Vonpeta Kennels was founded in 1973 by Peter Damarell. For 46 years his Longwood, SA property was the home of the most successful German Shepherd Kennel in South Australia. In April 2019, the kennel was relocated to Two Wells. It was operated by Jane Pike and Peter until December 2019 who ar

e members of Dogs SA and the German Shepherd Dog Club of South Australia. From January 2020 breeding operations reverted to Peter due to restrictions that have been placed on the breed by the GSDCA to gain Breed Survey status. My philosophy has always been to place most emphasis on those titles awarded by the Australian National Kennel Control (ANKC) as opposed to the awarding of an “Excellent Medallion”. Throughout the world it is generally recognised that the measuring stick for any breeding program is the SHOW RING. Gaining an excellent medallion is so easy that the kennel has bred 42 Excellent Graded animals and it has never been my main focus. The awarding of an excellent medallion, although highly regarded by the idealists of the GSDCA, is, in my opinion a bit like playing the “clown mouths” at the side shows - EVERY PLAYER WINS A PRIZE. I only list the excellent graded animals on my web page as I know there are still some idealists who value this award. If we do not assess our great breed against the canine fraternity at large, how do we know how the breed is tracking in the Canine World. It only takes one judge to award an excellent and many dogs never beat another animal. I have been present when 60 animals have been awarded excellent medallions whilst competing against each other. A bit like the “Under 9’s” football trophy night EVERY PLAYER GETS ONE. There are strict ANKC rules surrounding the awarding of conformation titles and it is impossible to win these titles under one judge. For the Supreme Champion title, the animal must beat all the working breeds on a minimum of 10 occasions. There is one important part of my kennel philosophy which I will never transgress. The GSD must firstly take its place in the general canine world and secondly be recognized as a GSD - NOT VICE VERSA as some of our GSD administrators would have us believe. The kennel has built a reputation for breeding quality pets and show animals throughout Australia. Vonpeta Eros was the first Vonpeta dog to gain the grading of Excellent in the 70's. Vonpeta to date has bred 1 Excellent Select graded animal (Vonpeta Eva), 42 Excellent graded animals, 3 New Zealand Excellent graded, 2 Supreme Champions, 2 Grand Champion, 44 Australian Champions, 3 New Zealand Champions and 6 class winners at National Specialist Shows; Grand Champion Vonpeta Taykall by Storm A Z Class I Winner Open Bitch Class and Gold Medal Winner 2008 National (pictured below), Ch. Vonpeta Eva A Z Class I Puppy Bitch 1996, Vonpeta Reggie Baby Puppy Bitch 2001, Vonpeta Nuffin Less Baby Puppy Dog 2010 and Vonpeta Quackawoody LSC Baby Puppy Dog 2019. In 2012 I was pleased to announce my first Dual Champion, Australian and New Zealand Champion Vonpeta Nuffin Less A Z Class I Multi Excellent graded in Australia and New Zealand. The kennel is renowned for being competitive in both the Specialist and All Breed Show Rings. The most famous litter bred by the kennel is without doubt the Vonpeta P Litter. From this litter there were 5 Australian Champions, 4 Excellent Graded animals and a National Class winner - Vonpeta Playful Prince, Pollyanna, Pinnacle, Panache and Phydeaux. The most famous individual animal bred by Vonpeta is Grand Ch Vonpeta Taykall By Storm A Z Class I Multi Excellent with numerous Best in Show awards in both the specialty and all breeds rings and the Gold Medal at the 2008 National. Not far behind her is her grand mother Ch Vonpeta Eva A Z Class I and her nephew Supreme Champion Vonpeta Ugottabekidding AZ Class I. The results of my kennel are unparalleled if due consideration is given to the important awards, namely those recognised by the ANKC. As previously stated, I have bred 2 Supreme Champions, 2 Grand Champions, 44 Australian Champions and 3 New Zealand Champions. I have bred 42 animals which have successfully been presented for Breed Survey, 67 animals have passed the GSDCA Hip Dysplasia Control Scheme and 68 animals have passed the GSDCA Elbow Dysplasia Control Scheme.

ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS OF GSD CLUBS AFFILIATED WITH THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG COUNCIL OF AUSTRALIA

Club members will soon be asked to vote on an amendment to the regulations relating to the conduct of The National German Shepherd Championship Show.

Briefly, it will be a requirement for entry in Intermediate and Open classes for the A and Z stamp or equivalent, and a Breed Survey pass for the Open Class.

If approved this will change the Show from a National Championship Show open to all, to a Restricted Breed Show.

Everybody is entitled to an opinion on this matter, so it seems, but whatever the result, the Show must be conducted under the auspices of Dogs Australia and all entrants MUST be a member of a state body affiliated with Dogs Australia. That is a given.

In view of the last paragraph, how can Dogs Australia and the GSDCA approve these significant changes, which are extremely restrictive, given that it is highly likely that many members of the respective state GSD clubs voting are NOT members of their state body affiliated with Dogs Australia.

These non Canine Control members are not even eligible to enter the National but have the same voting rights on this GSDCA AGM agenda item as members who are eligible to enter.

Whatever the result, “the losing side” will have strong grounds for appeal to Dogs Australia (via their state body) and I urge them to do so.

If the motion is carried or lost, non DA members have voted on a motion for a show that they are ineligible to enter.

The matter has been progressed with little respect and it is about time that someone stood up for correctness of process.

Please share.

Whilst I do not place high emphasis on the Award of Merit provided by the German Shepherd Dog Council of Australia, plaques for number 49, 50 and 51 bred by Vonpeta were presented and picked up by Jane this morning at the GSD of SA break-up.

Well done Mel, Kim and Sue as owners of the animals responsible for the awards.

Whilst there has been quite volatile debate on whether failed A and Z stamp dogs should be shown, I am wondering if the “ok to show supporters” are in favour or against the results being submitted to the GSDCA database.

Some breeders who continue to show these failed animals elect not to submit the animal’s result.

“So what” I hear you say!

Well, I emphasise that this is not aimed at discrediting any stud dog, but I think my maths will show that statistical information is only helpful when every kennel participates. If all failed animals had been included, the results published in the latest Quarterly National Review would be very different.
As an example, the HD percentage pass for one sire would be down a further 3% and even if I use a modest score fail of 20, the average HD score would be up by about 0.4 at which score it would be third highest on the list.

It’s quite easy to maintain a 100% average within your kennel if you only submit the “pass x-rays” to the GSDCA scheme but beside fooling yourself, what does it achieve? There is no disgrace in breeding a failed animal!

The main thing that true breeders should be trying to achieve is animals that are sound in body and mind.

Surely, one of the main pillars in this endeavour is the HD/ED schemes, which are already being somewhat skewed by animals that fail prior to 12 months of age. However, it is my opinion that if you are a true contributor to the breed, there must be some moral obligation to submit all x-rays to the GSDCA scheme and if under 12 months at least advise the GSDCA Vet.

How can real improvement in the “dysplasia space” be achieved if breeders and/or stud dog owners encourage the practice of only submitting the x-rays which you think will pass? That practice is not going to help breeders select future stud dogs and has to be detrimental to the breed.

In my opinion you are either a true custodian of the breed or an imposter.

CLOSING DATE FOR NEXT GSD of SA MEMBERS COMPETITION 22/9/24

My understanding is this show is eligible to all animals so it should be very attractive for members who have difficulty achieving A and Z stamps.

Good value for money too! No runoffs and no challenge points on offer. If you have a young male, you can almost be guaranteed that you will be only exhibit in the class and your day will be over quickly. No point in competing against the same age bitch or the best same age of the other variety.

Just like under nines footy, no keeping score and no competing. That might help improve the breed.

Put it in your diary now. Too good to miss!

In the very near future the GSDCA plans that there will be two types of Specialist Shows in Australia.

One type will prohibit entry from animals that do not have the A & Z stamp in the Intermediate and Open class (the National Show), the other types will allow entries without such restriction in those classes.

Confusing?

The change proposed is to satisfy the German judges where their rules do not permit the judging of animals with failed hips or elbows.

The obvious question is why should a specialist show be judged any differently when the judges are German, Australian or any other Nationality?

