Another outing for Lizzie & Lawson yesterday at our local comp - with yet more time off due to weather & life, Lawson was a good boy with minimal rides under his belt. Some solid work with a few hiccups, but a good day out .

Para Equestrian Petition

UPDATE: The Para Olympians are again off to the World Equestrian Games. Decision reversed - great news. Thanks to all those who signed the petition. Although it means there will be less federal government funding available come Paris 2024, we think people people will be okay with that.

Congratulations to the three riders selected to head to Herning in August:
- Dianne Barnes and Cil Dara Cosmic
- Emma Booth and Furst Deluxe
- Lisa Martin and Juicy Wiggle

. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

News spread quickly this week that Equestrian Australia High Performance has withdrawn support for our para equestrians for the World Equestrian Games. Para equestrians who had already qualified for WEG. And people are angry.

Part of the rationale was that EA High Performance was only keen on sending combinations who had a good chance of winning a medal.

Australia has a good record of good performances in para equestrian events - think Joann Formosa, Emma Booth and Sharon Jarvis.

Joann, pictured, won gold at the 2012 London Paralympics, in the Mixed Dressage - Championship grade Ib event. She qualified on Worldwide PB, a "former Wanganui-owned Hanoverian stallion" that she acquired in December 2011.
In November 2013, Formosa was awarded the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) Against All Odds award. She was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in the 2014 Australia Day Honours "for service to sport as a Gold Medallist at the London 2012 Paralympic Games."

You can sign a petition to be sent to EA High Performance asking them to reverse their decision, below:

The Horse Den Logo & Name Story 😍

Inspired constantly by the Qld sunsets our logo colours come from just that a beautiful Qld Sunset & as the proverb goes “Red Sky at Night, Sailors Delight”.

The Bit is designed as the “H” in our name The Horse Den & the idea of jumping the H is because we constantly believe in Reaching for your greatest heights, so therefore Jumping the Qld Sunset.

The name “The Horse Den” came about by us wanting a saddlery that was warm, welcoming & gave our customers a feeling that it was home. The word “Den” means a comfortable secluded room & although generally used as the word to describe a lair for wild predatory animals we can guarantee you we are far from that.

We are excited to bring you some of the best brands from not only Australia, but from around The World. Most of these brands not previously easily accessible in a store front.

Watch this space. We are set to Open our doors in Toowoomba in our magnificent & well known building 1st August 2022.

With the current wild weather, rugs are starting to appear in the fields. If you're tempted to rug your horse consider the following - if my horse is obese, unclipped and lives out, he/she does not require a rug. Use winter to your advantage to allow your horse to safely gradually lose some weight and dramatically reduce laminitis risk for the spring time. Laminitis kills and horses have a much lower thermoneutral zone (temperature range where they do not have to expand energy to keep warm) than humans. Horses 5-25 degrees with humans 20-35 degrees. This means that if you are cold, your horse may not be. Horses that are overheated by excessive rugging can suffer heatstroke, colic and stress - this is particularly difficult to avoid at the time of year when temperatures vary. Consider body condition scoring your horse to keep tabs on their condition over winter. Every horse may vary, but consider the guide below.

Making decisions about rugging is much easier when you realise just how different horses are from humans. The temperature range where we feel comfortable (our thermoneutral zone) is much higher and narrower than horses.

In general, horses are comfortable between 5-25℃, whilst humans are comfortable between 25-30℃. That means that we feel cold before horses do, but horses feel hot before we do.
