Aussie winter turning it up! ☀️😎

PLEASE PLEASE remember to take your horses waterproof rugs off so they don't cook all day!

Leaving early? Worried that your horse will get cold?
Horses don't get as cold as we do. And it's far better for them to be a on the cooler side for an hour or 2 (but I bet you they won't be) than hot all day under non breathable rugs!

I see way too many horses with waterproof rugs on on warm days and it makes me sick to the stomach to think how uncomfortable they must be 😫

Your horse will thank you 🙏

Some good info about worming!
22/03/2023

Some good info about worming!

Apparently it’s March... already!?
Our wonderful, tidy calendar says it’s autumn now too. And so here is my annual “It’s not actually autumn yet – don’t deworm your horses straight away!” spiel.

Autumn is the No. 1 time of year to worm your horses, because it ties in best with breaking the bot-fly life cycle. A bot fly’s lifecycle is 12 months, so treating just once a year will break that lifecycle (and overtime decrease bot fly populations). By mid-autumn/early winter, the entire population of bot flies will be inside your horse, which means you can target all the bots on your property with a single dosage of a boticide dewormer (ivermectin, abamectin, moxidectin).

If you deworm your horses too early in autumn, you will not be targeting all the bot flies as they are often present well into autumn, laying eggs on your horses coat. If you deworm on the 1st of March, there will be bot flies, and subsequently bot eggs and larvae that come after the treatment and will remain within your horse for the year.

Therefore, hold off on the autumn deworming a little longer, if your horses are in good condition. Wait until the nights cool down and the bot flies disappear before deworming – and make sure that the dewormer you purchase is active against bots, otherwise it will all be in vain. If your horses need to be treated now, do so, but make sure you target bot flies again in early winter.

So that’s my bot-fly spiel. Normally I write about strongyles (my favourite), and so I shall of course make a mention of them here too.

I always recommend a mid-late autumn deworming for ALL HORSES because it a) cleans out any bots and b) all horses really should have a strongyle clean out once a year as well. I may be against deworming for the sake of deworming, however that is only if you are doing it 3 or 4 or more times a year.

Strongyles can have a lifecycle of as little as 6 weeks. In addition, at any one point, about 90% of the strongyle population is living on the pasture, not in the horse. Therefore, the concept of using chemical dewormers inside the horse to break the lifecycle of strongyles would not work. At all. So, we chose our annual deworming-clean-out to line up with as many other parasites as possible.

All boticide dewormers are also effective against strongyles so deworming in autumn is a 2 for 1 type deal. You should also consider using a dewormer that also contains praziquantel to treat for tapeworms to get a complete clean out, just in case tapeworms are present. If your horses are only being treated once a year, it is good to do as complete a treatment as possible.

Lastly… wait, second lastly.. this is a topic to complex to get into here, but: this time of year is key for larval cyathostomins, where encysted larvae have mass emergences from the intestine wall, in response to changes in weather (eg in VIC as it cools and becomes wetter again). Deworming and removing adult populations of worms can act as a trigger for larval re-emergence, which is also why I often baulk at deworming horses now. The larvae may slowly re-emerge coming into the cooler weather and treating in mid-late autumn may be a safer bet to remove adults and emerged larvae. The research on this is sketchy as best, however these are patterns shown in cattle and hypothetically should translate over into horses.
And lastly (pat on the back for reading this far): just because I’m recommending deworming all horses does not mean I am not recommending FECs in autumn. A FEC will tell you important things about your horses health, and pick up anything odd that may be happening (eg tapeworm you didn’t know about). It will also allow you to test drug efficacy. Autumn should be a key time for everyone to do a FECRT (faecal egg count reduction test), where you get FECs done before and after deworming to make sure that it worked. If you only deworm once a year, then you’ve only got one chance for a FECRT, and you cannot, I repeat, you CANNOT do a FECRT without a FEC before to compare to.

If you’d like to organise FECs and FECRTs for your horses this autumn, check out the website (link on the FB page) for postal submission and drop off points/events.

