At 19, Robert Irwin, son of the late Steve Irwin, became the first person to hatch and breed the rare freshwater turtle species, Elseya irwini, which his father discovered in 1990. Steve Irwin, known as the Crocodile Hunter, found the species during a trip, and Robert’s achievement marked a major milestone in the conservation of the turtle. In October 2023, Robert shared a video on social media showing the first Elseya irwini hatching at a zoo, and he became the first to successfully breed this species in a zoo since his father’s discovery. The turtle was named after Steve. Robert described the moment as "one of the highlights of my entire life" and a special achievement for Australia Zoo. Along with his sister Bindi, Robert continues his father’s legacy as a passionate conservationist and educator, dedicated to protecting wildlife and sharing their love for nature.
