Ahhhh, Small Sugar, you can hide, but you can’t hide!

We’re growing six varieties of pumpkins in the Pumpkin Patch this year, including this ridiculously photogenic and mega-pumpkiniful Small Sugar, an heirloom that can trace its lineage back to, oh, the late 1880s!

These babies have gone through quite the transformation - from dark green beauties to this brilliant and what can only be regarded as prescient shade of . 🎃😌

So, which will come first - the pumpkin harvest or the election? (And if the pumpkin harvest comes first, can we stuff Scomo into a pumpkin, roast it and eat it?)

Slow-cruising bikes make for the perfect vantage points from which to spy good foraging locations.

And this apple tree is one of our faves around the place - guaranteed to yield bucketloads of good-sized, delish fruit that somehow manages to escape the ravages of codling moth and cockies!

We’re using a few of these babies in tomato relish and then the rest in apple cider.

An almighty haul of capsicums today, just in time for us to hardly have enough room on the bikes to carry them...

We weren’t holding out much hope for our capsicum plants this year - the rain and cooler weather really seemed to slow them down and we’ve seen a bit of blossom end rot in the fruit that did ripen...

And then suddenly they’ve decided to come to the party! And what a party, comrades!!! 🥳🤩😍

It takes a bee a lifetime to produce 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey.

It’s impossible to do justice to this factoid and what this means for the energy embodied in a jar of honey. Particularly recognising the readiness with which we humans pillage these golden stores and proceed to snaffle - in our tea and on our toast and as part of the highly questionable 1980s practice of mixing honey through cornflakes for a quick fix to a kids birthday party menu - the glorious work of these amazing creatures.

So there was mindfulness and celebration, both, in our honey harvest for the year.

We were joined by lovely neighbour, Candice (in what felt like a party of three in honour of the cast of thousands that created such abundance) to press the comb and extract the honey - enough to hopefully last us the rest of the year...once we’ve shared a bit around to our fave humans!

Parsnips are one of those things that sneak up on you.

You’ll be rolling around in gargantuan amounts of cucumbers, zucchinis and tomatoes, feeling like you never planted anything else, and then suddenly there’s this vast hedge of green stuff casting a shadow over everything and, underground, the straightest, most beautiful parsnips just crying out to be roasted with tomatoes and garlic and drizzled with caper vinaigrette...

Yeh, that’s what they’re saying. 💬💬💬

Plants care nothing for human schedules, and will do what damn well suits them best.

Our pumpkins had no desire to germinate back in October when we were ready for them to start growing.

Nor were they interested in putting on any growth in December, as we fretted that our transplants wouldn’t take.

We scolded them weekly, that this was not proper behaviour for a pumpkin, but they didn’t listen.

They clearly decided that late January was when they would cram all their growth, waiting until their human caretakers had given up all hope of a mature harvest before setting any fruit.

I can almost hear them sniggering to each other, laughing at our disdain whilst pushing out tendrils and fruit behind our backs.

Well, pumpkins, we’ll just see who’s laughing in May when the frosts arrive, and a pumpkin bonanza is revealed!!

Eggplants have snuck their way onto this week’s harvest list.

Buoyed by our bumper Tsakoniki crop of 2021, these striped beauties are making a comeback this year and we’re also trying our hand at Black Beauties. The name says it all, doesn’t it?

Early in spring, as we threw off our jumpers and turned our backs on our little greenhouse dome, curious forces went to work within...

We now have the healthiest, most vibrant looking self-sown Warrigal greens plant growing in the sometimes-50-odd-degree heat in there, working its way up the walls and steadily out the door.

We’re not complaining - it’s a sight to behold and we’re currently harvesting from it for our weekly veg boxes!!!

We’ll never look a gift dome in the mouth! 🐴 🌱

It’s pesto-making day!

And if pesto ain’t proof that the simplest things always taste the best, we don’t know what is!

Our recipe: 160g basil, four garlic cloves, 200g nuts (we used walnuts, because we had them in the pantry, but use pine nuts or almonds if you’ve got ‘em), juice of one lemon (thanks, Julie K!), good olive oil, big pinches of Murray River pink salt - blitz it in a food processor and it’s done!

Now we’re dreaming of homemade pasta with big dollops of pesto stirred through, pesto spread thick on fresh sourdough as part of a super flavoursome sanga, easy peasy pesto-y eggs on toast...

Will these jars last us the week?!?! 😋

Ahhhh, summer. Even with all the hair-frizzing humidity, sweaty shirts and hat-bands, flies up the nose and hot bike seats, you treat us so well!

This week’s harvest saw us add tomatoes - cherries ‘n’ slicers - and corn to our line-up, and carrots are finally doing their thing for reals.

It’s a super dooper time to be eating seasonally and locally. (And the beaut thing about sourcing your fresh goodies close to the source is not just that you are bolstering short, local supply chains but that the flavour is BUILT-IN - you hardly need to do a thing to make a gorgeous meal!)

Tomatoes are here, at last.

For our first two summers of growing, we held tight to the aim of having ‘tomatoes by Christmas!’ Oh gawd, did we toss ‘n’ turn over trying to get nature to meet that arbitrary and culturally constructed deadline!

Last year, in particular, we got early toms, but our plants weren’t happy and it felt like while we gained (psychologically) by getting tomatoes in tummies in December, we ended up with a smaller yield overall. We didn’t have a good time of it, and we learnt from that.

So, this summer we’ve cooled our jets a bit and tried to listen to what the season and the plants are telling us. We put our plants in the ground a bit later and we’ve gone to great pains to show them a lot of love!

It’s meant a little bit of a later start, but I think it’s fair to say we’re all a lot more content! And hopefully it gets us off to a good start for a lovely long season of healthy plants and lots of delicious toms!

Happy Underground

Happy Underground is a human-scale, participatory market garden, growing utterly awesome, hand-tended produce for hyper-local eaters.

Chris McGorlick and Lauren Salathiel - former owners of Yackandandah’s Saint Monday eatery - have turned their attentions from serving food to growing it, and are bringing the community along for the ride. (No saddle sores involved, we promise!)

Against the backdrop of Mount Big Ben, on a piece of land borrowed from friends, and with a miscellany of well-loved, people-powered, hand-me-down tools at their disposal, the pair aims to further cultivate the fertile cultural foodscape that is Yackandandah.

Keep your eyes on this space, good people!
