Neue Schule has scientifically researched the difference between ring sizes and found there was no mechanical advantage to choosing a larger or smaller loose ring, and ring size will not alter the action of the bit.

A larger ring is often employed as a snaffle and the smaller ring is often used as a Bridoon. However, owners of ponies or horses with a smaller head may wish to use the smaller ring for aesthetic purposes as this tends to look more in proportion. The larger ring is also less likely to pull through the horse’s mouth than a smaller ring but may interfere with the noseband or rub the underside of the cheek bone.

Congratulations to Neue Schule rider Yasmin Ingham and Banzai du Loir on their win in the CCI4*-S in a very quality field! 🏆

The Tranz Angled Universal is an excellent step up from a snaffle. It has a gentle mouthpiece while subtly employing other pressure points to avoid offending the horse. Brilliant for faster work such as jumping, as it allows you to turn more easily and generally eliminates the head toss when asking for the downward transition, such as when shortening before a fence.

This is a very popular bit and one you will find in most rider’s bit collections. 🙌

When you're putting your NS bit onto your bridle, the arrow on the end of the mouthpiece when in situ should be on the horse’s near side facing forwards. For instance, if you are sat on the horse it should be on your left hand side. This is to ensure that when fitted the mouthpiece/angled lozenge operates as intended.

The Loose Ring Snaffle is the most common type of snaffle available, though there are many variations. 🐴

When it comes to ring size, our normal NS snaffle usually has larger rings (70mm) such as the image on the left, while the snaffle on the right with the smaller ring (55mm) is usually used as a bridoon for use in a double bridle, as the smaller ring won't get in the way of the curb bit. However, a pony or a horse with a small and delicate head sometimes looks better in a smaller ring.

There are a range of different cheekpieces available on all Neue Schule bits. The fixed cheeks on bits such as the D-ring, Eggbutt or full cheek snaffles can offer a more stable feel for the horse and encourage them to take a more consistent contact, taking the rein forwards and down and offering directional control.

The loose rings discourage horses that are likely to fix and block through the rein and gives the rider the option to gently vibrate the horse off the rein should there be the need.

❓ How much poll pressure does each bit in the Neue Schule range produce, according to cheek type? Neue Schule founder and bitting guru, Heather Hyde, conducted a deep dive into this.

The results are, in some instances, straight forward and in others help to resolve longstanding debates.

Cleaning your bit after every ride is an important habit to have! 🧼 A clean bit means a comfortable mouth for your horse.

After each use it is advisable to wash your bit under the tap and dry it thoroughly, or use a waterless Bit Wash like this one from Libertè Bits which helps to increase bit acceptance with it's natural peppermint flavour. It is not necessary to polish your bit, however if you wish to do so you may use any reputable metal polish, ensuring that there is no residue left on the bit.

Experience softness and lift with the Neue Schule Verbindend! This bit is a true miracle worker for horses who struggle with being heavy on the forehand, resistant to the rider's aids, or tend to get their tongue over the bit. It offers a gentle solution without causing any additional issues.

For riders seeking greater refinement, bend, and precision in lateral movements, the Neue Schule Verbindend is also a valuable tool. Your horse will immediately feel a lift in their shoulder and have complete freedom of the tongue, allowing for a full range of hindquarter movement. This results in a true self-carriage and a feeling of working through.

The NS elevator cheekpiece is very versatile and offers three rein options, including using pelham roundings. It can also be used with a curb strap from the top rings to increase the effectiveness of the bit, and the "head lowering" action through the curb pressure.

There are many cheekpieces available in the NS range, and the D-Ring is great for horses who are overactive in the mouth in a loose ring as it offers great stability.

The D-Ring also enhances directional control making it exceptionally good for tight turns during faster work as the mouthpiece should not slide across the mouth. It’s also good for flatwork as it gives the rider greater shoulder control on a circle and helps set up the bend when changing the rein or with lateral work.

Is your sensitive or fussy in the contact? Does your horse have a large tongue and sensitive bars? Or do you have a horse with a small mouth and very little room for a bit?

The Neue Schule Turtle Tactio has been designed for all of the above.

The Turtle Tactio mouthpiece has a locking link and unique shape which allows the bit to almost float in the horse’s mouth giving room for the tongue and restricting pressure to the horse’s bars.

Salox Gold, Neue Schule's unique metal alloy, was scientifically developed specifically for use as a horse bit to encourage relaxed acceptance of the bit.

