Is Gamesmanship the antithesis of sportsmanship?

Sportsmanship is about improving your skill personally and collectively . Praising and acknowledging both those more able than yourselves and those more willing to give their all .

Gamesmanship is not that , it is about winning at all costs . It is about the outcome over the journey and often not about the greater good of the game

What does this have to do with dog training ?
Ask yourself this question …. Do you love all dogs or predominately your own dog or ones your know?
If the answer is the latter then there is a chance you predominately advocate for your Win . Your VIEW on what your dog needs to enjoy YOUR walk .

If you use the phase “ what do you expect it is an off leash dog area too “
That would be rule nick picking ( Gamesmanship over sportsmanship of having the skills to share the space )
Or
This phrase “ he is okay ,he is friendly“ that would be wasting time , defensive play for a poor recall.
or
having your dog off lead on a street pavement that would be a deliberate professional foul!

Be the best dog owner, advocate for training and role model with your dog, by not allowing them liberty, above their skill level.

Here is a video link to help you consider the feel good factor of sportsmanship in both male and female sport

An update on Miss Billie ! (Also note the wagging tail effect she’s given this photo 🥰🥰)

She is back with me now and as happy as can be, a true labrador personality ! Here’s the reason she came back to me: The guy who had her worked in scent detection for security, so think events, restricted access areas, high end hotels/restaurants etc. He worked on a by-job basis using his own privately owned and trained dogs. Billie last job with him as at Allianz stadium, and someone else working there offered him $5000 for her on the spot. However, a few weeks ago a new law came in - I don’t have all the details but essentially privately owned dogs can no longer do this work. So, Billie’s owner has had to change disciplines, which has caused Billie to end up back with me.

Why have I told you all of this ? Well, I have updated my description of the ideal home for her. I would love love love somebody who is keen on nosework or some other scent related sport to take her on. She absolutely loves her work and I suspect would be quite competitive in trials. She is easy peasy to have around the house and on the day to day, but very keen to use her nose, understandably.

If you like the sound of her, we can chat more ! 5️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ and a good vibe, she’s yours 🥰🥰