Hay bellies - fat or fiction?

Long term followers may recognise "Pie the Drought Horse" from a few years ago in the photo, sporting a lovely big belly. But if you look closely, at the ribs, shoulders, topline and hindquarters, he does not seem to be carrying any excess fat in these areas. What's going on?

Many people will look at a horse of this shape and say he needs to lose weight, however if you can see (or easily feel) a horse's ribs it is very unlikely that he is overweight, even with a big belly like this.

There are a number of reasons a horse can present with a big "hay belly" (and no, it's not because he eats too much hay!).

- Diet high in low quality (difficult to digest) hay/straw and/or sudden change in forage
This causes bloating because the feed hangs around for a long time in the gut waiting to be digested. What does eventually get digested by the gut bacteria may also cause an increase in gas production by the bacteria
- Similarly, a horse with digestive problems (hindgut issues, unhealthy gut bacteria) may also have trouble efficiently digesting feed, with the same result, even with better feed.

- a diet very low in protein, or quality proteins (i.e. essential amino acids)
This adds to the problem by reducing the horse's ability to develop good topline and core strength, which allows it to "hold up" its belly and also evens out the shape visually
- Similarly, long term lack of exercise in some horses can also result in a "sagging" belly - this is often related to confirmation.

In Pie's case - all of the above! During drought conditions he had to eat what he could find, much of which was probably not very high quality, resulting in a massive loss of weight and muscle atrophy all round.

He had an amazing recovery, however his digestive system had to re-organise itself to deal with feed again, which may have led to a few changes in gut bacteria populations, and fluctuating gas production. Muscle development, particularly in the topline and core, will also help, but of course requires exercise and correct work, which Pie wasn't yet up to.

Checking your horse's diet is crucial to make sure they are getting the right amount of vitamin and minerals.

Most cases of greasy heel, rainscald etc should be cleared up by now with the reprieve we've had from rain (mostly...)

If your horse is still struggling with these skin conditions, it might be a good idea to double check his diet - trace minerals are commonly low and even more commonly imbalanced in the average horse's diet, particularly zinc, which is crucial in the immune system and healing.

Most commercial feeds and supplements don't contain anywhere near enough copper and zinc to maintain skin and hoof health in challenging conditions.

I will be in the Camden area next Wednesday 7/9.

Let me know if you'd like to book your horse in for a clip or tidy up.

Also starting the "Spring Comfort Clip" for cushing/old horses and ponies that struggle to shed.

$100+ travel (depending on area and numbers) for a body clip (no head or legs)

Don't let your oldie suffer in the spring heat. Get in early as they become almost impossible to clip if they start sweating because dirt+sweat+long hair= sticky mess!

I have been asked by several people if I would come to the Southern Highlands and ACT to do herbal medicine consultations.

So I’m thinking of having a Southern Highlands Day and then another day in ACT and surrounds.
There is also the opportunity for a day in Goulburn and surrounds.

I see horses over rugged way way waaaay to often and it makes me sick!

Overheating is one of the most uncomfortable thing and I find it baffling that people think it's ok to do this to horses.

Please read.

BRRR... with all this winter weather coming our way, our first thoughts are often to rugging our beloved ponies!

There is an old saying that a rug equals a feed - whilst there is some truth in this it is more beneficial for your horse to get that extra feed, rather than the extra rug.

More fibre not only keeps your horse warm, but keeps his digestive tract functioning as it should, which provides so many more benefits!

Rugging on the other hand, is much less often necessary than we might think, and may cause overheating. Horses are able to tolerate temperatures down to 5C without using any extra energy. Of course individuals will vary, according to the climate they are accustomed to, and wind and rain factors play a significant role in the temperatures horses are comfortable in.

Older horses and those who are underweight also need different consideration - while some use cold temperatures to try and get weight off the porkier of our equine friends!

Here's a paper I wrote on the subject for my Masters which also contains a small experiment we conducted. (NB: NOT a peer reviewed study, for educational purposes only!) https://www.integralequine.com.au/thermoregulation-in-horses.html
