Skittles (aka “Fat Buddha”) prefers to sleep in a crate inside. She only likes one crate and believes it is her crate. At the moment her crate is being used by a chicken who is actually unwell, so Skittles needs to sleep outside with her family again much to her disgust. She prefers to sleep on a nice comfy blanket each night though and makes a racket until it’s offered.

*Skittles was found as a stray with one leg cut off below the knee and all her wing feathers crudely cut off. When she arrived she was so worried and frightened. She has now blossomed in to her true self and will never be treated as nothing again.

Mandinka Food Court arrived in late February. She was found as a stray and handed in to the council where Liz from Melbourne Chicken Rescue picked her up. She was skinny, smelly, had scaly leg mites and was so worried about everything. Fast forward to today and she is one very confident hen who believes she owns the absolute world here. She is one of my "explorer" hens, meaning she will stray further than the others wanting to look at everything.

The left photo is pure neglect. The right photo is sanctuary - real chicken sanctuary which involves a name, vet care and being seen always.

Yesterday’s LP News - Chicken Vet Day Edition

Photo One - Mrs Mangle got acupuncture and an implant whilst her sidekick, Tontiney, watched on.

Photo Two - The Henderson Kid implanted.

Photo Three - Pearl loves her acupuncture.

Photo Four - Plumcake implanted again. This beautiful hen arrived from an abattoir in 2019. It’s been such a gift to have her here so long.

*Used all five of the implants you guys funded yesterday. Another five are on their way. It’s a huge and never ending cost of a sanctuary when it’s full of hens, so I appreciate it so much. Thank you also to Lizzie, who cleaned my coops yesterday ❤️❤️

Sanctuary means safety. My sanctuary also means a home for life. No more being dumped from home to home, no more being left on a street because they don’t lay eggs, no more standing in a wire cage, no more having to “pay the rent” with their eggs. They arrive here and then they die here. Sanctuary and home.

Today’s LP News - Let’s Hear It For The Boys Edition

Photo One - Roger Ramjet taking a quick sunbathe. He very rarely does this as he’s always on the clock, working hard for the money (the hens).

Photo Two - Johnny Two Hats (aka “Mr Fraggle”) takes the door spot at night time to ward off danger…(we all know nothing is scarier than a rooster who looks like a mop)

Photo Three - Elton John is doing so well. Every Friday he spends a day at my vet and gets laser treatment and has a hydrotherapy session. He’s doing so well, in fact I’ve never seen him happier.

Photo Four - Spartacus has appointed an assistant hen, Inspector Gadget, to help him peck me at night whilst I check everyone over. Team “Death To Kenneally In The Dark” is their secret name.

EDIT - As of 11.30 am I have the $880 for ten implants. Amazing! Thank you! Love you all!

IMPLANT EMERGENCY!

I know I said I was going to do a fundraiser, but bloody hell, I very rarely sit down, so I’m going to ask here nicely first!

I’m currently out of implants. Hormone implants (Suprelorin implants) save hens lives who have eyp and/or reproductive tumours etc. I have over 100 hens here and I go through so many of these constantly. It’s a huge financial strain, but I must have them to stop these girls from suffering. I do not implant all hens, only the hens with issues.

I’m looking for $880 to get me ten implants (two packs of five at $439.99 each)

The southern Oracle in this image is only alive today because of implants. She’s constantly monitored and checked so her reproductive system doesn’t kill her. She came from a cage egg farm and was absolutely traumatised and deserves to live out her life without dying horrifically from a reproductive issue.

My love and passion lies with ex commercial egg layers but with that love comes a huge responsibility and financial strain to help them live out their lives in peace.

If you can help me help them, I’d be forever grateful.

Smurfy - very proud of her filthy face and letting me know very clearly that she doesn't need a bath as her moustache gives her character. Sadly, I will be bathing her today as this little lady gets filthy fast as she runs out of energy to really bathe properly. Smurfy came in with such severe scaly leg mite on her legs that quite a few of her toes had to be taken off. She also has a heart murmur that seems to make her unable to gain weight. Smurfy wont be here for a long time, but the life she has here is certainly fabulous and much better than the life she lived neglected in a backyard for so long. Smurfy knows her name as "Smurfy Urfy" or "Smurfy The Urfy" and she waits very impatiently every morning in her inside crate for her piece of tomato that is her lifeforce. Smurfy loves tomato forever.

