Well >$15,000 and 4 years later, I finally have a female who'll be the start of my program. Safe to say that 4 years ago I had no idea what becoming a responsible breeder would entail.

Goodbye for now guys...

The below memory popped up, and I thought I'd share it as I write this farewell post. I'll be taking a hiatus from the AB world for a while, and wanted to leave with a big thank you to a few people -

Shari from Theora American Bulldogs. This woman has stood by me through many many ups and down and shared so much knowledge. I thought I "knew a lot about dogs" before, but I knew nothing. I've bought three dogs from Shari over the last few years, and she has stood by those dogs every step of the way, no matter what the financial or emotional cost to her. If you join the 'Theora family' by buying a pup (if she even LETS you buy one) you are in the the safest, kindest, and most knowledgeable hands. And her advice comes with zero attitude - even when she's probably more than tired of your relentless dog spam and crazy questions.

Alana from Southside American Bulldogs. Twice you've talked me through hard times, and been so open and honest. I'll never forget - that just like Shari - you've stood by your dogs and your word when all my life's experience has told me you wouldn't.

Scott from Hunter Dog Training - what you've taught me will stay with me forever, and will benefit any dog (big or small) that now crosses my path.

Knowledge is power, so I thank the people above for willingly and humbly sharing theirs, to better another prospective breeder and the dog world at large.

HACKS for your outdoor AB!!

I love buying nice dog beds, coats, & collars like the next person, but got sick of watching my AB eat them on the first night. Waste of money, clean-up required, and then fear of compaction in the gut.

ANSWERS?

Straw bedding in kennels

Don't leave collars on when there are multiple young dogs together (one chews it off the other)

Use metal food dishes that are pretty indestructible

Red hot spray! You can buy this stuff or maybe even make your own? It's non toxic / non harmful, but tastes horrendous. Spray it on anything you don't want them to touch. Seems to work

I don't have an answer for the coat problem, other than to not use coats - which definitely sucks in winter. Sure I provide a cosy kennel at night, and they naturally grow their own winter coat, but if anyone has some clever ideas to make real coats work....awesome...
