Gorgeous Emmeline, helping me around the farm today. Emme is part of our WRR team and we love sharing in her life with her awesome family. Emme was ‘Watermelon Moonshine’ in Cam’s litter. A girl we kept in our program because of her amazing drive, beautiful nature and uncanny likeness to her beloved momma, Camille. This little lady was special to us from the start and I love her visits. ❤️🐾

When we say Whiskey River Retrievers are a family, we mean it. Today was something we have been planning for a while. A full day of training, learning, friendship and enjoying our beautiful dogs together. Truly using them for what they were bred for. The camaraderie, laughs and fun today was awesome. Im so proud of what Whiskey River is becoming.
Thank you everyone for making such a huge effort to hang out and enjoy your dogs today. This is what breeding, owning and training Goldens is all about for me. 🧡 Look out Northern Rivers we are bringing training days down to the ranch!!!

⚠️ Get ready for some harsh truth
By my standards, optimal amount of ANIMAL protein in a dog’s diet is 75-85%. Cats are even more carnivorous and 90-95% of their diet should be ANIMAL protein.
Commercial dog food is only required to include 22% protein BUT this can include protein from plant matter that is not as digestible. A study brought to my attention by Dogs First showed of protein stated in the kibble, less than 75% of it was actually available to the animal. Krogdahl et al. (2004) tested a range of different dry food diets. They found that Eukanuba Puppy stated 27.9% protein, only 20.3% was actually available; Proplan Puppy stated 26.2% protein, only 20.1% was available to the test animals; Royal Canin Puppy stated 21.7% protein, only 16.7% was available; Hill’s Puppy stated 26.8% protein, only 20.8% was available to the animal.
Big pet food companies use less animal protein because it’s expensive and they want to make more money, but you physically can’t make an extruded kibble with 75% animal protein using current manufacturing and processing techniques. I took a kibble manufacturing course at KSU to learn the process myself.

Australia becomes first country approved for Bravecto Quantum.
A new annual injection for dogs aged 12 months and older.
Merck announced the product in 2023, which experienced delays before becoming available in July 2024 at select veterinary clinics.
There's concern over some vets' social media posts suggesting simultaneous administration of the annual vaccine, heartworm injection, and Bravecto Quantum during one visit.
This is concerning for a number of reasons:
1. Are all vets administering the heart worm injection at the same time as the annual or triennial vaccination?
Some history behind ProHeart 12 annual injection for heartworms.
ProHeart 6 was used in the United States pulled from the market and reevaluated for safety and efficacy.
The product was permitted back as ProHeart 12 with the requirement your vet provide you with a Client Information Sheet and discuss side effects to look out for.
Does your vet discuss and provide this information with you?
Caution should be used when administering ProHeart 12 in dogs with pre-existing allergic disease, including food allergy, atopy, and flea allergy dermatitis.
Caution should be used when administering ProHeart 12 concurrently with vaccinations. Adverse reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported following the concomitant use of moxidectin microspheres and vaccinations.

2. Since Australian dogs are the first users, potential side effects not observed during clinical trials might surface.
No specific adverse events data is available yet for Bravecto Quantum, beyond those associated with Bravecto chewables and spot-ons containing fluralaner.
3. Public interest focuses on cost and availability for cats rather than understanding product functionality and handling potential reactions.
Once administered, the injection cannot be reversed, necessitating clear guidelines for managing adverse reactions.
I hope this information gives you motivation to ask more questions and do more research.
As the active ingredient in this product is a known neurotoxin, it's not a product for Gus or Mindy.

Herby update 🩷💙
Thank you everyone for your kind donations.
We got a call late last night, Herby's urinary catheter was popped back in, he now has urine flowing and he is eating!!! Herby also had had his renal parameters checked and thankfully they are all looking good, he is having urine sent off to make sure there is nothing sinister going on as well. He is looking like he will be staying at the specialist centre until the earliest Monday. But for now we are waiting for results and updates.

Something really special that we filmed with @antinol.au last year. Antinol is a huge part of our breeding and dog raising program. It was rad to spend a day showing the team what their product does for our dogs, sharing the special, unique and really dedicated program we have with them and of course letting them meet our gorgeous Spooky pups. Our year consists of sharing their lives with you, training, showing and competing them. Hopefully helping our families to make better choices for their dogs health and wellbeing. Training Winnie is a vibe for me. This has taken me a long time to achieve with distractions, off lead and throwing together a few different commands that I’ve been teaching her daily. 3 years actually. To get this solid; and this is only the start! As I always tell our WRR families, our dogs deserve commitment, one on one time and dedication from us. They are intelligent, capable and solid companions. If we do not teach them how to live in our human world how can we expect them to thrive and cope? Many behaviour issues in dogs can be traced right back to the lack of training and knowledge of the owner. That doesn’t mean beat yourself up, it just means more opportunities to grow, learn and listen to people who are exactly where you want to be with your training journey. Every trainer who has worked with my dogs and I, have given me such valuable lessons and helped shape dogs like Winnie. Training can be completely enjoyable and for us it’s a time out from the world to hang with that one special, precious and glorious dog we are so lucky to own.

Tips For Raising Goldens: Licking! One of the most amazing things to watch is how maternal behaviours develop very quickly in new mothers. Almost immediately a mother dog will begin licking the pups. She is quite rough and this is a good thing. It encourages circulation, elimination and as we have now seen in studies done on rats - it may have even more beneficial effects for later in life! Happy first birthday to my precious Elvis Babies! Phew what do I say. You guys arrived pretty quickly as your mommy Austen is accustomed to. All healthy, happy little bundles. Then baby Elvis arrived sleeping… our wonderful vet nurse @thedogdoula_ worked tirelessly and woke our little man! How lucky she did! He is now so loved, and so healthy and happy! All of you pop into my mind often, you are the last litter from our special girl and you will always have such a firm spot in my heart. It was a pleasure to watch you come into this world and teach you about love, kindness and prepare you for the big world you have all gone into. I love you my tiny angels. I hope you all got cake!
