Storms and Fireworks can be scary!!
Fear of strange and loud noises is a common problem with our pets. Right now you might be noticing behavioural changes with your pets with the current storms we are having. And with New Years and Australia day, fireworks are also a common cause of loud noises that can scare our pets.
Fireworks produce loud noises, but with storms there are loud noises, flashing lights, darkening skies and changes in barometric pressure and humidity.
Pets are quite sensitive to these changes, and can start to become reactive hours before storms arrive, due to the changes in the skies and barometric pressures.
Here are a few tips that you can do to ensure the safety of your pet during our summer, and help them through fireworks and storms.
1. Keep your pet secured inside your house. If you cannot leave your pet inside, ensure that your yard is appropriately fenced so they cannot escape.
2. If you are keeping them inside turn on the lights and close windows.
3. Give them a safe place to hide.
4. Try giving them distractions such as treats or their favourite toys.
5. Give them a meal and exercise them prior to the event.
6. Ensure that their microchip details are up to date, and they have identification on their collar.
7. Use ambient noise at home to mask/cover the noise eg music/tv/radio.
8. Speak to your local veterinarian about anxiety medications that can be used.
9. Be with them as much as possible.
Please never ever punish your dogs for fearful behaviour - speak to your local veterinarian about tactics that can be utilised to prevent this reactivity in future.
If your pet does go missing contact the local vets in the area, 24 hour emergency services, and local facebook lost and found groups. It might be a good idea to have a current photo of your pet in case you need to ned o advertise if your pet goes missing
A friendly reminder that if you are planning for your pet to be looked after while you are on holidays, that their vaccinations must be up to date if going into boarding. Check their vaccination status now! We are open Mon-Sat. Call us on 5443 2099 to check.
