Poinsettia - a lovely festive flower that can you find everywhere during the Christmas season. While one of the least dangerous flowers you can expose your pets to, your cats may still get a nasty surprise if they find themselves munching away on the leaves.

Symptoms include hypersalivation, vomiting and gastrointestinal irritation.

Beware of decorations! They look pretty, but we aren't the only ones that like to handle them.

From Christmas ornaments to tinsel, all these things pose a significant risk to our pets. Your pet may eat them, breaking glass and plastic or ingesting long strings can cause gastrointestinal obstructions, perforations and even loss of life if left untreated.

Bones are a staple treat to give our dogs around Christmas to try involve them in the fun and help get rid of leftovers. But there is one major issue with this.

Bones, when given appropriately and raw are generally fine as long as your consider your pets personality and size in regards to the bone given. For example, you would never give a small bone to a big dog prone to eating things in one gulp. The bigger issue is when bones are brittle or cooked.

These bones are able to splinter and break apart, causing major concerns when ingested. Issues include damage or tearing of the osoephagus, stomach or interestines, causing blockage or internal bleeding that must be treated as soon as possible.

There are also no benefits to offering cooked bones as all the nutrients have been cooked out of them.

Lilies! Beautiful. Colourful and oh so very dangerous, even lethal, for our cats.

Every single part of the lily is toxic to cats and can be lethal to a cat that simply brushes against the flower.

The smallest touch can lead to symptoms that eventually lead to kidney failure and end of life. So many florists, gardens and even walking trails contain versions of lilies whose pollen can then be carried back into the home if you brush along them.

Do not hesitate to seek help, especially when you notice the following symptoms: lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea, drooling, disorientation, tremors/shakes or coma collapse.

While there is an array of other symptoms, when paired together, and with the suspicion of lily toxicity, we can take care of your pet in an efficient way. The sooner they get help, the more likely we can save their lives.

The closer we get to Christmas, the more decorations that we tend to put out. A lot of them involve the need for batteries.

As with children, batteries are very dangerous to our pets and can and will lead to immediate issues upon ingestion. These are not only limited to chemical burns, esophageal damage to internal bleeding.

Do not hesitate if you suspect your pet or your child has eaten a battery. Seek immediate medical attention and call ahead to get advice on how to deal with the situation to try minimise the damage.

What is pretty, sparkles and looks amazing on your shelves? Snow globes!

No matter what part of the world you're from, snow globes have at one point or another, likely become part of your decorations for the festive season. But they carry one very dangerous ingredient that can cause some major damage to your pets.

Most snow globes contain ethylene glycol or antifreeze. This helps the glitter or items inside float slowly before settling because of how thick it is. The issue however is when it leaks or breaks. The chemicals smell sweet and some curious pets decide it is sweet enough to eat.

Ingestion can cause gastrointestinal upset, CNS (central nervous system) depression, intoxication, and hyperosmolarity to, in the more severe cases of end of life. Symptoms can appear within 30 minutes of ingestion and should be treated within the first 24 hours for the best chances to save your pet.

It's hot outside and with the Australian summer already in full swing this year, there is a certain animal appearing more and more. That animal is a snake!

Australia is home to some of the most dangerous snakes in the world, a lot of which you can find in your very own backyard. If your pet is bitten or you suspect your pet has been bitten, it doesn't matter if you saw it happen or simply suspect, you must immediately seek help!

Limit your pets' movement, if this means carrying them, do so. Never tourniquet the wound, but apply pressure from the paw all the way up if the bite is on a limb and you can see it. Never flush it, attempt to treat it or suck the venom from the wound.

Symptoms include but are not limited to: weakness, collapse, vomiting, laboured breathing, loss of bowel control and uncontrolled bleeding (depending on the snake).

If you believe your pet has been bitten by a snake, it is imperative you head to your NEAREST vet hospital, making sure to call ahead to see if they have antivenom. Giving as many details as possible is vital to saving your pets' life.

Another great holiday treat is alcohol! Even if you don't drink it, a lot of holiday food is cooked using alcohol, from main courses to desserts!

Just like humans, your pets can easily become intoxicated which will lead to vomiting, ataxia (incoordination), difficulty breathing, coma and possible end of life.

If you suspect your pet has ingested alcohol, no matter the reasons as to how, contact or attend your nearest vet for assistance. We don't care for the why, we only care about the treatment.

Christmas is a time of decorations, gatherings and food! But there are certain foods and treats that our pets should not have under any circumstance!

Nuts are one such food that they should not ingest. Not only are the majority of nuts high in fat and able to cause pancreatitis and pose a choking and obstruction hazard, some are downright toxic to them!

One such nut is the Macadamia nut! The exact component that makes them toxic is unknown but we do know that they will lead to poisoning, causing intoxication in pets quickly.

Symptoms include: increase temperature, vomiting, tremors, neurological issues and worse.

Contact your nearest vet if you suspect your pet has eaten any form of nuts in your home or on the street!

✨ Meet Prince Bao, the Brave Burmese ✨

Last week our regal Burmese friend Prince Bao came in for a dental procedure, and he handled it like the royalty he is! 🐾👑 While his pearly whites needed some extra attention, including a few extractions, Prince Bao is already on his way to feeling much better.

Did you know? Dental health is just as important for pets as it is for humans. Untreated dental issues like tartar buildup, gum disease, or broken teeth can lead to pain, infection, and even affect your pet’s overall health.

Routine dental care, including regular checkups and cleanings, can make a huge difference in your pet’s quality of life. Don’t wait for signs of discomfort—prevention is key. 🦷🐾

Here is your advent calendar of Christmas advice for your pets!

Symptoms of ingestion include vomiting, diarrhoea, irregular heart rate, seizures and possible end of life.

If you suspect your pet has had any chocolate, please call or attend your nearest vet hospital for assistance!