NS aims to keep the bit comfortable but neutral in the horse’s mouth. We don’t want our horses to inwardly fixate on the bit, but instead be receptive to all our aids.

A mouthpiece that doesn’t taste or emit a smell is one that will remain neutral in the mouth- after all we don’t want our horses chomping and sucking at the bit because it tastes sweet or is flavoured!

Do you need something to help promote a true and consistent contact? Have a young horse that needs some help with lateral work and straightness? 🐴

The Neue Schule Tranz Angled Eggbutt gives stability within the mouth, boosting the horse's confidence to seek the bit. This bit is very beneficial for short, tense necks and excellent for directional control and no loss in feel unlike other fixed cheek.

It can also benefit a horse that is inconsistent with the contact or that tends to sit behind the contact rather than take the bit forward. The Eggbutt cheeks can also help a rider with unsteady hands by smoothing out some of the bumps and wobbles in the aids to the horse.

Many decades of insight into understanding the important dynamics and drivers of communication between horse and rider have driven the design of our amazing bits.

This knowledge and passion is deeply embedded in Neue Schule and has evolved to the point where the product design and development process is a refined art.

It is vital that in developing the products we are able to translate this insight and artistic interpretation into beautifully engineered bits that accurately capture the design intent.

Neue Schule deploys state of the art engineering techniques to capture this design and from a computer system translates this into a manufactured bit, capable of delivering the performance that our customers demand.

There are many different types of cheekpieces that all serve different purposes. D-Ring snaffles offer the rider some stability to the mouthpiece, which may assist either for a horse that is not confident in taking the contact, or for a rider with unsteady hands.

D-Ring bits are also a good transition for a young horse currently working in a full cheek or for horses that need reinforcement of the turning aids.

15/01/2024

Moving your horse into a double bridle set for the first time can be exciting, but needs to be done tactfully. Doubles should not be introduced until the horse is fully established in a snaffle.

Allow the horse to become fully accustomed to the feel of two bits in situ and always work initially off the bridoon. It is prudent in the first instance, to walk the horse in hand bringing him back several times to halt purely off the snaffle rein.

If everything is going well and the horse is relaxed, mount up in the arena and work evenly on both reins performing up and down transitions from halt to trot through walk. If your horse is still accepting and relaxed in doubles, then subtly start to introduce the curb rein in conjunction with the bridoon rein.

If everything is going ok and your horse hacks out sedately, then this would be advisable. The reasoning behind this is that we do not wish the doubles to become the focal point in the mouth and in an arena, the horse is more likely to fixate on something new in the mouth as opposed to enjoying a normal familiar hack.

The last thing we want is for the horse to associate doubles with harder work as this will create tension. This is also why it is so important we do not rush the introduction of the doubles.

The Neue Schule Verbindend is one of our miracle bits for helping horses who are heavy on the forehand, resistant to the aids or getting the tongue over the bit without severity as a side effect.

It is also helpful for riders looking for more refinement, bend and fine tuning in the lateral work. Your horse will be immediately more lifted from the shoulder with complete freedom of the tongue to encourage full range of hindquarter action and a true self carriage and feel of working through.

The D-Ring cheekpiece enhances directional control making it exceptionally good for tight turns during faster work as the mouthpiece should not slide across the mouth. It’s also good for dressage as it gives the rider greater shoulder control on a circle and helps set up the bend when changing the rein or with lateral work.

The stability the D-Ring offers, along with the clever design of the mouthpiece, is often useful for horses that are overactive in the mouth in a loose ring design.

Neue Schule bits come in a range of mouthpiece styles with the D-Ring cheekpiece. Chat to us today if you need any help in finding the perfect bit for your horse. 💙

💭 Do you know what the arrow on one side of some of our mouthpieces means?

Some Neue Schule products have an arrow logo on the side of the arm end. For these products it is essential that the mouthpiece is positioned within the horse’s mouth with the arrow logo on the left hand side (near side) and with the arrow pointing forwards, as in the picture below.

Products with arrows indicate that some features of the mouthpiece design are intended to operate correctly only when a contact is taken, ensuring comfortable and effective use.

One of our most popular bits! 🙌🐢 The Turtle Top mouthpiece, which is inspired by the shell of the box turtle, prevents downward pressure to the horse’s tongue encourages the horse to accept the bit and take the contact forward.

The Eggbutt cheekpiece keeps the bit still and steady in the horse’s mouth giving the horse a more stable and constant feel.
