It's important to keep our pets happy and safe during the festive season, so here are 3 quick tips to remember these holidays.
1. Avoid these toxic foods. Even small amounts can be fatal!
Avocados
Alcohol
Chocolate - baking chocolate and cocoa powders are also toxic.
Christmas pudding
Coffee
Cooked bones
Currants
Fruit Cakes
Grapes
Lollies
Ham
Macadamia nuts
Marinades
Onions
Pork
Raisins
Keep an eye on them and look for issues such as digestive upsets, reduced appetite, or listlessness, which are all signs that they could be in trouble. Symptoms of food poisoning may include diarrhoea, excessive panting, lack of coordination, muscle twitching, difficulty breathing, vomiting. See a vet immediately if you suspect they have eaten something they shouldn't have.
2. Prepare them physically and emotionally
If you're having a large number of guests over make sure your pet has a separate quiet space and some toys where they can go to escape the noise and relax. Taking them on a walk can help with reducing stress and tension for you both, that way they will be tired out and more likely to nap through the celebrations.
3. Keep rubbish locked away and decorations out of reach.
Curious little monkeys love to chew on things they shouldn't, even ribbons and paper wrappers can be dangerous if chewed and swallowed. Dogs and cats can rip through trash bags to get bones and other harmful food. Please keep things locked away and out of reach.
We wish you and your family a safe and happy Christmas!
