The Therapeutic Goods Administration is considering downgrading M**A and Psilocybin (The active compound found in magic mushrooms) from schedule 9 of the Poisons Standard to schedule 8, making them more accessible for use in psychedelic assisted psychotherapy for some treatment-resistant patients. The TGA's final decision will be released within the next few days. We are crossing our fingers!

Australia's drug regulator, the Therapeutic Goods Administration, is set to soon announce if psilocybin and M**A - better known as magic mushrooms and ecstasy - should be removed from the prohibited drugs list. If they do, the drugs could be used to treat a range of mental illness.

Our "Mini Mushrooms" are the result of an aim to reduce single-use plastic in the mushroom cultivation industry. We grow our mushrooms from reusable bottles and jars to replace the more common method of single-use plastic grow bags for mushroom fruiting. These mushrooms are small, yet so is their environmental impact! With refinement of the bottle technique we hope to produce delicious mushrooms that are good for you, and for our planet. 🌏💚

Coral Tooth Mushrooms are looking super tasty today! 😍😋
These are the first to fruit from our Aussie mason jars. It's been fantastic to see clearly what's going on "underground" as these mushrooms grow, with no need for single use plastic!
Australia has such a diverse range of fungi. Cultivating native species like this one, Hericium coralloides, contributes to the robustness of our agricultural system by minimising reliance and risk from importing foreign species from other countries.
Happy mushroom growing! 🍄💚

Let's celebrate PORES! Not all mushrooms produce their spores in gills, many instead form pores. Pores are essentially clusters of tubes which are visible as tiny holes on the underside of some mushrooms.
Some choice edible mushrooms such as porcini (Boletus edulis) and other mushrooms in the family Boletaceae and Polyporaceae have pores. These families are in the phylum Basidiomycota.
Along the surface of these tubes, spores are created which will travel by wind, insect or the curious mushroom forager in wait of a suitable environment to germinate. Some mushrooms can produce over a billion spores per day! Only a few of these will grow successfully into bodies of mycelium capable of producing mushrooms.
What a crazy life! 🍄💚🍃

Enoki jars are looking good! The mycelium has been slow growing, taking almost a month to grow through the full 2l jar of enriched woodchips.
Jar and bottle culture is a fantastic alternative to single use plastic grow bags in the case of many mushroom species. Enoki mushrooms have been cultivated in Asian cultures for hundreds of years and are prized for their nutritional value and rich umami flavours. Research has shown that these mushrooms have anti-inflammatory properties and are beneficial for boosting the immune system. Can't wait to watch them grow! 💚

Hericium Coralloides mycelium creating awesome aerial structures on the agar plate!
Mycelium is a network of hyphae (fungal threads) and can be considered as the vegetative part of the fungus, usually found growing in it's food source underground or in decaying wood and other materials. Mycelium will form tight knots under the right environmental conditions which eventually grow into mushrooms! Growing mycelium on agar is the first stage of mushroom cultivation 🍄💚🌱

29/08/2021

"Bambra" the Australian Aboriginal word for mushroom. Unfortunately there is a large gap in knowledge regarding Australia's first nation's use of mushrooms as food or medicine. According to a talk given by Dr Gary Presland at a Fungimap conference, this is likely due to the huge disruption to Aboriginal society caused by European settlers. Many observations lacked details and were taken of a much-changed situation where Aboriginal people were fighting to maintain their traditional ways. The majority of attention of those observations were given to male activities like hunting and fishing rather than the crucially important but less obvious tasks of the female foragers.
Some of the most documented species of fungi eaten by Aboriginal people include a truffle species known as Native Bread (Laccocephalum mylittae), a jelly fungus (Tremella mesenterica) and the Beech Orange (Cyttaria gunnii).
To learn more on this subject please check out this article by Fungimap: "The place of fungi in Aboriginal economic practices".
