✨Monday Night Tip ✨
This is my boy sitting calmly on the busy Cronulla esplanade on Sunday morning, loads of people, dogs everywhere, kids, noise, the whole lot.
You might think, why can’t my dog do that? But here’s the thing: most young dogs really struggle with this, and that’s completely normal. Calm behaviour in high-distraction environments isn’t something they’re born with… it’s a skill we build over time with practice, patience and solid foundations.
Harvey is 11, and these behaviours were taught long before Sunday, short bursts, gradual exposure, positive training and setting him up for success.
Just like you wouldn’t expect a 2-year-old child to sit perfectly through a fancy restaurant dinner (but a 12-year-old probably could), young dogs simply don’t have the maturity or skill set early on.
So before you think your pup “should” be able to do what older dogs can, pause and ask yourself:
Are my expectations realistic for their age and stage of learning?
If your young dog finds places like this overwhelming, you’re not doing anything wrong, they just need support, training, and a gentle, step-by-step approach 🐾
