๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›๐ŸTIGER SNAKELETTE SEASON๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ–ค

Noongar Names- Moyop, Noorn.
Scientific name- Notechis scutatus

It's that time of year when the Tiger snakes are giving birth!
Tiger snakes are Ovoviviparous, meaning they give birth to live young known as "neonates" "snakelettes", or just "juveniles"

Tiger snakes give birth between March to mid May, with an average 15-30 neonates in a litter and believe me when I tell you that these babies are absolutely adorable! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ
They're stout and teeny at around 10cm long. Tiny compared to their adult size of up to 1.2 meters that we get around here in Perth.

They can be a vivid black & yellow stripe patten, black & orange, brown or jet black.
Being a dark ectothermic animal definitely has its advantages as they readily absorb light energy that manifests as heat more quickly than lighter coloured animals. This allows them to move around in cooler weather also.

Although absolutely gorgeous to admire, its best done from a distance as their venom contains neurotoxins, myotoxins, haemolysins and procoagulants. The average venom yield is 35mg, however the record yeild was 180mg!
All that delivered by fangs 3.5-5 mm long is going to cause a mischief, and if not properly treated, Tiger snake venom can cause death.

Although this all sounds very scary, the chances of being bitten by one is very rare.
They are a timid snake, that will choose flight over fight at every opportunity that they can.

As we tower over them, they see us as a potential predator, so they want to skeedaddle away from us to hide as quickly as possible.
If we insist on bothering them, they will put on a warning display in defense.
This consists of flattening their bodies to appear wider and flaring out their necks, much like a cobra does.
Teamed up with bluff striking and hissing loudly, it's an Oscar worthy dramatic performance indeed!
I personally think they look comically like animated, flattened road kill though ๐Ÿ˜…

In any case, please give them the respect they deserve, and leave them alone.
Keep your cats indoors or in secure outdoor enclosures.
Walk your dogs on leads and enrol them in Snake Avoidance Training.
Comment below if you need a list of dog trainers that provide this.

If you see one in your house, garden or business and need it to be relocated, then call me on 0433 590 721.

Tiger snakes love a good feed of mice, rats, lizards & frogs. They eat fish too and are fantastic swimmers, able to stay under water without coming up for air for 9 minutes!
So if you have a pond in your garden, please exercise caution by wearing decent boots when working around it.

As always, follow my page for advice on how we can co exist safely with our gorgeous native wildlife, and for dates for my free community Snake Safety Information Sessions.

If you have a volunteer group within the City of Rockingham, I'd love to organise a free session for your team.

Enquiries for workplace tool box Safety talks can submitted by call/text on 0433 590 721.

This sunset stunner was relocated from a home in Port Kennedy.
Thank you to Carol, who did everything right when she spotted this one in her yard.
She immediately locked her dog away & called me.

Hatchling dugites are so soft & delicate.
They make perfect snacks for birds, some lizards, other LARGER snakes & even some spiders.

So what do you do when you're so delicious that everything wants to eat you, but you NEED sunlight to heat your little body so you can function?
You evolve to be born with a stylish black hat on, thats what you do!
Then you can hide your vulnerable self beneath a safe shelter & just poke your head out.
That black solar panel absorbs heat efficiently when you need it the most.

As they grow bigger & less vulnerable, they don't need to hide as much, so the black starts fading out, like you can see on this one here.
So by looking at the colour of its head, we can tell that this one hatched at the very beginning of the season & has been doing very well for itself.
Great news, as only about 2 hatchlings out of a nest of 25-30 will make it to adulthood.
We really need to give these guys the best chance to survive that we can.

I had the honour of being invited to join Perth Reptile Company's new Venomous Snake Handling & Relocating course yesterday!
I finally got to meet the brilliant Adam Firstenberg, whom I have been speaking with over the phone & via text since 2019, but have never actually met in the flesh until now ๐Ÿ˜

The course was fantastic! A perfect blend of information, humour & practice. A fun and relaxed learning environment that instantly put people at ease & had everyone leaning forward in their chairs with enthusiasm.
One participant was scared of snakes at the beginning, and by the end she was breaming with confidence.

