La Niña is doing her thing here in a pretty epic way - we’ve notched up 100mm of rain at the patch during the past two days, with more again forecast for today.
We thought we were being pretty clever, sowing rows of carrot, rocket and radish seeds on Wednesday to make the most of the coming rain, but are now wondering whether the deluge will have washed everything down the slope where it will, instead, germinate in a weird muddled patch of ‘salad mix’ somewhere in a valley closer to Myrtleford!
It’s all in crazy contrast to the mini-heatwave we sweated through earlier this week. This is climate change, baybee, and it makes for some interesting time-space planning, desperate scrambling to sow, harvest, water-proof and protect delicate plants. And it culminated in a harvest day today for which the word ‘soggy’ was a pretty hilarious understatement.
See exhibit A at the end of this clip, where you might just be able to make out a glimpse of Lauren tipping about a cup’s worth of rain out of one of her boots...

Happy harvest day, comrades!
This week we marked our first bike-iversary! That’s one-year of totally car-free, totally BIKE-FULL life and work!
In that time, we’ve racked up about 6000km, made friends with swooping magpies, roadside echidnas and smiling-and-waving country drivers, and figured out how to pack veg into a cargo bike in two minutes flat!
Here’s to the next year of merry pedalling!

What you WILL see in this video: that magical moment that thousands of our bees swarmed into the sky while we were harvesting coriander right underneath them.
What you WON’T see (or hear) in this video: Lauren letting loose on a string of very unInstagrammable expletives as the wonder of the moment turns to the stunned realisation that half our bees are about to fly away...

Happy harvest day, comrades!
We’re not ashamed to admit that we may have picked more carrots than we needed today, so that we could eat them as a mid-harvest morning tea...

Last week we made a zine to put with the vegies in all of our orders. Because it's amazing how much time you end up with, once all those evening meetings, band practices and friendly catch-ups are stripped away from your calendar!
In it was a recipe, a few little thought nuggets on foraging for hawthorn berries, musings on a book that Lauren put on hold at the library (which is now trapped inside...), a selection of amazing haiku created by the Underground vegie munchers, and a comic strip by CMac, formerly known as "Chris".
As a new week of meeting-less chilly nights stretches out ahead of us, you can be sure another one is in the making!
That music degree just paid for itself! RAD growers, Beechworth Natural Farm, Herry's Harvest, Murmungee Basin Produce, Greenwood & Grogan Produce, perhaps we should start a band? We’ve come up with a few name options - Pitchfork? Chris and the Cover Crops? Bad Seasonz? Patch and The Glut?

The bees are onto the good stuff! When we got to the garden this morning, we found them buzzing frantically around a Californian Tree Poppy - also called a Fried Egg plant (when you see the flowers from the top down, it's obvious why!). Amazingly busy workers, aren't they?!
