WHO WE ARE
Welcome to "Hounds in Homes" a rehoming and rescue of ex-racing greyhounds and some sighthounds. As volunteers at a previous rescue and re-homing many wonderful ex-racing greyhounds, it's now time for us to expand and create a breed-sp

ecific platform for potential foster carers, adopters and enthusiasts to connect. We have a wealth of knowledge when it comes to this special breed. Based in Sydney, we have a wonderful team of advisors, owners and dog trainers from around the globe. All of our greyhounds are ex-racing dogs who have been slowly introduced to life in the home. They have been rehabilitated, nurtured and most of all loved! We rely solely on donations to support our carers and seek specialised veterinary care for more complex medical issues not covered by GRNSW. We also like to provide our foster carers with support by providing Behaviour training, when needed. All donations are truly appreciated, making our jobs so much easier to bring more greyhounds into homes. You can donate either via GoFundme OR via direct deposit. Hounds in Homes

UPDATE - Winter had an unexpected vet visit yesterday, and I’m happy to report she’s doing well overall! 🐾❄️ Her old injury had flared up and we didn’t know how or why. She is doing well, but she still needs plenty of rest to recover. Again a heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated to help cover the costs of her trip to the vets—your support has truly been a lifesaver.

For transparency, we’ve added the invoices from her visit so everyone can see the breakdown of the costs. We did have some small funds available from some fundraising and a few adoption fees.

Thank you to https://www.facebook.com/greytlife.collective, for your donation ❤️

Not knowing if surgery was required was a stressful wait.

We are so grateful for your kindness💖

Here’s a lovely update on Bob, the beautiful boy from the pound.

Some pics of Bob taken today. He's super friendly and very affectionate. When you're sitting down he will often come and put his head in your lap. His coat is looking much better now, wounds have healed and he seems more settled - he's no longer constantly looking for a way out when he's outside.
He loves to play and often runs around the house with a squeaky toy in his mouth. Meeko is very gracious about letting him play with her toys. There haven't been any resource guarding issues (of course I am still feeding them separately). He's a very endearing dog!

After a long day at the vet, battling traffic, and trying to find out what had happened to Winter’s wrist and why she was in so much pain.

You receive more concerning news about Byron needing biopsies, your mind starts racing.

You can’t stop thinking about Pepper and Marcus, hoping they find their forever homes soon, so we can bring in three of Ava’s pups, who are now 19 months old.

We are all supposed to be on breaks, keeping things small, juggling families and work. Our main priorities, finding Pepper and Marcus their forever homes.

And then, in pops this message: a dog with a beautiful Roman nose and a sweet little underbite. He’s been around small dogs, guinea fowl, horses, goats, and even sees cats often.

You can’t help but think of all the people who have adored their Roman-nosed beauties and we felt compelled to share, just incase somebody is missing having a beautiful boy by their side.

All greyhounds deserve loving homes, wish we could take them all in.

Foster to adopt would be best for this boy.

Thank you to everyone who donated. We were really worried it was going to be a re-surgery.

Here's an update. After we visited Glebe Veterinary Hospital for an X-ray, we couldn't see anything alarming about the bone structure, so we were referred to SASH in Alexandria. Her clinical notes and X-ray were sent over. The surgeon has looked at it but has recommended that we treat it with Metacam and pain meds, to see how it settles. Obviously, the old injury had flared up for what ever reason.

Our next steps are to be decided, at the next consult. For now, it's a lot of rest and pain relief and monitoring the swelling, etc.

This was taken after morphine, bless her.

10/02/2025

We put winter to bed after her wee last night, woke this morning and she is usually at the kitchen door waiting for her walk.

When I looked she was laying on her day bed.

She is lame and can’t walk on her foot. It’s the one that she tore apart when she first arrived.

Our main concern is the tendons. We are heading to the vets for an X-ray now, so we know what has happened. It is very swollen and she is very quiet.

This poor girl has been through too much. Let’s hope it’s just swelling and no surgeries required. Physio was something we were going to start too.

If you can contribute to her vet work, so we can get her the care she needs, we would really appreciate it. If we have to go to SASH, we will have to take her.

Questions We Get Asked About Winter ❄️

Does Winter need high fences?
We recommend 6ft colorbond fences to keep her safe and secure.

What environment would Winter thrive in?
Winter would be happiest in a quiet suburban area—whether that's rural, a town outside Sydney, or a peaceful suburb. City life isn’t really her style; she’s a bit more of a country girl at heart.

Does Winter need a garden?
Yes, Winter loves having access to a garden. She’s much happier when she can roam around outside.

Does Winter dig?
No, she’s not a digger. She is, however, absolutely obsessed with lizards, though she’s never caught one!

What type of owner would suit her?
Winter would thrive with a physically active person who enjoys outdoor activities. She’s all about long walks and exploring—water, creeks, bushland, or quiet streets are all her favorites!

How is Winter in the home? Does she have separation anxiety? Can I work?
Winter does not have separation anxiety. She’s calm and content when we’re away, spending her time sleeping, playing with toys, or just pottering around her room. We have a camera set up and can confirm she’s relaxed during the day. When we get home, she’s just excited to see us!

Is she toilet trained?
Yes, she’s a very well-behaved girl and fully toilet trained.

How does she get along with other big dogs/Greyhounds?
Winter lived happily with Dougie, a Greyhound, and we believe she misses him. They played together often and were great companions.

How much exercise does Winter need?
As Greyhound foster carers, we are used to shorter walks but we think we could give her longer, we’ve found that Winter is happy with two 30-minute walks a day. While she could handle longer walks, she does really well with this routine. Her afternoon and weekend walks are longer, and she enjoys some garden time too.