I thought the the real life applications & staged scenarios PRC set up to teach the participants to gently catch snakes using the hook & bag method, was a stroke of genius!
It really gave people the opportunity to manoeuvre around obstacles confidently to achieve the catch safetly for themselves & the snake.

Definitely a course worth doing if you were interested in learning more about our Reptile buddies.
A great Birthday present idea for a Reptile enthusiast, a practical course for anyone that lives rural & has snakes frequent their properties and the perfect course for any business looking to train staff to safely remove snakes from a workplace.

Thank you Perth Reptile Company for inviting me to join in. It was an absolute blast! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ

โšก๏ธโšก๏ธFLASHBACK FRIDAYโšก๏ธโšก๏ธ

January 31st 2025
This was my first Elapid back from maternity leave, and she was absolutely perfect ๐Ÿฅฐ
6 weeks after giving birth to baby Scarlett, I was sent this job that was just down the road from me.
Couldn't have asked for a better behaved snake.
She was seeking refuge from the heat in a Telstra pit where some workers were trying to do some work on the NBN in the neighbourhood.
Thank you to Tessaโ€™s Reptile Services & Coastal Captures Snake Relocators for getting the job through to me.
It was a convenient 4 minute drive from my house, a quick catch & release for this beautiful pale, spotted beauty.
Back to the sand dunes to continue her very important work of keeping the introduced rodent population under control.

โš ๏ธDO NOT TOUCH SNAKESโš ๏ธ
-DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RELOCATE THEM YOURSELF.
-DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SCARE THEM AWAY.

We have recieved too many calls from people that have attempted to move a snake themselves and things have gone horribly wrong.

We've lost countless hatchlings from people picking them up with BBQ tongs and crushing them, or people sweeping them into containers using brooms.
These babies are incredibly soft and delicate. Handling them incorrectly causes internal injuries and they die very painful deaths.

If you have a hatchling in your home or business and you want to keep it contained until a relocator arrives, WEARING COVERED SHOES, you can wet a towel, wring it out thoroughly and gently pop it over the snake.
The cool towel slows them down a bit and the darkness and weight makes them feel safe, so they will most likely stay put.
Or, pop a container upside down over the top of it until we get there.
Please do not try to sweep it into the container using a broom, you will injure it.
These methods are only recommended for a snake up to one foot (30cm) long.

DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, ATTEMPT TO CATCH AND CONTAIN A SNAKE LONGER THAN 30CM YOURSELF.
Too many times I've attended a job where a snake was contained in an inappropriate tub and the snake has easily gotten out by the time I've arrived.
I have attended a job where a very large, highly venomous snake, was being transported in an inappropriate container, when it got out IN THE CAR.
I was then called to attend & had to get an extremely scared and dangerously defensive snake out of a confined area.

By attempting to catch or contain a snake yourself, you've now put us ALL in danger.
What would have been a straight forward job has now become even more dangerous because you have scared and possibly injured an animal that otherwise, would have been quite calm to deal with.
Now the snake is scared and is more likely to act defensively.
The same goes when people try to flush the snake out with a broom or by throwing things at it.
A once peaceful animal is now a defensive animal.
Even if you DO manage to relocate it yourself, you've most likely given that snake a death sentence by translocating it too far or to the wrong place.

Not to mention the unnecessary danger you've put yourself in. Unless you are a professional, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO IDENTIFY A SNAKE YOURSELF.
We see it ALL the time on the community pages and it's frustrating as hell.
A member will post a photo on a fb community group page & every man and his dog plays "The guessing game." That is a dangerous game to play in Australia where we have so many highly venomous species of snake. More often than not, people are wrong.
Even when we've identified ourselves as professionals and given the correct answer, people will STILL argue with us.
Don't post your photos on the neighbourhood chat groups. Send them to your local relocator or to Australian Snake Identification, Education + Advocacy - ASIEA.

