We want to help our clients to help their horses! Here at EVDS we treat every horse and owner as an individual — with respect, honesty and willingness to go the extra mile. Our ultimate goal is to reliably help our clients to prevent disease and understand the importance of quality dental care. Our vet Dr Oliver Liyou has special interests in equine dentistry, lameness, internal medicine and repro

duction and has invested in the best equipment and training available. With this, we strive to offer clients maximum value for money through efficiency and thoroughness. We are only too happy to perform procedures or attend to problems outside of the mouth whilst examining each dental patient. Thus we practice a holistic style of equine veterinary medicine. Focus on constant and never ending improvement means we regularly attend post graduate training courses. As well as improving our own skills and knowledge, we aim to pass on this new knowledge to our clients.

More wonderful work being done in the name of improving welfare in horses plus keeping equine veterinary practices viable and sustainable ! 🙏🐎🦷❤️

🚨🦷TOOTH BE TOLD🦷🚨

Is your horse showing any of these signs?
* Dropping feed
* Losing weight
* Quidding
* Bad breath
* Hypersalivation
* Abnormal chewing
* Head tossing
* Chewing the bit
* Bit resistance
* Blood in mouth after riding

Elite Equine Vets has a strong focus on quality preventative and therapeutic equine dentistry. All our vets have completed postgraduate training in equine dentistry to ensure the best care for your horse.

🌟Our Elite Equine difference is that all horses are sedated and examined in our portable crush, we believe this is imperative to allow identification and management of pathology. We collect any relevant history and perform an external examination of the head, jaw and incisors. A dental speculum is placed to safely hold the mouth open, and the mouth is rinsed thoroughly. A thorough intra-oral examination is performed using a dental light and mirror, which allows assessment of all soft tissue and dental structures. Recommendations for any further investigation(s) or imaging are then discussed prior to treatment. Routine treatment involves rasping of sharp enamel points (odontoplasty) to optimise balance and function of your horse's mouth, however additional treatment is often required if other abnormalities are identified. All findings, treatments and recommendations are recorded on a comprehensive dental chart and emailed to you directly. Additionally, all horses are weighed and all geldings receive a free sheath clean🌟

Early recognition of pathology allows management of lesions before they progress, which optimises function and longevity of the teeth, and often saves on cost overall!

Did you know that all horses should receive an annual dental exam? Young horses (ages 4-5) may need more frequent check-ups due to rapid dental changes, while senior horses (20+ years) often require bi-annual exams to prevent periodontal disease and tooth loss.

Keep your equine companion happy and healthy with regular dental care. Consult with your veterinarian to determine the best dental examination schedule for your horse.

When extracting teeth, it’s important to always have a plan B & C discussed with the owner of the horse, prior to starting the extraction.

What will you do if the tooth crumbles?

I’ve lost 7 vet friends to su***de and only by a series of miracles was i spared from the same devastating fate in 2005.

Sophie's Legacy is far and away the most powerful and engaging charity to get behind our cause, having lost their own beautiful veterinarian daughter to a tragic su***de.

I beg you all to sign and share and turn the tables on these horrible statistics that have plagued our profession for 2-3 decades! 😥

Let’s keep spreading the message far and wide to ensure the veterinary industry has a bright future. Our goal is 10,000 signatures ➡️ https://sophieslegacy.com/campaigns/lost

19/07/2024

A long long time ago, i was a lay tooth floater - filing horses teeth for pocket $ as i went through vet school - with very little idea of what i was doing (probably not much & certainly missing a lot of painful problems), but i was doing my best. 🤠
Then after graduating as a vet i joined an International equine dental association which was mainly lay tooth floaters plus a few veterinarians.
I sat for and passed their exams in 1996 and became a certified member.
Then in 1997, i was at their conference in Pennsylvania, USA, in a bar, listening to some of the biggest egos and BS dribble come out of the mouths of the esteemed leaders of this group. It was almost a contest of who could outdo each other with the biggest BS ego stories?!? 🔫
Having been a vet for 3.5 years at the time, i realised how different the levels of respect for science and truth there was between the veterinary profession and this association’s members. I knew i had to leave that association there & then.
That was the moment i found my purpose in life - to encourage & invite veterinarians to reclaim their role from before motor cars arrived, and be the primary carers of the mouths of horses . 🐴🦷❤️
Our world has prospered and advanced on the back of science, engineering and sharing of accurate information. Equine dentistry is no different.
So from 1997 onwards i have tried my best to explain the WIN-WIN-WIN relationship between horses-owners-veterinarians when vets look after the dental needs of the horse - rather than many of the unaccountable, poorly educated, unregulated, and fly by nighter style lay tooth floaters.
Since 2002 , with the aid of many, we have accommodated over 1050 veterinarians to our post grad courses in equine dentistry. 🙏
We’ve followed the research, science & text books from veterinarians dating back to the 1800’s on eq dentistry. Veterinarian Dr Erwin Becker was doing levels of dentistry in horses back in 1938 that we are still trying to get vets to emulate today. 👍
So to see a post like the one below is as good as it gets for evidence of proof that my life purpose is reaping results.
To see the next generation of vets not only willing to learn, but to see them excited and passionate about equine dentistry is something i’ve dreamt about for close to 3 decades now, and it is unfolding exactly as i hoped for! 🙏
Horses are not going away, and they need doctors right? 🤷‍♂️
So if vets doing dentistry can help make veterinary practices in every corner of this big country sustainable enough to keep their doors open, then i’ll keep running courses. 👍
On with the show! 💪🐴🦷❤️

