๐ค๐๐TIGER SNAKELETTE SEASON๐๐๐ค
Noongar Names- Moyop, Noorn.
Scientific name- Notechis scutatus
It's that time of year when the Tiger snakes are giving birth!
Tiger snakes are Ovoviviparous, meaning they give birth to live young known as "neonates" "snakelettes", or just "juveniles"
Tiger snakes give birth between March to mid May, with an average 15-30 neonates in a litter and believe me when I tell you that these babies are absolutely adorable! ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฐ
They're stout and teeny at around 10cm long. Tiny compared to their adult size of up to 1.2 meters that we get around here in Perth.
They can be a vivid black & yellow stripe patten, black & orange, brown or jet black.
Being a dark ectothermic animal definitely has its advantages as they readily absorb light energy that manifests as heat more quickly than lighter coloured animals. This allows them to move around in cooler weather also.
Although absolutely gorgeous to admire, its best done from a distance as their venom contains neurotoxins, myotoxins, haemolysins and procoagulants. The average venom yield is 35mg, however the record yeild was 180mg!
All that delivered by fangs 3.5-5 mm long is going to cause a mischief, and if not properly treated, Tiger snake venom can cause death.
Although this all sounds very scary, the chances of being bitten by one is very rare.
They are a timid snake, that will choose flight over fight at every opportunity that they can.
As we tower over them, they see us as a potential predator, so they want to skeedaddle away from us to hide as quickly as possible.
If we insist on bothering them, they will put on a warning display in defense.
This consists of flattening their bodies to appear wider and flaring out their necks, much like a cobra does.
Teamed up with bluff striking and hissing loudly, it's an Oscar worthy dramatic performance indeed!
I personally think they look comically like animated, flattened road kill though ๐
In any case, please give them the respect they deserve, and leave them alone.
Keep your cats indoors or in secure outdoor enclosures.
Walk your dogs on leads and enrol them in Snake Avoidance Training.
Comment below if you need a list of dog trainers that provide this.
If you see one in your house, garden or business and need it to be relocated, then call me on 0433 590 721.
Tiger snakes love a good feed of mice, rats, lizards & frogs. They eat fish too and are fantastic swimmers, able to stay under water without coming up for air for 9 minutes!
So if you have a pond in your garden, please exercise caution by wearing decent boots when working around it.
As always, follow my page for advice on how we can co exist safely with our gorgeous native wildlife, and for dates for my free community Snake Safety Information Sessions.
If you have a volunteer group within the City of Rockingham, I'd love to organise a free session for your team.
Enquiries for workplace tool box Safety talks can submitted by call/text on 0433 590 721.
Let's all work together to look after the littlest little guys ๐ฅบ๐ฅฐ