It is my understanding that the GSDCA will get approval from Dogs Australia (DA) for this to occur.

Given that some enthusiasts will be in favour, and some will be against, surely the only way to decide whether this should proceed would be by a National vote of all German Shepherd owners, that are members of their state controlling body, regardless of whether they are a member of a GSD Club or not.

If it is approved on the vote of the GSD member clubs, can someone explain why a vote by a Victorian member is worth more than a vote of a member in any other State?

Why are non GSDCA members not entitled to their say as it is a National Championship show under the auspices of DA?

Whatever your views on this mammoth change I urge everyone to email their State Canine authority and seek a National vote on the matter which should be for ALL specialist shows and not just for a show judged by a German.

Currently the Dogs Australia breed standard states under Disqualifying Faults “Dogs with proven severe Hip Displasia”. There is no mention of Elbow Displaysia. A change to the breed standard is required to include elbows, and is well overdue.

Food for thought…….

As the stupidity of the GSDCA finally tipped me over the edge, I now find it difficult to get absorbed in conformation showing. However, I still love my dogs to death, and I am grateful that Jane and Andrew were prepared to exhibit a small team of 6 dogs from VONPETA kennels at this year’s Adelaide Royal.

A picture paints a thousand words, so its fair to say that VONPETA had a fair day. Thank you Andrew and Jane.

The stars of the day were undoubtedly Grand Champion Vonpeta Ess Eff Aay AZ (Stewart) who was Best of Breed and his little mate Australian Champion Vonpeta Just If a Vacation AZ (Holiday) was Reserve Challenge bitch despite having the advantage of an A stamp over the eventual Bitch Challenge Winner.

My thanks to Jane, Andrew, Mikala, Danielle, Brodi, Miriam, Tatelyn, Jo, Kim, Juliette, Angie, Monika, and Robert who all were fantastic as handlers, holders, and general support throughout the day. Special thank you to Angie and Monika for the loan of the trolleys!

The Adelaide Royal holds a special part in the VONPETA history and seven of the last eight years, VONPETA has won Best of Breed and was RUBOB, the odd year out.

Although you will not see her feature in show results, I need to pay the greatest compliment to Vonpeta Ourbillidakid AZ who was lovingly cared for throughout out her breeding career by Barry and Margaret Bradbrook.

Billi produced Supreme Champion - Faze, Australian and Champion - Anni, who in turn produced Supreme Champion - Harmony and Grand Champion - Stewart. Anni, Harmony and Stewart all Best of Breed winners at Adelaide Royals. RIP Billi, you are still a legend in this house.

Including three long stock coat litters, VONPETA have been awarded 30 breed challenges, 16 Best of Breed and 10 times Runner Up Best of Breed.

The GOAT Storm won the Working Group on two occasions and other males and females have filled the minor Group placings on 6 occasions. Proudly, all winners had their A/Z stamps. No wonder the Adelaide Royal holds such a special place in memories of my dog showing.

Thanks to ADVANCE for keeping the kids in top condition.

Further to yesterday’s post regarding the proposed changes to AZ stamp requirement for National GSD Show entries, I reiterate that I am unreservedly in favour of the changes, but I also have the greatest respect for the democratic process.

Regardless of your persuasion in this matter, there is a real possibility that the recommendation emanating from the club meetings may not reflect the majority vote of the members. This situation can arise from the quaint system where certain State clubs have greater voting power than others regardless of how many people attend the meeting and vote. What ever the motion presented to ANKC, it may be a minority vote on “one vote one value” basis.

I urge everyone to contact your State Canine Control body as it is not procedurally correct to try and go direct to ANKC. Please do not use this as an opportunity to express your particular views on this issue. Merely insist that any changes MUST be made only after all GSD owners are canvassed. Non GSDCA members are surely entitled to vote on this matter. This was the process when the LRL regarding hips and elbow breeding was passed.

Please do not be complacent. Repost this should you wish but do not “sit on your hands” and do nothing. Regardless of your persuasion your vote as a GSD owner is as valuable as mine.