Is she reactive to other dogs?
Winter is a bit selective with other dogs. She’s fine with some and not so keen on others.

What is she like in the car?
Winter is great in the car now. She’s calm, waits patiently, and even listens when it's time to hop out.

What is Winter like with people?
Winter is amazing with people—she loves everyone she meets and has a super friendly, affectionate nature.

If you think you could offer Winter a loving home, we’re here to support you with her ongoing training and transition. Let’s give this sweet girl the forever home she deserves!

We are so proud of her!

Our sentiments too. We are also dealing with surrender requests from owners who can’t keep their hounds, due to many reasons and rescues are unable to take them back, some ending up in the pound, like Bob and Jack.

Hey do you know someone who would like to adopt 3,000 greyhounds?
No? Same here 🥲

3,000 greyhounds in Victoria alone need a home after exiting the racing industry every year.

This does not take into account any greyhounds who already exited the racing industry and need a new home too. Those greyhounds have been adopted previously but are now surrendered from families doing it tough.

This week alone, we took in 3 greyhounds from the racing industry and another 2 greyhounds who already found a home but said home could not keep them.

We needed a break in February to focus on fundraising but as empaths with a genuine drive to help, we cannot turn a blind eye to those in need.

We urge Greyhound Racing Victoria to introduce a breeding limit in 2025.
Breeding this many greyhounds has never been sustainable but with our ongoing cost of living crisis, it is absolutely impossible.

Just stop. Please.

Most of our greyhounds have loved the water!

Marcus does too, it’s just a shame he hasn’t been adopted yet so he can live near the water and thrive!

He loves it!

Education - Late night reading for our hound parent’s.

Diagnosing Autoimmune Diseases in Greyhounds:

Diagnosing autoimmune diseases in greyhounds can be particularly challenging due to their unique physiology and the variety of conditions that might present with similar symptoms. Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues, and in greyhounds, this can manifest in conditions like autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA), immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (IMT), or lupus.

A diagnosis often follows a process of exclusion. The veterinarian will typically rule out other conditions that could cause similar symptoms, such as infections or cancer, before considering an autoimmune issue. Blood work, including complete blood counts (CBC), biochemistry panels, and specific tests for antibodies, is crucial in identifying autoimmune reactions. Urine tests can also provide important insights into kidney involvement, as autoimmune diseases can affect various organs.

In addition to lab work, veterinarians might rely on imaging or biopsy of affected tissues to gather more information. Because autoimmune diseases often develop slowly and symptoms can be subtle or mimic other health problems, it can take time to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

Treatment Considerations for Greyhounds:

Greyhounds, being a breed with specific health considerations, may also react differently to treatments compared to other dogs. For example, they may be more sensitive to certain medications like steroids or immunosuppressive drugs, which are commonly used to manage autoimmune diseases. Close monitoring and a tailored treatment plan are essential for the well-being of a greyhound with an autoimmune disorder.

Regarding a good vet who specialises in autoimmune diseases, you'd typically want to find a veterinary internist or a specialist in internal medicine who has experience with autoimmune conditions. Some vets and clinics have specialists who focus specifically on autoimmune diseases or immunology.

Local veterinary colleges or teaching hospitals: They often have specialists in immunology or internal medicine.
Veterinary referral practices: They can refer you to a highly-rated specialist in autoimmune diseases or provide suggestions based on their network.
Online veterinary communities or breed-specific forums: Greyhound owners often share experiences with specific vets who have treated similar conditions.

Please feel free to share your experience and pass on any information regarding good veterinarian.

🩵Owner relocating abroad🩵

After 3 years in care, Byron is coming back to us.

I have had him for 3 years now. He is 7 years (born 1-Sep-2017) healthy, very calm and non-fussy. Will be a great apartment dog. Will be great with young children. Never reacts to other dogs, despite provocation even. Never had any toilet accidents, goes outside or on walks. No experience with cats. Responds well to affection but not needy. Loves his food and can be protective of it. Dental health is A+. Has had a minor corn in right foot. twice in 3 years lasting approx 1 month, prefers to walk lame and won’t accept shoes. Has a minor benign lipoma on hind leg.

It’s very sad that his owners are forced to return to their country of birth.

🩵ASSISTED REHOME🩵

This sweet boy has found himself caught in the rehoming crisis, no longer the responsibility of the industry since he’s now someone’s pet. Originally rehomed in Darwin and now in Sydney, he’s still searching for his forever home.

We are not in a position to take him in to care unfortunately, BUT In our experience, with his age a home without children would have been a better match for Moe.

What his owner says about him:

His name is Moe. He's 8 years old, he's a pretty chill dog most of the time. Loves morning walks, afternoon zoomies, and sleep. The reason for needing to rehome, is that he is not suited to younger children.

(Note: he has not been aggressive to any child, he is simply stressed with them)

It is with a heavy heart that we are looking to rehome Moe. We have an 18-month-old daughter, and after much consideration, we’ve realised that he’s not suited to a home with young children. We’re hoping to find someone who truly loves hounds and can give him the calm, safe environment he deserves.

His Microchip number is 956000004911829. Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide.

You can fill in our adoption form and we will endeavour to assist in getting him safe and in to a new environment asap.

Thinking of making some dog friendly washes in Bars. Just thinking of what to use?

📷 - These are the Human ones (First batch looking good)

🧼 - For the hounds, we are thinking:

- Manuka Honey
- Coconut cream
- Oat Milk
- Rosemary

What else could we add, safe for dogs?
