Training Tips: Why Do I Need to Change for My Dog to Change?
Hey everyone! Today’s training tip is all about understanding why your changes in behaviour can make a big difference in your dog’s behaviour.

Why Your Change Matters
Consistency: Dogs thrive on routine and predictability. When you’re consistent with commands and rules, your dog knows what to expect and can learn faster.

Leadership: Dogs look to their owners for guidance. By showing confident and calm leadership, you help your dog feel secure and understand their place in the pack.

Meet Nashoba: Our Star Student of the Week! 🌟
Say hello to Nashoba, a majestic Sarplaninac who’s making huge strides in her training journey! This stunning girl has been working hard, and we couldn’t be prouder of her progress. Here’s a peek into Nashoba’s story and what makes her so special.

Nashoba’s Training Adventure
Nashoba came to us with a strong personality and a mind of her own. Her owners, Zoe and Jax, were concerned about her stubbornness and reactivity. Together, we’ve been tackling these issues head-on, and Nashoba is proving to be a quick learner, even though she doesn't want to.

What We’re Working On
Leash Walking: Nashoba is just beginning to learn the joys of walking nicely on a leash. She used to think walks were a tug-of-war game, but with gentle yet firm corrections and lots of positive reinforcement, she’s starting to enjoy her strolls without pulling.

Basic Commands: Stubbornness was a big hurdle for Nashoba, especially when learning her sit and down commands. Initially, it took a lot of patience and persistence, but now she’s starting to understand and respond more reliably. We’ve begun to generalize these commands into new environments, helping her apply what she’s learned in different settings.

Reactivity Management: Nashoba can be wary of strangers and other dogs, making her reactive at times. We’re gradually exposing her to various environments and experiences to build her confidence and help her feel more at ease around new faces.

Zoe and Jax’s Role in Nashoba’s Success
Consistency is key, and Zoe and Jax have been incredible partners in Nashoba’s training. By using the same commands, maintaining routines, and reinforcing good behaviour, they’re helping Nashoba understand what’s expected of her. Their dedication and teamwork are truly heartwarming to see.

Kosmo has just completed our 8-week Reactivity Program, specially tailored to him and his family. Kosmo is a 4-year-old Labrador who faced unique challenges due to his early puppyhood being spent in lockdown during COVID-19. This left him with gaps in his socialization milestones, making him an over-excited, overstimulated, and undersocialized dog.

Before the program, Kosmo's owners struggled with his strength and reactivity during walks, finding it difficult to manage his lunging, barking, and pulling when he encountered other dogs, people, or even cats. His over-excitement and destructive behaviour made it hard for his owners to walk him safely or allow him inside the house.

However, with their commitment to his training and my methods, they’ve seen a remarkable transformation. Kosmo can now, under distraction:

-Hold a sit
-Hold a sit-stay
-Hold a down
-Hold a down-stay
-Hold a 'place' command
-Walk nicely on the leash
-No longer react to people, dogs, or other nuances while walking
-Listen to his owners
-No longer jump on people when they enter the yard
-Maintain strong door and back gate boundaries
-Barking less at strangers and strange noises in the backyard

Kosmo's ability to walk calmly on a leash has allowed him to lose some weight, and he's now learning how to relax inside the home with his family.

Congratulations to Kosmo for his dedication and progress, and a special acknowledgment to his owner Sharon, who has worked tirelessly and bravely to navigate the challenges of training a reactive dog. Kosmo is now a calmer, smarter gentleman, and I’m incredibly proud of all you’ve achieved together.

Well done, Kossie and Sharon! I will truly miss working with you!

Bandit is still searching for his fur-ever home!
This young Red Heeler is an absolute gem. He is not only adorable but also well-mannered (for the most part) and smart. He's already mastered commands like sit, down, and place, as well as walking nicely on the leash, showcasing his willingness to learn and his natural intelligence.
Bandit is a quick learner and respects boundaries. He understands and obeys household limits, including the back door, front door, back gate, and kitchen boundaries. Crate training is a breeze for him, making indoor life even more convenient.
While he's already a well-behaved young pup, there's even more potential waiting to be unlocked. He's sure to become an even more exceptional companion with a bit more training.
He's a social butterfly! He gets along fantastically with children and other dogs, showcasing his friendly and playful nature. While he hasn't been tested around cats or other small pets, his positive interactions with his current companions hint at his potential to adapt.

Imagine if I told you that treats aren't the magical solution to your dog's reactivity issues. What if I revealed to you a training approach that could transform your dog's behaviour both at home and in public? Picture this: teaching your dog not to dash out of doors, keeping all four paws on the floor when guests arrive, eliminating begging for food, and respecting boundaries around food left on counters or coffee tables. What if I assured you that all of this is achievable through the training I provide?

Let me share a story about Nova, who used to be the most vocal and potentially aggressive pup during outings. She'd bark, lunge, and pull at the leash whenever she had the opportunity. At home, she had no restraint, going in and out the back door as she pleased and jumping on people who entered the house. Nova ruled the roost, barking at passersby from the front windows and engaging in fence-fighting with the neighbour’s dog. Even at night, she'd bark and jump at trees, eager to chase possums. Now I’m not saying she’s perfect, but it’s only been a few months and we all know that consistency is key when it comes to anything in life!

I tried the treat-based approach—luring, distracting, and bribing—but her behaviour only worsened, reinforcing her belief that she was doing the right thing. Introducing the newest member of our pack, Bandit! It has been just under two weeks since Bandit became a temporary part of our lives, and we couldn't be more thrilled. Bandit is an energetic and spirited 8-month-old red heeler, overflowing with love and joy.
During his time with us, Bandit has made impressive strides in his training, mastering a variety of commands such as Sit, Sit-Stay, Down, Down-Stay, Place, Crate, and Recall-to-Name. We've also been diligently working on refining his manners, resulting in a significant reduction in behaviours like jumping, mouthing, stealing food, counter surfing, excessive barking, digging, and unwanted chewing.
In addition to his obedience training, Bandit is gradually improving his loose lead walking skills and has shown great progress in settling quickly into new environments. He has also learned to respect boundaries around the Back Door, Bedroom Doors, and Coffee Table. Stay tuned, as we'll be tackling the front door and the back gate later this week.
