📌 Handling Dog Reactivity: 3 Key Steps

Reactivity can be tough, but these steps can help manage it effectively:

1. Stay Calm and Create Space: Keep calm and move away from the trigger. This gives your dog room to feel safe.

2. Release Tension and Evaluate: Quickly release any tension on the lead and assess your dog’s stress level. Can they recover, or should you abort the walk? It’s okay to cut the walk short after a stressful event. Better to go home and play calm games than risk another trigger and escalation. If your dog recovers quickly, you can continue.

3. Allow Decompression Time: Depending on the situation’s severity, your dog may need a few minutes to a couple of days to fully decompress. Decompression activities can include quiet time at home, gentle walks in low-stress environments, sniffing games, or relaxing puzzle toys. This time is crucial for your dog’s mental and emotional recovery.

Remember, dog training progress looks different for every dog. It’s easy to get caught up in comparisons, but each dog is unique, and so is their journey. Be proud of what you and your dog are accomplishing together. Keep in mind that progress, no matter how small, is still progress! You never know the full picture behind another dog’s training, so focus on your own goals and celebrate the milestones you achieve. Little wins matters!!

What’s your best achievement so far, if not on the list leave a comment!! I love to hear success stories 😌😎😊

When they feel threatened or stressed and see no other way to protect themselves, dogs get in a fight or flight mode.
If a dog feels cornered or unable to escape a situation that makes them uncomfortable, aggression can be their last resort to communicate their need for space or safety. This behaviour is often a response to fear, frustration, or anxiety, and it’s their way of trying to regain control over a situation they find overwhelming.

Providing dogs with options and teaching them alternative behaviours can help reduce the likelihood of aggression.

Appreciation post for Tuco and his amazing owner .vl ♥️ who is always putting the work in and guess what ? We can see it !! Tuco is reactive to dogs, resource guard and is not comfortable in the sunlight or if too windy ! How ever, since we started our program I can see how both gained confidence! Even with a knee surgery in the middle… you guys are amazing! Sad to seeing you moving to QLD but I’m super proud of you and I have no doubts that you are going to do great over-there and keep going with training! Looking forward for some updates 😊

As much as we are trying to plan our training session at the end of the day everything can change on the moment.
It’s important to look at the dog in front of us - sometime as trainer we can feel the extra pressure from client “to get faster results, do this or that “ but the truth is, It depend of the dog on the day. So of course we are always trying to set up our session up for success but things don’t always go as planned. We need to adapt, reduce criterias, be creative and open minded - that’s also the joy of dog training 🥰✨
