✅ Are Complete Feeds ‘Complete’?

🐴 This is a topic I find myself repetitively stumbling across while I am assessing equine intakes. There are SO many premixed feeds available that state they are complete and balanced, but are they really?

🌱 To be blunt… no. It’s just not possible for a singular premixed feed to balance every diet across the board because there are so many variations which influence a horse’s nutrient requirements. This is a large reason as to why I often recommend powdered supplements or balancer pellets with calorie sources in the form of whole ingredients like beet pulp, lupins, copra meal, and the most forgotten one… hay added to suit the individual horse’s needs.

🐎 Where I do recommend premixed feeds, I also generally recommend top ups of specific nutrients like zinc and copper because rarely does a premixed feed provide optimal levels to balance out the horse’s iron intake which is almost always in excess of their RDI. Of course, on the odd occasion there is a premixed feed that suits a horse’s base diet of pasture/hay really nicely and further supplementation is unlikely to be necessary.

⚖️ All premixed/complete feeds will have a recommended daily feed rate dependant on the horse’s weight and workload. Where a majority of people get caught out is when they either:

1. Don’t weigh their horse’s feed and end up feeding less than the recommended daily amount which = nutrient deficiencies.
-or-
2. Decide their horse doesn’t need the calories provided by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 kilograms of premixed feed and resort to feeding less than the recommended daily serve which = nutrient deficiencies.

🏇🏻 Unfortunately, all too often do I assess a diet where a horse is being fed the recommended daily serve of a premixed feed relevant to their weight and workload and still there are deficiencies &/or imbalances to be found. Sometimes it isn’t just about ‘meeting’ a horse’s recommended daily intake for nutrients, but also ensuring that these nutrients are balanced in accordance with one another. A good example of this is calcium:phosphorus ratios. If you meet a horse’s RDI for calcium but proceed to significantly exceed their RDI for phosphorus, you are likely to still induce a calcium deficiency because the ratio of Ca:P is not optimal.

🌾 Working with whole ingredients allows us to be a lot more flexible with a horse’s digestible energy (calorie) and protein consumption without compromising on essential vitamin and mineral supplementation. There are a handful of premixed feeds that I know to have great levels of some of the most commonly deficient nutrients found in Australian horse’s intakes; however, it is important to remember that there is no such thing as ‘one diet fits all’ and even more important to ensure you are feeding each horse as an individual for optimal health and performance.
