....

Hi Parkes, with the fireworks that is set to be let off tonight and possibly a frightening experience for your pets, here is a non-medicated form of anti-anxiety treatment.
Pop down to Petstock Country Parkes to see how Zylkene can help your pet tonight. Easy to administer and can help ease the anxiety for tonight and other stressful situations (vet visits, nail clipping, boarding, car rides etc).

You know how babies are always far more relaxed after feeding? 🍼 Well, when cats and dogs drink milk, the same phenomenon occurs.

Why? Great question!

Zylkene® contains a natural milk protein called alpha casozepine that has been clinically proven to calm and relax animals. Alpha-casozepine delivers ‘calming messages’ to the brain via the body’s natural ‘messenger’ system (scientifically known as Neurotransmitters) to naturally settle your cat or dog.

03/11/2023

This is the time of year to start acting on limiting exposure to biting insects for both West Nile Virus and Summer/QLD itch. Repellents, rugging and stabling (where possible) will help decrease the risk of biting insects. Sometimes paddock your horses where there is less still water or slow moving creeks where insect larvae are likely to hatch can also help.

West Nile Virus (WNV) is a mosquito borne virus belonging to the genus Flavivirus. A strain of WNV, Kunjin virus is endemic in parts of Australia and has been present for many years. In 2011, there was a large outbreak of neurological disease in horses in South East Australia caused by a variant of the Australian strain. It was confirmed in a horse from the Central West region in February 2017, with further infections confirmed in the Hunter and Riverina regions in February 2022. Practice vector control!

Pinkeye: don't miss the boat on preventing your stock from Pinkeye this summer through vaccinating with !
By the end of September, it's getting too late!
With the increased need for feeding cattle, bringing them in closer proximity around supplementary feed and water sources, dusty conditions, any stubble that remains or hay which can irritate eyes during grazing, it is important to minimise the risk of contracting pinkeye. These risk factors all contribute to the spread of the disease through flies. With appropriate and regular fly control and using Piligard vaccine can help reduce pain and discomfort in your herd, lessen treatment costs and continue weight maintenance/gain by allowing feed intake amounts to remain the same.
Once pain begins, cattle will stop eating, lose weight, increasing your feed conversion ratios and this means more $$$ for you especially through drier drought-like periods.
