Neue Schule has scientifically researched the difference between ring sizes and found there was no mechanical advantage to choosing a larger or smaller loose ring, and ring size will not alter the action of the bit.

A larger ring is often employed as a snaffle and the smaller ring is often used as a Bridoon. However, owners of ponies or horses with a smaller head may wish to use the smaller ring for aesthetic purposes as this tends to look more in proportion. The larger ring is also less likely to pull through the horse’s mouth than a smaller ring but may interfere with the noseband or rub the underside of the cheek bone.

Congratulations to Neue Schule rider Yasmin Ingham and Banzai du Loir on their win in the CCI4*-S in a very quality field! 🏆

One of the curiosities of the Longines Luhmühlen Horse Trials is its scheduling: on Saturday and Sunday, the CCI5* class jumps first, and then, after all the excitement and whirlwind of emotions of that, it’s

The Tranz Angled Universal is an excellent step up from a snaffle. It has a gentle mouthpiece while subtly employing other pressure points to avoid offending the horse. Brilliant for faster work such as jumping, as it allows you to turn more easily and generally eliminates the head toss when asking for the downward transition, such as when shortening before a fence.

This is a very popular bit and one you will find in most rider’s bit collections. 🙌

When you're putting your NS bit onto your bridle, the arrow on the end of the mouthpiece when in situ should be on the horse’s near side facing forwards. For instance, if you are sat on the horse it should be on your left hand side. This is to ensure that when fitted the mouthpiece/angled lozenge operates as intended.

The Loose Ring Snaffle is the most common type of snaffle available, though there are many variations. 🐴

When it comes to ring size, our normal NS snaffle usually has larger rings (70mm) such as the image on the left, while the snaffle on the right with the smaller ring (55mm) is usually used as a bridoon for use in a double bridle, as the smaller ring won't get in the way of the curb bit. However, a pony or a horse with a small and delicate head sometimes looks better in a smaller ring.

There are a range of different cheekpieces available on all Neue Schule bits. The fixed cheeks on bits such as the D-ring, Eggbutt or full cheek snaffles can offer a more stable feel for the horse and encourage them to take a more consistent contact, taking the rein forwards and down and offering directional control.

The loose rings discourage horses that are likely to fix and block through the rein and gives the rider the option to gently vibrate the horse off the rein should there be the need.

❓ How much poll pressure does each bit in the Neue Schule range produce, according to cheek type? Neue Schule founder and bitting guru, Heather Hyde, conducted a deep dive into this.

The results are, in some instances, straight forward and in others help to resolve longstanding debates.

Cleaning your bit after every ride is an important habit to have! 🧼 A clean bit means a comfortable mouth for your horse.

After each use it is advisable to wash your bit under the tap and dry it thoroughly, or use a waterless Bit Wash like this one from Libertè Bits which helps to increase bit acceptance with it's natural peppermint flavour. It is not necessary to polish your bit, however if you wish to do so you may use any reputable metal polish, ensuring that there is no residue left on the bit.

Experience softness and lift with the Neue Schule Verbindend! This bit is a true miracle worker for horses who struggle with being heavy on the forehand, resistant to the rider's aids, or tend to get their tongue over the bit. It offers a gentle solution without causing any additional issues.

For riders seeking greater refinement, bend, and precision in lateral movements, the Neue Schule Verbindend is also a valuable tool. Your horse will immediately feel a lift in their shoulder and have complete freedom of the tongue, allowing for a full range of hindquarter movement. This results in a true self-carriage and a feeling of working through.

The NS elevator cheekpiece is very versatile and offers three rein options, including using pelham roundings. It can also be used with a curb strap from the top rings to increase the effectiveness of the bit, and the "head lowering" action through the curb pressure.

There are many cheekpieces available in the NS range, and the D-Ring is great for horses who are overactive in the mouth in a loose ring as it offers great stability.

The D-Ring also enhances directional control making it exceptionally good for tight turns during faster work as the mouthpiece should not slide across the mouth. It’s also good for flatwork as it gives the rider greater shoulder control on a circle and helps set up the bend when changing the rein or with lateral work.