Here are some stats taken from ASIEA about a 10 year study by The Australian Snake Bite Project (2005-2015)
Some of their data included:
โ€ข 1548 snakebite patients were recruited from all Australian states and territories.
โ€ข 73% of these patients identified as male.
โ€ข The median patient age was 38 years old.
โ€ข Only 11% were snake handlers.
โ€ข In this time, there were 23 deaths. Only three were snake handlers.
โ€ข 18 of these deaths were males.
โ€ข 10 of these patients didnโ€™t even make it to hospital before passing away.

Reptile consultants KNOW how to correctly identify a snake.
We know what area the snake has come from, and where to return it.
We have specialised equipment.
We have snake bite First Aid kits
We know correct Snake bite First Aid procedures.
๐ŸŒง๐ŸŒง๐ŸŒง
This picture is of a snake that was seen crossing a parking lot last week.
It had ventured over from the golf course next door and was minding its own business, when people started throwing things at it.
It was trying to get back to its home that was about 3 meters away, but it was surrounded on all sides being pelted with rocks, sticks and bottles....by adults...grown ADULTS in front of their children. What the hell kind of lesson is that to be teaching your kids?!
Shame on you!
An angel of a women put an end to the violence and called me.
Unfortunately by the time I arrived this beautiful animal was so exhausted and in so much pain, it could barely move.
I caught it and brought it home so I could put it in a different transport tub to get it medical attention, but it sadly passed away before we made it to my house.

Put this number into your phone and save it under SNAKE- 0433 590 721.
Available 24/7.
I do Community Snake safety information sessions, private home consultations and Tool box talks for business, so follow my page to keep up to date with upcoming events.

Shout out to the team at Bestbar Reinforcements in East Rockingham for calling me out today to pick up this shy guy.
Absolutely terrified of the big scary world, this little one took refuge under a HUGE potted plant outside the front of the store.
The team were amazing & did all the right things by standing back a couple of meters & keeping a few eyes on the area at all angles until I was able to attend.
This industrial zone is surrounded by bushland & there's a bit of construction happening at the moment, which sadly, has displaced more than a few native animals.
Companies like this make all the difference when they show respect for nature & call a relocator to help the littlest little friend out.
Thank you to Dan & all of the team.

Some photos of the sweetest little guy that got lost in a backyard in Port Kennedy.
The family that found it are return clients and they're such a lovely family.
They do everything perfectly to make my job easier and as responsible dog owners, the families fluffiest member has completed Snake Avoidance training which not only saves its life, but saves the lives of our native wildlife too!
The kids helped to look after baby Scarlett so I could tub this one up for transport and release.
Could not ask for a better family to work with.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being so wonderful and saving this little life ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ
Although tiny, these hatchlings are SO important for so many reasons.

This stunning serpent gave me a bit of a run around at Boom Logistics in East Rockingham ๐Ÿ˜…
The team there helped me move pallets of wood around while this clever customer darted between the planks.

This business is a regular one I visit as it backs on to bushland. Every year, as the hatchlings are on the move, a few of them find themselves on the property. Lucky for the snakes, the crew are good people who look out for these little guys so they don't get hurt.
They keep eyes on them and call me to move them back to the bush.

This knowledgeable noodle was found perusing the book corner in a classroom.

I absolutely love how well the staff handle snakes at this school.
By the time I get there, everything is always flawlessly under control.

Even the students are awesome!
I approached the office juggling my equipment today, and a young gentleman jumped up to open the door for me.
Then another little legend took me to his classroom where the snake was.

Our friend Kim was stationed as snake sentry with another teacher (I'm so sorry, I missed your name.) Both watching either side of the area where the snake was last seen.
I found the studious Serpent hiding from us big, scary humans beneath a cushion.
Quickly popped it into the bag, and we were off to release our Ophidian friend in a more suitable environment.
