🚨PARALYSIS TICKS: Tick cases are seen year-round in Queensland, but especially between August and March (known as Tick Season).

One particular tick us Queenslanders need to be extra careful about is the PARALYSIS TICK (as pictured). Although tiny in size, paralysis ticks are one of the most dangerous parasites that can cause severe illness and even death to our pets.

🦘🐨Ticks normally attach themselves to native animals such as wallabies, kangaroos and possums, so please be extra careful if you live in or near bush land areas with wildlife as ticks will be prevalent!

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS
🚨Paralysis of the hind legs
🚨Unsteady staggering walk, uncoordination
🚨Dry cough, gagging and/or vomiting
🚨Change in your furbaby’s meow or bark
🚨 Laboured breathing
🚨 Refusal to eat
❗️ Note: Some pets may not show hind limb paralysis at first, initially exhibiting a gurgling choking cough, however their condition will quickly deteriorate.
🚑 If you notice any of the above symptoms, please contact your vet and search for ticks on them
🚑 If you find a tick on your pet, remove the entire tick immediately and contact your vet.

WHAT CAN I DO?
✅ Check your pets daily for ticks 🔎 Feel for small lumps and remember to also check under their collar, between their toes, lips and gum line, around their butt, and inside their ears.
✅ Use flea and tick preventative treatment to effectively protect your pet from the risk of ticks.

🐾🍑 A**L GLANDS! 🍑🐾

Now that I have your attention, let's talk about what A**l glands are and who has them?! 🐱🐶

A**l glands ( Scent glands or sacs) are located close to your cat or dog's a**s.
These glands are often released on top of your pets' 💩in order to assist them in marking their territory, it also allows them to recognise one another through smell. 🥴👃
Sometimes our pets have problems expressing themselves and their a**l glands can become impacted. 😓🙀🐶

You may notice your pet has full a**l glands as they might;
* Scoot (Drag their bottom on the ground).
* Have trouble toileting. 💩
* Turn around abruptly and lick or bite their behind. 👅
* Swelling around the a**s.

🔆🔥Temperatures are soaring in Queensland! And while we can escape to the air conditioner or strip off to cool down, we need to consider our furry friends in the extreme heat. 🥵Just like us, many pets can be affected by heat stress or heat stroke.

🐶🐱Cats are normally great at finding a nice cool place to sleep it off, dogs however need a little more TLC when it gets hot. 🐾The small surface areas of their paws are not the most effective way of getting rid of heat in their bodies. 👅Instead, they use evaporation of moisture from their tongues, nasal passages and lungs to cool down by panting.

🥰Here are some tips on keeping your pets cool through summer
🚰💧WATER: Make sure your furbaby has plenty of water and shade in a well-ventilated area
❄️🧊STAY COOL: Top up their bowls with cold water. Get creative and whip up some refrigerated snacks (frozen banana pieces 🍌 and sugar-free peanut butter 🥜 anyone?)
🌙🐕COOL WALKS: Reconsider taking your pet dog on day walks as the hot pavement can burn their feet. If it’s uncomfortable for you to walk barefoot then it will be for them too! Head out for a stroll in the early morning or just before bed and stick to grassy areas.
💦🌊STAY WET: Invest in a small paddling or wading pool so they can cool down🛁
🚫🚗NO LEAVING IN CARS: Never leave your dog in the car! It takes less than 10 mins for a car to reach lethal temperatures even in shaded areas with the windows open

🚨How do I know if my pet is affected by heat?
⚠️Changes in behaviour (sluggish or lethargic)
⚠️Disinterest in food and water
⚠️Heavy panting
‼️Contact your vet immediately if your pet is lethargic, relentlessly panting, drooling, vomiting or collapsing