Who wants to pay for
some really EXPENSIVE dental care
in your horse/s? ☝️

Here’s how: 👨‍🏫👍

1) pay for a cheap , non-transparent dental exam & treatment (ie you don’t get a chance to see/feel inside the mouth and individual teeth/gums/bars/tongue/palate/cheeks etc ). 🦷🧑‍🦯

2) your horse continues to feel pain & not utilise its food efficiently,
to not settle with bit contact,
to feel pain on its 60,000 chews per day and so graze only enough to survive, but not to thrive! 🐴💪

3) you spend lots of $ on feed, supplements etc over months and months trying to help your horse whilst assuming your horse’s mouth is great 😩❌

BELOW is a example whereby the 10 yo horse “had its dental at pony club late last year, yet continued to stick head in air with bit contact, get agitated going trot to canter etc. “

Fact is that not only was it :
A) a waste of $100 😩
B.) horse kept suffering 😥
C) lost time to enjoy horse 👎
D) wasted $ on other supplements trying to solve the behavioural issues. 🚮
E) horse loses confidence and trust in the bit , the riding experience and the rider! They start to resent YOU!!! 😈,
but also
F) The continued stress to the horse can contribute to other issues eg glandular stomach ulcers😥
G) If you want the painful problems fixed, you have to find someone and pay them too! 😩

The same scenario could be applied to hoof care etc.

It reminds me of the saying “the poor man always pays twice!” 😥

Choose wisely - cheaper is not always the best! 👍

Remember that YOU are your horse’s #1 welfare advocate - to allow him/her to be the best version of themselves in life!

If you can’t see and understand what’s being done in their mouth, how can you truly know???

Who would be interested in a day of free dental check ups , where you can see & feel in there, for horses that had “dentals done” in the past 6 months???

Who agrees?

What is the difference between a steak knife taped to the halter and very sharp teeth cutting the cheeks on each of a horse’s 50,00-70,000 chews it does each day???

Great to see one of our original Porta Safe Stocks built in 2002 still going strong in South Australia. 💪

These truly are the main point of difference for veterinarians wanting to perform high quality dentistry in the field on farm.

We’ve now built over 100 of these trailers since 2002 along with hosting over 1000 veterinarians at our post graduate training courses in the ever evolving field of equine dentistry! 🦷🐴❤️

One of the most frequent questions we get asked when enquiring about our dental procedures is, why do we use a crush and sedation?! The simplest answer is safety and quality!

Why are these options safer? Let’s break it down!

🐴 What is a crush? And why do we use one?
Simply put, a horse crush is a form of restraint, and is an invaluable tool for any equine veterinarian. It provides a safe form of restraint when handling the horse for anything from dental exams and procedures to other treatments. A crush is generally made up of a metal frame with a door on both ends, and has smaller quick release doors above, which makes it easier for the vets to access the horse.

🐴 Why do we opt for sedation?
Being secured in a crush and having a dental procedure performed can be scary for a horse, so we opt to use sedation as way to help relax and calm them. This allows us to perform an accurate and thorough exam of their mouth and teeth both safely and efficiently. We provide your horse with a comfortable level of sedation, so they aren’t reacting to our exam, but are still alert enough for us to be able to look.

🐴 Quality!
We aim to provide high quality dental care and as we know horses don't like to have their mouths examined or handled so a major reason behind using both a crush and sedation is to allow an accurate oral health exam and procedure.

If your horse requires a dental examination or procedure, please give our friendly team a call on 8318 1801.

🐎Do you give a SH!% about your horses’ parasite burden?🤷‍♂️
🐎 Did you know that 80 % of horses only need deworming once or twice per year, and you CANNOT pick the 20% that need deworming 3-4 times per year by things like:
- whether they’re in good condition or not?
- whether they pass dead worms after you give them a worm paste ?
🤓 A Faecal Egg Count (FEC) is the best way to check on your horse and the effectiveness of your wormer.
👍 Drop a fresh poo sample (1 faecal ball in a glove) to us at EVDS or a sample can be taken during a dental.
✅ We will do a Faecal Egg Count with our state of the art Parasight System!
✅ The Parasight machine is 10 times more accurate (down to 4 eggs per gram compared to 50 eggs per gram with the traditional McMaster floatation method).
✅ Your results will be emailed to you automatically once the test has run.
👍If you really want to know if you have dewormer resistance problems on your farm, you can test again 2 weeks after you’ve drenched the horses to see that you have effectively killed the adult worms.
🙏 It’s important to NOT test within 8-12 weeks of having been dewormed in the past (the duration depends on the type of dewormer given)
💲Faecal Egg Count Cost is $40