Then and Now

The Gremlin showed up in my shed in April. A terrified little guy who was yet to grow in to his ears. He chose his home and I’ve had no say in it. He saw the sign above my head that says “soft touch will feed you” and took a chance.

As I sit here and type, I'm looking over at Tontine in her little bed. She's looking at me whilst her beloved friend Mrs Mangle is eating every bit of food she can find in the four bowls of food I have out for their breakfast. Tontine however doesn't eat quite as easily as Mangle does, it takes her a while to want to eat and she needs my encouragement. My words of "Are you chowing down? Are you going to chow down. Time for chowing" are the words that make her pop her little beak in to the sea of grain, pellets, oats and corn and start happily eating. Chickens are so clever, they learn words, they read your energy and they know their (and your) routines better than you do. Such amazing little birds who are not given the credit they deserve.

Goodnight from my most precious little Pearl. Pearl arrived early last year with her beloved rooster, Captain Nemo, after being found as strays. Both had terrible heart murmurs from the day they arrived. Nemo’s heart took him out a few months after arrival and Pearl grieved him deeply. Her heart is so bad that we really don’t know how she’s still alive. She’s slowing down lately and prefers to sit most of the day but she loves dinner time with a passion even though her weight keeps dropping. Pearl is medicated several times a day for her heart and gets monthly acupuncture. She’s so tough. That tiny little body is being pushed onwards by that fierce, determined mind that refuses to give up. ❤️

Huge thank you to Jackie, Sandra and the artist who didn’t leave a name! These will help keep all these demanding overlords in corn, oats, lettuce, weetbix and licorice!! And the Bunnings card will go towards a new wire enclosure.

So grateful for the help ❤️🙏❤️

Today’s LP News!

Photo One - The moment Smurfy realised this is the way she might die….(joke, she didn’t, but I had to take that right out of her mouth and chop them all up in to tiny pieces).

Photo Two - Just Greedy and Molly Dog grazing together on old Lucerne.

Photo Three - Spartacus loaded everyone perfectly on first try.

Photo Four - India had another dental today. She has them more regularly than the other horses because her teeth are so bad.

I wore his name tag around my neck for years after that day I had to make the decision to let him go. He was my right hand man since I was 11 years old. These days, that tag hangs off my keys. I no longer need it so close to me, but I always need to know where it is. I learnt to keep my beautiful border collie in a part of my heart that I could call apon when I needed him. I learnt that nothing can stop time and death and parting, but I also learnt how to keep everything he meant to me and taught me within my heart to keep me moving forward.

Buddy taught me so much about myself, so much about photography, so much about dogs, so much about animals, so much about responsibility and so much about letting go. He truly shaped who I am now. Today he has been gone 18 years, but whenever I grab my keys and feel that tag I can see him, running through the long grass of the paddocks back to my side.

Favourite Faces Of Saturday

Photo One - Bullseye. Rescued as a chick from a hatchery. She was found walking around outside the shed.

Photo Two - Spartacus. Sold at a market as a newly hatched chick. Surrendered by a family when they realised keeping chicks alive is actually difficult.

Photo Three - San Remo Al Dente. A stray who found her way here. She loves spaghetti and hates small chickens.

Photo Four - Weird Al. A stray who found herself in the lost dogs home. She’s a pure delight and so odd.

Darling little man, Elton John, had his first hydrotherapy session yesterday and some laser treatment. He did so well. So proud of this brave boy. I’ve never, ever seen Elton stand this straight and tall. Ever. Big thanks to volunteer, friend and vet nurse champion Sally, to Dr Gloria and to you guys for helping me fund giving these chickens the best chance of a happy ending.

