Breathe better, move better, ride better!

🌟 Top Tip Tuesday 🌟⁣

🌬 Practice your diaphragmatic breathing ⁣

⁣ 🤷‍♀️ Sounds simple, yes? But 90% of riders that I assess for the first time aren’t breathing properly.⁣

🌬 Ideally what should happen is that as we take a breath in, our diaphragm contracts to allow the lungs to fill with air and our belly pushes outward. As we breath out, our diaphragm relaxes and the air leaves our lungs and our stomach flattens. ⁣

❌ But stress, posture, pain, constantly pulling our stomachs in, etc, all get in the way and our breathing patterns can change. A lot of “core” exercise programmes teach an accessory breathing pattern and can block the action of the diaphragm. We become reliant on accessory breathing muscles in the chest, neck and shoulders and these end up as our primary breathing muscle patterns. This can lead to neck and shoulder tension, headaches, or thoracic pain and restriction, as these muscles are not designed to work constantly.⁣

🤷‍♀️ Why learn to breathe properly?⁣

🌬60-70% of our lung blood supply is in the lower half of the lungs so if we are not getting air in deep enough we have less oxygen travelling through our blood supply to our brain, organs and muscles, therefore we can fatigue more quickly. Not great if we’re trying to get fit!!⁣

🌬Diaphragmatic (belly) breathing can make a massive impact to our movement and fitness. Imagine how much easier a 5 minute dressage test or course of jumps would be if we were able to breathe more effectively.⁣

🌬Slow, controlled diaphragmatic breathing stimulates our vagus nerve and activates the parasympathetic nervous system reducing the fight or flight response, lowering cortisol levels and improving heart rate variability. A useful technique if you’re nervous before a dressage test or course of jumps!!⁣

🧘‍♀️ If you want to learn to breathe more effectively and use your diaphragm optimally, try my diaphragm reset video:

https://vimeo.com/655910897

🌬Then set reminders every hour and do 5-10 slow diaphragmatic breaths. ⁣

And see how it makes you feel ☺️⁣

💙 Breathe better, move better⁣, ride better⁣

Always love working with riders at Shibumi - regulars and new faces! There are still some available spots for my upcoming clinic on the 17th and 18th of July. Come and have an intensive rider focused lesson where you will learn not only how to use your body more efficiently and effectively in the saddle but also understand the reasons why. You’ll leave your session with a more thorough understanding of your own position and biomechanics and that of your horse as well. Contact Sheryl on 0410 536 755 or email [email protected] for bookings and feel free to reach out to me personally for any questions about my coaching 🦄

🤯 THIS IS GOING TO CHANGE YOUR RIDING LIFE! 🤯

👉 As riders we have all studied the Training Scale Pyramid for Horses. What about the Training Pyramid for Riders? Are we not 50% of this athlete team equation!? The Rider has been mostly the forgotten part of the athletic equation for a long time ... NOT ANY MORE!!!

🧠 My brain has been thinking and constructing this for the past 1.5 years & now, we finally have a Rider Training Pyramid!

💪🏼 I created this Training Pyramid to contribute to a community of educated, physically self-aware riders who not only want to be effective in the saddle -- they want to FEEL GOOD too! This in turn leads to better, happier horses.

📣 I'm going to break down each training tier in the coming days, so watch out right here for more. In the meantime, save and share share share!

This is an exercise my riders are all familiar with - one of my favourites!

SITTING TROT (Quick tip)

To practice your sitting trot: STAND UP! Yes that’s right! Standing up in the stirrups while trotting is one of the first steps to real balance.

It’s done in all the European military schools (e.g. Spanish School of Riding). Not jumping position leaning over, but STRAIGHT UP.

Are you wobbling around up there? When you learn to absorb through your joints - hip, knee and ankle joints, up there standing in trot, then your sitting trot stands a chance of being good too.

If you can’t stand with a tiny gap between your p***c bone and the saddle standing fully, your stirrups are too long to help your balance. And, your heels will be up. If the gap is Huge when you stand, your stirrups are too short.

Good luck with this exercise!

🐴 Riding Tip 🐴

True connection doesn't come from pulling back and forcing a false "frame". 🙅‍♀️

It comes from understanding how your hands, elbows, arms & deep core structures work together to invite the horse to seek out the contact. 🤲

Some of the best riders in the world have lovely, soft, following hands and arms -- and their horses look happy to come up to meet them as a result.

❓❓ Who's your "riding idol" when it comes to achieving true connection??

Incorporate this into your training to improve connection and straightness and help you feel the effects of having a horse truly on the outside rein, a critical component of any half halt.

Yesterday I spent the day at the beautiful Fairy Meadow Park - talking rider fitness with a great group of BRC members who did some Pilates followed by some ridden sessions to put that into practice in the saddle. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect and I thoroughly enjoyed chatting and working with everyone. Thanks to BRC and Nienke Lucas for organising and for the photos ✨🧘🏼‍♀️🦄

This is so true

Many of us ride with a sense of urgency. Our horses’ head comes up, we must immediately fix it. The horse breaks from canter to trot, immediately fix it. The horse falls in while doing lateral work, immediately fix it.

You may read that and think, “yea, what’s the problem?” Well I’m not saying you shouldn’t correct these things but I think there needs to be a little space between the issue and the correction.

It’s like the saying goes, “Between stimulus and response there is space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

If we take a moment to be open to what is happening, we may see a clearer picture, a broader picture. Sure, you can aid the horse back to the canter if the horse breaks to the trot and in turn you fixed the immediate problem. But if you took just a moment to process the horse breaking from canter, you may have realized that they broke because the balance became incorrect and the horse no longer could hold itself together. So by simply pushing the horse back to the canter you temporarily “fixed” the problem. But you haven’t addressed the root of the issue which is the balance in the canter, therefore this issue is bound to happen over and over unless you help the horse understand where to put their body in the canter.

Quick thinking is important in riding but stepping back for a moment gives you a broader picture that may lead you to a better understanding of what is actually happening in that moment.

Did you know that horses have an oscillating rhythm to their movement?

Horses push off their hind leg transferring power diagonally across to their front. This pushes the rib cage and head and neck outward on the contra lateral side. This natural movement is essential for the energy transfer from the hinds.

If we disrupt this oscillating movement the energy created form behind can not be transferred and the vertebral column gets blocked (Kreinbring).

Join myself and Jillian Kreinbring for an upcoming webinar where she explains the importance of understanding functional anatomy in getting the best from our horses in terms of performance and musculoskeletal health.

Applies so perfectly to rides bodies as well!

When you trying to boil things down to the simplest of concepts for a client .

This was the result 🤔

It’s a fact that increasing body awareness is also increasing neurological sensory awareness.

If you have no body awareness can you truly have body control ?
If you have restricted body mobility can you have good body awareness ?

The premise is simple …..

If you can’t sense it you can not move it, and if you can not move it you can’t sense it.

This is why touch therapy is so effective it’s not magic it’s just neurology 😉

Feeling very grateful to have had Jacqui here in person for some lessons this week after a long lockdown. As always, I came away from my lessons with some great lightbulb moments and the feeling of hard work paying off and a lot of gratitude for my coach. Bittersweet as she is soon off on her next adventure to work with some very lucky riders in Hong Kong!

A good coach is hard to find - a fine balance of knowledge, communication, skill, compassion, problem solving, a sense of humour and passion! Jacqui embodies all of the above and more. Since I started training with Jacqui 5 years ago I never looked back - it’s no exaggeration to say it has been life changing. I look forward to many more years of learning and good pain (even if it has to be via video for a while)

If you have a coach you are grateful for - remember to let them know!