As a former member of the GSDC of SA, I am not surprised by the angst that has been caused by the steps taken by the GSDCA to reject entries at next year’s National if animals from Intermediate and Open have not passed A and Z stamp.

Let me say up front that I am in favour of this change but all those breeder/exhibitors who have difficulty meeting this requirement need not panic as, sadly, IT WILL NOT HAPPEN.

My understanding is that the GSDCA have merely posed the question whether the ANKC would consider this change. I am not sure whether that has been replied to, but if it is in the affirmative, the clubs will have to vote on it and the GSDCA can put the formal request to the ANKC.

Why do I say it will not happen? When “push comes to shove” there will be insufficient support from the member clubs and the discussion will go “around in circles” (how unusual) and will get side-tracked to issues like “make it a breed show” etc. etc. There are just not enough genuine custodians of the breed which includes the surveying and judging fraternities, within the clubs, just egos running wild.

My personal thoughts are that it is “a bit rich” asking the ANKC to approve such a change when not one club “has the balls” to incorporate these changes into member competitions that are not under ANKC rules throughout the year. That could be done by a stroke of the pen at committee level.

How much stronger would the case be if the GSDCA went to the ANKC saying “this is what we do at members competitions, we are seeking your approval to extend it to our National.”

It’s another typical GSDCA “Please do as I say not as I do”.

Ever since the farce at the German Shepherd Dog National where the winner and third place animals in the Intermediate Class had failed their A stamp for hips, it is becoming more and more evident that the Breed Survey system is destined to long term failure.

There is no reason why these animals might not continue their feats in future Championship shows and Members’ competitions, particularly in the open classes, where they could beat animals that have breed survey status. Why would anyone continue to undertake what is now a quaint little process from a well past era?

In the 1980s the BS system served a worthwhile purpose, and those appointed surveyors were usually from well-established successful ACTIVE breeding kennels. The surveyors of the day had worthwhile practical modern day breeding experience to pass on to newer exhibitors.

Fast forward 40 years and it is a very different situation. In SA only two current surveyors are particularly active in the breeding arena and there are two that have not bred for years. When the most successful and active surveyor is unavailable, the panel is very light on for current practical knowledge having all but lost one surveyor with 30 or so years’ experience.

Unless one of the larger kennels has someone “put their hand up” to become a surveyor, I see future surveys becoming even less meaningful. Going to survey could be like undertaking a driving test from someone who has not driven for years and may not have been much good at it. The alternative would be to be examined by someone who has only recently come off their P Plates. Why would you do it?

The breed affair standards of a club that once could genuinely lay claim to being a breed custodian are in serious decline.

Just my thoughts…. Peter

05/08/2024

I was a breeder/exhibitor of the German Shepherd Dog for over 50 years, I can honestly say that in the early days of breed surveyor/specialist judges, this group were seen and respected as custodians of the breed sharing their knowledge and experience to help breeders like me progress the breed.

Unfortunately, over the years, it is fair to say that the quality of practical breeding experience of surveyors/specialist judges has deteriorated markedly, and I query how many of them have lost their “thirst for knowledge” and are just going through the motions.

If you are a German Shepherd specialist judge and/or a recognised Breed Surveyor and you are not pushing to have the A and Z stamp to be compulsory for Intermediate and Open classes, then can I respectfully state that you are imposters.

At the risk of losing friends, if you hold these positions or even worse are members of the GSDCA Executive, and are just “sitting on the fence” why do you continue to hold these positions? You are not helping the breed, but I guess many of you are now just inactive breeders who have egos to feed and too frightened to “stand up and be counted.”

I am gobsmacked that any veterinary practice in the Two Wells/Lewiston area would have the audacity to invite its existing customers to pay a premium of $600 per year to be accommodated with a 24/7 emergency service.

Firstly, it has been easily forgotten that many of you were the very reason this practice thrived in the early years.

Secondly, there are two other options within 25 minutes’ drive both of which I have used. These two options do not involve the payment of a subscription and you are always made feel welcome at both surgeries and in my experience, receive prompt, well informed service.

If you feel the need to waste $600 annually that’s your business but, in my opinion, it would be better spent by donating to an animal welfare charity of your choice.

Just my opinion.