Elton John made a wish on this dandelion this morning. He wished to be able to walk straight and tall without wobbling all over the place. Elton was rescued by Edgar's Mission in January, 2023 from a silkie meat farm in Sea Lake. Elton had been living in a small cage with other roosters for who knows how long. He now lives here with his little flock of his three beloved hens, but can't walk too far because his legs just wont let him. He has acupuncture monthly and last Friday he had laser therapy to see if it helped. It helped a little but not enough. Tomorrow he starts his first session of hydrotherapy to see if it might help him. Let's hope this dear little man's wish comes true.

*Fundraiser on the way. Once again, I’ve been sidetracked with sanctuary work over admin. Like always 😬

This is Sunny. She’s an Isa Brown who was rescued from a cage egg farm in 2020. It’s almost her 4 year freedom anniversary. Sunny likes to lay her egg when the sun comes up and runs to the other chicken house to get to her favourite nesting box.

I love Isa Browns and they really are my speciality here at LP. I committed to giving a great life to as many as I could 13 years ago and I have done that and I continue to do that. This is what I do brilliantly in my life. As many of you know, Isa Browns are literally bred to lay themselves to death. They have been selectively bred to do this for human’s insatiable greed for eggs.

I can spot an unwell hen a mile away and at the minute I have roughly 11 hens needing hormone implants to stop tumours from growing and eyp from starting. These are super expensive but they save their lives. Running a place that concentrates on giving Isa Browns a happy ever after is so expensive when you actually tend to their health.

I’m running out of funds fast at the moment and need a hand to purchase implants so I’ll be putting up a fundraiser tonight and would love if you could help by donating or sharing. ❤️❤️❤️

Mrs Pelham, Vince Noir (aka "My Little Vincey") and Obsidian Blackbird McKnight are tough customers. All three of these chickens are quite dominant and wont put up with nonsense, especially Isa Brown nonsense. These three came in together from another sanctuary that I am not a fan of and it took them quite a while to settle in. They've only just integrated in to a larger flock and (at the moment) Vince Noir is sharing space with my gentleman of a rooster, Roger Ramjet, and it is going well thus far. Vince did kick me in the face, so things not going so well with his idea of me thus far. They are three huge characters who have so much to tell me when they realise I am one of the good ones and they can share their secrets with me.

*Names taken from The Mighty Booth, as a lot of the sanctuary residents past and present are.

Angry arrived in 2014 from a breeder who no longer wanted to breed Suffolk. He did the old "If you don't take him, I'll take him to the abattoir" trick, which is the number one manipulation with people who dump animals. When Angry arrived he really was so very angry. We couldn't get near him. These days he is a mellow old man who tries his heart out to pretend his young, but he struggles to get up the hill and keep up with others. I haven't the heart to put him in the small paddock behind the house yet with Righty and Limpy yet because he so dearly wants to try to be young. So until he really can't anymore, I'll just watch him, medicate him and play along with his youthful journeys up and down the hill.

Today’s LP News!

Photo One - Hills Hoist Snapper is one of my favourite hens in the world. Fierce, unapologetic and knows exactly who she is.

Photo Two - Roger Ramjet visited Tontine today. She wasn’t impressed and said she’ll leave romantic dates to the hens who can actually run away fast.

Photo Three - My stalker, The Gremlin, caught mid stalk.

Photo Four - Vince Noir kicked me in the face a few days again and if you thought I used to look like a zombie extra in “Sean Of The Dead”, well now I look like one of the main zombies with a close up and lines. He attacked me because I was medicating a hen near him like an amateur chicken lady. He was only doing his job. His job however has made me now look 7 days dead.

Our Story

Lefty’s Place is a small, registered not for profit animal refuge in the Macedon Ranges, Victoria, run by photographer, Tamara Kenneally. Named after her beloved sheep named Lefty who passed away in January 2013, it is home to rescued sheep, chickens, ducks, turkeys, peahens, dogs and cats from a variety of backgrounds. The main goal of Lefty’s Place is to document each animal’s life from their time in farms/abattoirs etc through to their new lives at Lefty’s Place. Tamara is committed to portraying these animals as the individuals they are and providing viewers with each animal’s true self and story so they can be aware that farm animals are so much more than just a food source.
