🥳Vet Around the Corner would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! 🎉

Please be aware with Fireworks set to take place all over town this evening, here are a few tips to keep our fur friends calm and comfortable.

🏠 Keep them indoors and secure your yard. Fireworks can often frighten our pets causing them to panic and try to escape.

📞 Check to make sure your pets microchip details are up to date. In the case they do escape, this is the best way vets and local council can reunite them with you.

🐶🐱 Create a safe place for them to retreat if they feel scared. Ensure they have their favourite blanket or toy for comfort.

With Halloween right around the corner, it's important to keep our furry friends safe from spooky surprises! 🎃 While we humans love a good treat, did you know that candies and chocolates can be harmful even dangerous for pets. Here are a few tips to keep your pets safe this Halloween:

🍬 Keep treats out of reach! Chocolate, lollies, and especially sugar-free candies containing xylitol are toxic for pets. Even small amounts can lead to serious health issues.

👻 Pet-friendly treats only! If you’d like to include your pets in the Halloween fun, give them their own pet safe goodies.

🚪 Trick or treating caution! The excitement of Halloween night can be overwhelming for pets. If you expect visitors, make sure they’re in a safe, quiet space to keep them calm.

⚡️⛈STORM PHOBIAS - Storms can be very scary for some of our canine furbabies, and it’s never nice seeing them feeling so unsettled and afraid 😣. Some common signs are escape, inappropriate soiling, vocalising, destructive behaviours, trembling, hiding, pacing and salivating.

🤷🏻😱WHAT causes storm phobias?
Phobias are exaggerated irrational responses to something (regardless of whether they cause harm). They develop from fears and can often be triggered by something harmless. 🌩With storm phobias, it could be the change in barometric pressure, gusts of leaves and wind as the storm approaches, or small rain showers.

🐶🐕HOW can I manage my dog during a storm?
🌈Check weather reports and monitor events such as New Year’s Eve for risk of exposure to noise sensitives💥
😌Create a safe haven for your dog in an appropriate area of the house
🙉Background “white noise”, sound muting cage covers may reduce the intensity of noise
🤗If it helps your dog feel more settled, talking calmly, long smooth strokes and body contact may help

OPTIONS of treating storm phobias:
1. 🎧Desensitisation: This is exposing your dog to the scary stimulus starting at a very low level so they are not scared. This may be helpful if your dog’s fear is the sound of thunder. Playing a recording of thunder noises at a very low volume and gradually increasing the volume as your dog gets used to the volume may help.
2. 💆🏻‍♀️Relaxation training: Train your dog to settle and relax on their bed before any scary sounds are added. Encourage calm responses to cues (eg “lie down”) and follow with a tasty treat.
3. 🩺💊Depending on severity, anti-anxiety medication may be needed and should be given 1 hour before the storm develops to have a chance to work. These can be prescribed by your vet. If your dog has other behavioural issues, your vet may prescribe a daily anti-anxiety medication, with an additional therapeutic agent to be used for storms.
