***** Biosecurity (Avian Influenza) Emergency Order 2024 under the Biosecurity Act 20154******

You may be aware of the current biosecurity issue involving Avian Influenza which has been detected in the Greater Sydney Basin/Freeman's Reach areas over the past few days.

There has been a declaration of biosecurity emergency placed on a Freeman's Reach property which encompasses quite a large area around the property and adjoining suburbs.
As this is a developing avian emergency, I am taking all measures into consideration to ensure the health and wellbeing of our visiting birds and our own flock.

If you live or work in the area within the boundary formed by Putty Road, Wilberforce Road, Hawkesbury Valley Way, Bells Line of Road, Kurmond Road and Macquarie Street, Foxwood Bird Boarding will NOT be able to assist with any boarding up until the declared Emergency Order ends on 19 December 2024.

To alleviate any concerns for our clients, there will be no visits to the bird room by any persons who live or work within those boundaries, under any circumstances.

I did warn some of my clients that I may post some non bird pics on here today.

Here is the other half of Foxwood Bird Boarding. He was chosen to be part of the King’s Guard during today’s Sovereign Parade for the King’s birthday. It is a huge honour and a great experience for him.
He was so excited to be chosen by the Governor of NSW for a chat.

A message for any of my clients who keep licenced birds.

There is currently a public exhibition of a Draft Code of Practice - dealing with protected birds. From what I have read, this will mean instead of having to renew licencing and keep stock records, any keepers of protected species will instead, abide by a Code of Practice.

Visit the webpage for further information and updates at

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is seeking feedback on the draft dealing in protected birds code of practice.

*** Availability and close down dates for 2024***

We are currently taking bookings up to and inclusive of 7th October 2024.

After this date we will be renovating, and bird boarding will be unavailable.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
We will advise our feathered families as to when we will reopen via Facebook and email, however it is unlikely that we will reopen until after the December/January school holiday period.

We thank all our feathered families for your ongoing support of Foxwood Bird Boarding.

Champ stayed at Foxwood for a few months. He has an amazing vocab and would say goodnight and good morning every day. He loved his scratches and hanging upside down on my arm. During his stay he learnt to yell at 'the kid'. 'Hey Zac'! was his new learnt phrase which tells me, as a mum of a teen, I said it too much :D. We loved having Champ here for his extended stay.

Neville is another of our regular African Grey visitors. He's a bit shy and doesn't like to tell me all his words, but loves to yell out to me, whistle and call for attention. He loves his scratches and 'nose bops' and is my very best friend when I have a seed treat for him. When there is another grey in the room he'll have a chat with them and listen carefully to what they are saying. He's great at mimicking other birds and enjoys watching the antics of the little crazies - like lorikeets and caiques.

The gorgeous Sonny stayed with us for a few months and he became the room mascot for a while, blowing kisses to everyone who walked in. He was always a happy chap and loved interacting with people. We loved hearing from Sonny's owners letting us know that he had settled in perfectly back at home after his stay. It lets us know that we are doing the right thing by your feathered friends, reducing stress and continuing their routines as close as we can.

Sherbert goes by a few names at Foxwood. He is a ninja and we like to call him Sherbz. He is a special needs budgie but his ninja moves are extremely impressive. Sherbz has stayed with us a few times and is an easy-going little guy.

Arlo visited in April. Arlo has visited with us a few times. He is a very sweet, young African Grey who is still learning. African Greys are extremely intelligent and can be stand offish with strangers. It's important to work with them and ensure that they feel comfortable and safe. Arlo knows who we are and is happy to spend time with us and play some games and interact.

Buddy and Neo are two best buddies that came to stay for a while at the end of March. Very sweet little tiels that enjoyed their time out exploring and singing.

When your bird comes to stay with us, we make sure they have 1:1 interaction and time outside of the enclosure, if that is your preference. We maintain high safety protocols to ensure all birds are safe. Birds are not out of their enclosures at the same time as other birds in the room. Different temperaments and bird sizes are not mixed together to ensure the safety of all birds in our care.

Over the past few weeks and months we have had a lot of feathered visitors. Link came to visit again in March/April and had another lovely stay. He enjoys his time out for chats and singing tunes to the other birds.

Meet the gorgeous Leeloo. She stayed at Foxwood Bird Boarding for a few weeks. She is a stunning scarlet macaw. She enjoyed her treats and her spot at the front of the room where she said ‘hello’ to my postie and yelled to let me know when ‘the kid’ got home from school.
A gorgeous girl who we loved having here with us at Foxwood.

My tutorial Tuesday... on a Wednesday... again...is this thought provoking post I have seen on Facebook a few times. Whether you are able to keep a bird for its entire life ensuring all its needs are met or you ensure provision for that bird when you can't provide those things. If we tame animals - they then rely on us and it's then our responsibility to ensure they are cared for.

Although it appears that Neville is extremely unimpressed with the treat he had just received, believe me, he absolutely loved it!
Neville came to stay in late January. He was fairly quiet and reserved to start with - while he sussed out who I was. He is an absolute sweetheart and we loved having Neville stay with us.

Two visitors in the one pic!

These two headed home yesterday to their respective homes.

Both were here for a few weeks and enjoyed their chats.

Pascal is a cute little fluffball of lorikeet. Lots of noises and antics which kept Neville the African Grey entertained. Neville tried to teach Pascal new tricks as you can see here, and some new sounds and words.

Neville has become a bit of a regular at FOXWOOD. He's a dignified and intelligent boy who takes everything in that happens in the room.

**** Tutorial Tuesday ****

Apples and oranges

We all know that giving our birds a variety of vegetables and some fruits is a huge benefit to our feathered friends. But did you know that some fruits given together are not so good?

Citrus fruits are a great source of Vitamin C and we all know how much our birds love apples.

If the two fruits are given together it will cause iron storage in birds such as lorikeets, lories, etc. This is not a good thing. The vitamin C in the citrus increases the absorption of iron in the apple.
