Keeping up with learning is vital as I reflect on staying up for 4 long nights to complete this course on Resolving Canine Reactivity by Suzanne Clothier (USA time zone).

Also, each Thursday at midnight I meet with the team at Dog*Biz (USA) to learn more and strengthen my skills so that I can be the best for my clients.

Sadly, dog training is an unregulated industry, which means that anyone can call themselves a dog trainer.

So, before you employ a trainer ask to see their

- experience.

I had the top obedience dog in 1976 and been training since. That’s a lot of experience but experience is not enough. Ongoing learning is vital.

A - Adolescence

Although it is a book written for adolescent dog owners, most of the information has come from human research.

Almost one third of all dogs will not see their third birthday. They will be given up for adoption, rehomed, or euthanised, all because of their undesirable behaviour during the adolescent years. They’re not cute puppies anymore nor are they mature adults and pet owners just don’t know what to do.

Today, I asked my puppy learners, Floyd and Kiki, what was important to them and what they would like other pet parents to know

So here is their Affirmation!

I want to learn in an environment free from difficult distractions.

I want to always feel safe.

I will always work to the best of my ability with the training I have received.

If I can’t do something, I’m not being disobedient, it’s just too difficult for me right now.
There may be too many distractions,
the intensity is too high,
the distance is too far, or
the duration is too long.

If I can’t do something, please break it down into smaller pieces and help me win each progressive step

When you test me in more difficult situations, go slow so that I can have success because once I have learnt through lots of repetition, I will become fluent and make you proud.

I’ll try to be courageous when I learn new things, but please be patient because some things are really scary!

I want to succeed, so just go slow with lots of kindness and lots of encouragement, and when I learn, our bond and relationship will also grow!

I love to learn.
