CONFIDENCE & WORK ETHIC

Is it possible to reach true potential without a work ethic?
‌
I thought a lot about this while working horses yesterday. I can not recall a horse that made a big time winner that did not have incredible work ethic. They also had intensity and confidence.
‌
I believe the same is true as humans. Talent will only get you so far. To truly be really successful you must have an incredible work ethic.
‌
I also believe that confidence comes from work ethic. When you put in the effort you know you have earned the rewards. I know when I have worked hard enough to be deserving of the benefits my confidence increases.

Due to a horse injury, I have got one spot about to become available for an outside horse needing training from beginning of January. You Vs. You

Competition. Envy. Drive to be at the top. We all feel it. We watch as those around us achieve the things we want so badly. We also put pressure on ourselves to compete with others and be on the same playing field as them. We feed off of the pressure, trash talk, rumors, and emotions that others reflect towards us. It’s not about the competitive edge that we chase after. It’s not about the scenarios of competition we make up in our minds to compete against someone else. Or to achieve something first. It’s You Vs. You. It’s the competition that you are in with yourself that matters the most. Don’t stress about what others are doing and achieving. Compete with yourself. Be so competitive with yourself that you become blind to those around you trying to be in competition with you. Every day you should be trying to be better than you were yesterday. Not better than someone else. You have got to let go of all these negative feelings and envy you feel towards others. Turn that energy inwards. Take this energy and focus on beating the version of yourself you were last time in the arena. Reflect on your mistakes and make changes. If you can outperform the version of yourself that competed last time then every run is a victory. No body can make you get better, faster, smarter, or stronger except for you. Work on the competition with yourself for six months. You will notice the difference it makes in your perspective and your skills. It’s You Vs. You. And make that competition the strongest one out of them all and the only competition that truly counts. You Vs. You.

Tip for today: BE. PROUD. OF YOURSELF.

Do not let someone that is not out there doing this bring you down. There are a million people that will judge you. A million more that will tell you you can’t do it. Those people don’t matter. Celebrate small wins and be proud of yourself. It’s ok to share how far you’ve come. This is hard! It is not easy to take 1000lbs animal and turn it into your flawless dance partner.

If it was your goal to go to a jackpot and you went. Be proud. If it’s your goal to get a 5D check, and you did, be proud! It doesn’t matter how small or insignificant the goal, if you’re out there crushing them, be proud of yourself.

Keep people on your team who truly want you to do better.

Rising 7yo (DOB 18/11/16) 15hh Q/H grey gelding. This eye catching guy is the real deal with a solid education and so much potential. With his bloodlines and work ethic he would suit anything from rodeo/time events to campdrafting, team penning or Ranch events etc. Has had 30 days on the barrel pattern and has also been used to turn back cattle at drafts.

Absolutely no vices and is easy to shoe/float.

Has been easily ridden by competent 16yo girl. Has also been ridden by a beginner under supervision BUT because Blue is soft and very light to leg aids, he would be best suited to a knowledgeable rider. He can be timid on the ground so needs a quiet and calm handler who he can trust.

This guy has a gorgeous temperament and just wants to please his rider.

Being a champion isn't buying the most expensive horse, having the most expensive barn, trailer, or tack. Being a champion isn't winning a class or a buckle. Being a champion isn't always glory and great times.

Being a champion is love, passion, hard work, dedication... It's tears and screaming, it's not always easy. It's working no matter what conditions you have to do it in. It's late nights and early mornings, it's horses before yourself, before your friends, often before your family. Its sore bodies, bruises, and cuts. It's vet bills and last dimes to make sure they have all they need. It's crying in their mane when you had a bad day. It's smiling when they finally get that thing you've been trying to teach them for a month. It's having the best network of people to care for them and to support you. It's farriers, vets, dentists, chiropractors, feed store owners, husband's, wives, family, friends and even enemies. It's learning how to take the good with the bad and never knowing what each day may bring. It's the happy and the sad. It's the highs and the lows. Its wanting to give up but never doing so. Most of all, it's the love that you feel every time you see those eyes and hear that nicker. Being a champion really has little to do with victories in the show pen as it does with victories on every road to get to that show. Being a champion is living for what you love and loving what you do and who you do it with and NEVER giving up. The victories are many and the ribbons and the buckles are icing on the cake so to say. But being a champion is so much more than just winning... And once you can learn that, you too will be a champion.

Remember when you send your horse to a trainer to be started for a month, they need to continue working as much as possible, you have to get that bond with the horse and take the time to do so. It takes YEARS to get a good solid horse. A month (heck even two or three) of training doesn't get you a dead broke horse but it gets you one that's ready to move forward.
Just like humans, we all learn at different paces. When rushed, we shut down, get irritated, and sometimes just give up. Horses are the same way. I am the trainer that will push your horses to become better equine however I will not RUSH your horses. Rushing will lead to issues down the road. And keep in mind HORSES will be horses! They will have bad days too!

It's normal for horses to test their owners. It's like kids... They seem to always behave better for their "teacher" than at home right? Just soak it in, be patient, and that horse you're looking for will be there. You just have to give them time, just like I do. :)

Having the right people around you is everything!! From your instructor to your friends, to your farrier and your vet. They all need to be in your corner and believe in you and your goals! 🩷 I am a huge believer in having a positive mind set! 🩷

I have seen so many people burnt by so called “trainers” and unfortunately it’s usually the horse that suffers. For your horse’s sake - do your research! 🩵

Do your research before you send a horse out for training.

You are just as much responsible as the trainer if your horse comes back in poor condition.

Find out what the feed program is. Go visit your horse or require regular photos and or videos—especially in this age with technology there are zero excuses for not receiving photos/videos.

Don’t choose your trainer from the win column. Just because someone is a great competitor does not always mean they are good trainers or horsemen. Go see their facility. Make sure it meets your standards.

Use trainers that have a similar style to you if you plan to ride behind them.

Communicate with the trainer.

Bottom line:
Do your homework and know where you are sending the horse.

Some horses are naturally talented athletes and they tend to make training a little easier and quicker.

Some horses need to be developed.

Some need to be taught how to carry themselves and how to use themselves in order to be efficient.

Some can be trained in a few months and some take years.

Some of the horses just need age and maturity to be physically or mentally ready to compete.

In other words, horses are just like people—

Some have anxiety.
Some are never consistent.
Some are always goofing off.
Some horses are all business and have a lot of try and some just can’t handle pressure.

But in the end—
Great horses make great trainers giving great trainers the ability to make good horses into great ones.
