What is lurking under those gums? 🦷🫣
Napolean is a 4 y.o Dachsund that came to see Dr. Tony after the referring vet had noted an abnormal lucency associated with his rostral maxilla.

Dr. Tony raised a mucogingival flap, extracted 101,201 and 202, curretted the epithelial lining which was identified as an odontogenic cyst by histopathology. This cystic lesion was noted to be extending all the way into the palatine fissure!
Radiographically pulp necrosis can be identified by the widened pulp canal width of 201, suggestive of a radicular cyst. 5 month post operatively Napolean was clinically doing well and radiographs revealed no further recurrence of the cystic lesion, what a successful outcome!

The team at Mobile Pet Dentistry were honoured to be able to help two big cats, last week, at Mogo Wildlife Park in Southern NSW. Check out the x-ray of one of the root canal procedures below! 👇

First up is Mattai, a 12 year old 120 Kg, male Sumatran tiger. The team at Mogo Wildlife park noticed that Mattai was having trouble eating his food on the right side of his mouth. They informed the chief veterinarian, at the Park, who then contacted me to see what we could do for Mattai. We decided that Mattai required three root canal treatments. Sumatran tigers are critically endangered species and it was important that our team and the Mogo Wildlife Park staff helped Mattai return back to good health. The three root canal treatments were performed and Mattai was back into his enclosure in just over 2 hours.

Second up, was a 210 Kg big boy, called Baako. He is a 8 year old male lion, with a thick and luxurious mane. Baako is the favourite of the Park’s staff because he acts like a big p***y cat.
Although, Baako was not showing any obvious oral pain, his handler noticed that he had broken a right upper canine tooth. Once Baako was under anaesthetic, we found his left upper canine tooth also required root canal treatment. So, we performed two root canal treatments on his very long canine teeth.

Because both boys can be fragile under anaesthetic (a common problem with big cats), the Mobile Pet Dentistry team went into overdrive to get all procedures down as quickly as possible. Big cats’ teeth can be 4-5 times longer than a human canine tooth, so we had to use special files, made by iM3, to help clean out the inside of the roots. We then filled the teeth with tooth coloured fillings.
I have to say that it was a superb team effort.

I would like to thank the Mogo Wildlife Park crew, they were amazing and so caring for their animals. There was so much love for both of these special boys.
I would also like to thank our team. It was a tremendous team effort, with everyone going beyond the call of duty.
I would like to thank Drs. Wayne Fitzgerald, Alison Caiafa, Kayoko Kuroda, Astrid Klatte and with special thanks to iM3, the Veterinary Dental Company and their representative, Ms Susie Almeida, who provided a lot of the equipment that we used on the big cats.

I am happy to say both Mattai and Baako recovered well and ate a good meal that night.
We will follow up to see how they are going in the next few weeks.

🦷What a sore mouth!🦷

This 5y.o Groodle recently visited Dr. Tony for assessment of their traumatic occlusion. Read more below.

This traumatic occlusion resulted from the 304 continuously impacting into the hard palate, and as a result from the trauma, an oronasal fistula was diagnosed.

Read more below to see how it was treated.
Radiographs revealed pulp necrosis and apical lysis of 203 secondary to the traumatic occlusion as well. (See if you can appreciate the radiographic changes)

This patient underwent extraction of 203 due to non vital tooth, as well as 304 for treatment of the traumatic occlusion.
Treatment of the oronasal fistula was performed using a rotational flap from the labial mucousa. See the final result in the images!

Time to update your antimicrobial use protocols!

"Although the situation in Australia is currently much better than in North America, multi-resistant E. coli and some methicillin-resistant Staphs have appeared in Australian small animal practices over the last 10 years."

Mobile Pet Dentistry's Dr. Anthony Caiafa has been one of the authors involved with the recently released second edition of the AIDAP Antibiotic prescribing guidelines for cats and dogs. These guidelines give the practitioner pertinent practical tips that can aid in improvement of antimicrobial stewardship.

Rest in Peace, Philip Bloom, the founder of iM3. He was truly an innovative and inspirational man who contributed so much to veterinary dentistry. He will be missed by many.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Philip Bloom, the founder of iM3.

Philip's tireless work ethic, coupled with his innovative ideas and love of veterinary dentistry allowed iM3 to become the global business we know today. He formed iM3 as a passion project over 30 years ago with a revolutionary idea for building veterinary dental carts. An idea that vastly exceeded his expectations.

Philip was not only a successful inventor and businessman but also a beloved family man who was loved by contacts within the veterinary dental community all over the world. Everywhere we go, we meet people who ask about him. He was proud of iM3 and all our achievements, and his legacy will live on in the industry that he helped create.

Philip's vision, dedication, and passion for innovation and customer service have shaped iM3 into the leading company it is today. We are immensely grateful for his contribution to our company and the veterinary dental industry. His legacy will continue to inspire us to honour his vision and provide the best possible products and services to our customers, as we strive to maintain the high standards and values that Philip instilled in our company.

Philip was awarded the Australian Veterinary Association Meritorious Service Award in 2013 in recognition of his outstanding work for the association, an award he was extremely proud of.

A very big personality who will be deeply missed by the iM3 team and the Veterinary Industry.

One of these 🦷 is not like the others, but what is the best course of action?
This is from a 2 year old Maine C**n patient who presented for a comprehensive assessment of the oral cavity under general anaesthesia (COHAT). During the examination, Dr Kayo took full-mouth radiographs and found a unique finding.
The 408 (mandibular right 4th premolar tooth) usually has two roots (distal and mesial root), but this patient has an extra root called a supernumerary root (a light blue arrow) between these roots. The exact cause of the supernumerary roots is unknown, but it is thought to be a developmental disorder that occurs during odontogenesis in both cats and dogs (and humans) due to disturbances in Hertwig’s epithelial roots sheath from the enamel organ. The pink arrows indicate an abnormal cusp of 408.
Since there is no periodontal disease and attachment bone loss was detected, no treatment was required for this tooth.

Do you have any interesting radiographs you would like to share or need help interpreting them? Share your cases below or email to [email protected]
