De-shed season is coming! As the weather is warming up, our furry friends are going to be dropping their winter coats, and a good de-shed can assist with this process. Regular de-shedding helps to maintain the health of a dog’s coat by removing dead and loose hair, which can cause matting, tangles, and skin irritation. Who remembers little Colt from my video about the importance of desensitising puppies to grooming? Well, 8 months later and Colt is not so little anymore! Because he was introduced to grooming so young, he knows exactly what to expect during the process and remains calm throughout. Like most dogs, he doesn’t necessarily enjoy every part of his groom, but he understands how to behave like a perfect gentleman from start to finish 💕 Colt is a great example of why desensitising puppies to grooming is so important; not only does it make the process much less scary for your dog, but it also makes for a safer working environment for your groomer (particularly while working with dogs Colt’s size!) 💕🐾

Colt’s first groom ☺️ getting groomed can be a pretty scary experience for most dogs, so if you’re thinking of getting a puppy, here are some important tips to help make the grooming process easier on them (and your groomer 😉) The most important thing to know is that puppies need to be desensitised early so that it’s not so scary when they’re adults. Here’s a couple of ways to desensitise your puppies before taking them to the groomer: 🐾Touching and holding their feet often - most dogs hate having their feet touched if they aren’t used to it, which makes clipping nails and any shaving and scissoring of the feet more difficult 🐾 Start bathing and blow drying at home as soon as you can, a normal hairdryer works fine 🙂 start by turning on the hairdryer and pointing it away from them, and rewarding them if they exhibit calm behaviour. Gradually bring the dryer closer, starting with their feet and working your way up 🐾 Leash desensitivity! Not only will this make walking your puppy on a leash much easier, but your dog will be tethered when groomed and this will be a lot easier if they are used to wearing a leash 🐾 For dogs that will eventually require regular haircuts, get your dog used to having their face and ears touched 🐾 Lastly, get your dog to a groomer as soon as they are fully vaccinated (usually around 12 weeks old), even if for just a bath and blowdry. As they get older and go more frequently, they will know what to expect and the whole thing will be much less stressful on everyone ☺️
