We want to help our clients to help their horses! Here at EVDS we treat every horse and owner as an individual — with respect, honesty and willingness to go the extra mile. Our ultimate goal is to reliably help our clients to prevent disease and understand the importance of quality dental care. Our vet Dr Oliver Liyou has special interests in equine dentistry, lameness, internal medicine and repro

duction and has invested in the best equipment and training available. With this, we strive to offer clients maximum value for money through efficiency and thoroughness. We are only too happy to perform procedures or attend to problems outside of the mouth whilst examining each dental patient. Thus we practice a holistic style of equine veterinary medicine. Focus on constant and never ending improvement means we regularly attend post graduate training courses. As well as improving our own skills and knowledge, we aim to pass on this new knowledge to our clients.

*** DOES YOUR HORSE INSURANCE COVER DENTAL CLAIMS? ***

After two of my clients have been caught out in the past month or so, I thought I’d post a little warning to horse owners to check what their insurance actually covers. Dental referral work can run into many thousands of pounds, so it’s best not to just presume your insurance covers it, as you could be left with a very large bill if it doesn’t. One of my clients was paying about £70 a month and only discovered she wasn’t covered for any dental work when it came to her horse needing a tooth out and sinus flap/flush. Another client didn’t know that she wasn’t covered for dental work until she needed it recently, and was paying £45/£50 a month.

Another scenario I’ve come across is a well known insurance company refusing to pay out as the horse was a month overdue his annual dental exam, and therefore this invalidated any claim for dental work. You will also need to be able to access a history of your horse’s dental work; this is kept as standard for at least 7 years by vet practices, but make sure you can access the same if you use an EDT for your dental work.

I have had several other clients also presume their policies cover dental work, only to find out too late that they don’t.

Feel free to share, as this may potentially save you thousands of pounds if your horse needs dental work. Check the small print of your insurance policies!

Following on from the 1st post to help us understand the situation with internal parasites in horses

Welcome back to FEC February and the second post in our mini information series! 🐴🪱💩

Today, we will be discussing “What is resistance and is my horse at risk?

Gone are the days where the recommendation was to deworm your horse every 6-8 weeks without a doubt, however over the last 50 years our indiscriminate use of dewormers has unfortunately led to the development of resistance. Similar to antibiotic resistance, anthelmintic resistance is the ability for parasites inside your horse to survive deworming treatments that were previously effective in killing them. This occurs due to selection pressure, where the resistant worms survive and continue to reproduce resulting in parasite populations largely consisting of resistant worms. The more we deworm, the faster this resistance develops.

The concerning part of this is that drug companies have not been able to develop any new products for deworming our horses and as such we must take steps to reduce the frequency of deworming and hopefully the development of widespread resistance.

When we look at your horse’s level of risk of developing clinical disease, we are assessing the horse based on their age, their environment and their shedding status. In general, horses between 5 and 15 years of age are at the lowest risk. Horses not co-grazing with youngsters and high shedders, that live in a closed herd environment are at lower risk than those exposed to higher stocking densities, poor pasture management and poor quarantine practices. However each horse and situation is different, and needs to be assessed on an individual basis.

Veterinarians become so important in times of natural disasters and exotic disease outbreaks. 🙏

As flooding continues across Far North Queensland and fires continue to impact south-eastern Australia, it’s important to remember that animals are often caught up in disasters along with people, so veterinarians have an important role in disaster response.

We have online resources for veterinarians on treating animals injured in natural disasters, and resources for practices to help clients remember the importance of preparing for an emergency.

GREEN GREEN GRASS 🌾🌾

Large amounts of rain 🌧️ can mean lush new growth of grass, which poses risk for laminitis. Watching your horses carefully and limiting access to pasture is the best preventative.
Sugar levels rise through the day as the plant becomes a “sugar factory” happily photosynthesizing when the sun shines.

It’s no fluke that 3 yo’s can struggle to be their best in performance or condition?

Being in the middle of shedding 24 baby (decidous) teeth in 24 months & erupting many adult teeth, it’s important their owners advocate for them! 🙏

Great advice from Dr Sundra as the temperatures climb across Australia this Summer.

One note though, in Hendra areas (not southern WA) don’t put your water troughs or feed containers under a tree that flying foxes may visit to eat the flowers/fruit.
