“Just a showie”
What does it actually mean?
It’s a term that gets thrown around a lot and I should know, I’ve been hit with the term more times than I can count. Normally by people who do not understand the complexities of showing Cattle or why we do it or think it’s completely self promotion.
I got into cattle over a decade ago now when I was just 13, through my Aunt who yes did/does show Cattle.
Fast forward 11 years and I certainly have been to my fair share of shows. Mainly Royals, Canberra, Sydney & Melbourne and all the way up to Rockhampton.
Showing has taught me a-lot, not just within the cattle industry but day to day life. The responsibility of raising stud cattle, preparing, showing and repeating the cycle is no mean feat.
I use skills that I have developed from showing Cattle every single day of my life and I have no doubt that it has attributed in myself being successful in my personal career.
I do often think to myself that if there was more people exhibiting Livestock the world would certainly be a better place.
Do I dare say that exhibiting cattle is one of the biggest promotions for the breed. It’s not just about self promotion but also about promoting your breed as a whole.
Where else can you get tens of thousands of people to look at your breed and have some of the best on display.
From exhibiting Cattle, I personally have been able to:
* Educate members of the public about our breed
* Provide an Avenue for those interested to see our breed
* Put people in touch with breeders close to them
* Achieved Interbreed success & wins, showing breed relevance
* Sell Cattle to Lifestyle, Stud & Commercial breeders
* Increased membership
* Increased publicity for the breed
* Incorporated our breed and show success into our cafe to sell Australian Lowline Beef for a premium
* Improved the quality within my herd and added quality genetics to the gene pool
* Established an international market for our breed
* Awarded the 2022 Prestigious Emerging Leaders Award
* Achieved the highest selling Australian Lowline Heifer at Public Auction
If being “Just a showie” means that I can acheive all those things then I’m damn proud of it and I want to thank all those “Showies” before me and those to come in the future.
Before you throw around the phrase “Just a Showie” slow down and think about what it actually means because it is a whole lot more than just exhibiting cattle at shows.
