On a recent walk at a local park, I rounded a corner and surprised a bunny who was sitting right in the middle of the path. I was only a few feet away, and yet he remained in place. I spoke to him softly, explaining that the walking path was no safe place for little bunnies. But before you go callin...

Are you raising your dog human? No Criticism here; I am just issuing a gentle reminder. My dog is a fully-fledged family member. But I'm careful to ensure he has plenty of opportunities to engage in species-specific behaviours. As much as we love our dogs, they aren't human (shocking, I know!) and see the world differently. For example, dogs can smell one drop of protein in a volume of water the size of two Olympic swimming pools. They are a nose on four legs and highly efficient scavengers. Giving your dog the best in life means allowing them to spend time doing "dog-ing". Make sure your dog has lots of opportunities to dog every day.

DON’T FORCE ME TO BE SOCIAL!
Do we like everyone we meet? Do we all enjoy socialising and spending time with lots of different people? I certainly don’t and refer to myself as a “caninetrovert” – a person that much prefers to spend time with dogs rather than people. Maybe I’m a little different to the “norm”, but be that as it may, we are all individuals with different personality styles and social preferences.

Some of us are extroverts, gaining energy from interacting with people; some of us introverts, who find people draining and need alone time to recharge our social batteries and some of us are somewhere in between.

If we acknowledge that we are all different in this way, we also need to acknowledge and accept that our dogs are similar.

They could be overly affectionate or fiercely independent, approachable or nervous, energetic or laid back, confident or cautious, sociable, tolerant, selective or reactive.

We may be really disappointed when our dogs turn out not to be the socialite we expected them to be.

Some may even see this as a behaviour problem that needs to be “fixed”. Sometimes it can be improved, especially if the cause is from a negative experience, but genetics, breed tendencies, individual personalities, health and age all contribute to tolerance levels and sociability.

Accept your dog for who they are, allow them to choose whether they want to be sociable or not, respect their choices and never force an interaction that your dog is not comfortable with.

Yes depends on the dog, do they ‘inhale’ bones and are a risk of choking, do they resource guard and may potentially break teeth in their rush to keep (don’t take bones-off dogs). How does it effect their digestion? I’ve had one dog who was made constipated by bones and another who needed more bones to produce good stools. Be careful and know your dog.

Toilet training

Toilet training

TOILETING TROUBLES
House training or potty training a puppy or even an older adopted dog is often time consuming, frustrating and messy.

The way this is taught can make all the difference between success or ongoing mishaps which sometimes continue right through to later life.

Successful toilet training is not the responsibility of our dogs – it is our responsibility, our commitment and consistency to train this in the right way.

So many owners use punishment to try to teach their dog that going inside is not acceptable.
Punishment is often the main reason why toilet training fails, creating more problems than it solves.

Methods like shouting, smacking, being locked outside or rubbing their nose in the mess only results in fear, anxiety, stress, mistrust and confusion.

When a dog is punished for eliminating inside or in the wrong place, they often associate the punishment with the action and not the location of where it is done.

I imagine their thought process would go something like this - “Peeing or pooing is something that makes this person really angry because I get punished when I do it” - “Next time I have to go, I need to make sure that they’re not watching or find somewhere to go where they won’t see it”.

Maybe you then keep taking your dog outside and wait for them go, but nothing happens. They then come back inside and do it behind the couch, making you even more angry!

Punishment has now created a fear of elimination, whether it’s outside or inside. If you think about this from a dog’s point of view, it really does make sense.

High value rewards and praise for going in the right place, supervision, routines and schedules, the products used to clean up mess and even the surfaces your dog prefers to use are all important factors for successful training.

Toilet training doesn’t happen overnight, it takes time, patience, commitment and consistency.

There will be mishaps, there will be messes to clean, there will be frustration, but as long as there is progress, you are on the right track!

Moving homes is a massive undertaking that is recognised as one of life’s stressful events for people. It also can be very stressful for our canine friends.

But there are steps we can take to reduce our dog's stress levels in the lead up for the move, the move and after the move. This is the topic of my latest blog - which you can read here

You have to train a dog to walk on lead, it’s not a normal dog behaviour and we often walk to slow for most dogs. Then there can be difficulties with the environment that we don’t see, hear or smell. Jerking your dog does not tell them what they should do, it’s much easier to show them what you want them to do. And if you, as we all do sometimes, have bad timing or are inconsistent with punishment then the dog will definitely not understand what you want. Pronged collars (also known as a pinch or constriction collar) are illegal to import into Australia but sadly are only illegal to use on dogs in Victoria, Tasmania and Queensland. The RSPCA is opposed to the use of dog pronged collars due to the potential risk of injury, pain and suffering they cause and because other more humane training methods are available.

Someone asked me recently what good play looked like between dogs. Here is an example of play with excellent bite inhibition, taking turns to be on top, etc. I wouldn’t encourage the keeping of wild animals but it seems the person rehabilitates animals.

It is complicated. It can be an invitation or a distance increasing signal. For Abel it’s about itches, cooling down and maybe a little self massaging.

We recently launched an education campaign about positive reinforcement training because we are concerned dog-loving viewers will be misinformed by Channel 10's upcoming new show Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly Australia, which is based on outdated, quick-fix and aversive dog training methods.
We are calling pet owners to with rewards-based and force-free training and help prevent pet surrenders to already overcrowded animal shelters!
You can follow our FB page for commentary by our force-free trainers on humane and lasting solutions to dog behaviour problems featured in the upcoming episodes, which begin on July 13.
Managing dog behaviour can be a challenge but achievable with positive solutions!

Abel loves 95% of dogs and really doesn’t like the other 5% (he was attacked by entire male dogs). If you see Abel being friendly with other dogs that doesn’t mean he will like your entire male dog. He also has some pain issues and he will not like your bouncy adolescent pup. If you can’t keep your dog away then have it on leash. This is for your dog’s protection.

It seems so obvious doesn't it, "Some Dogs Need Space". Why does your dog need space?

Barking at passers-by is a normal dog behaviour. Sitting at the window and waiting for someone to bark at for hours, is not.

I'd like to save you some time and money. No piece of equipment will stop your dog pulling on lead forever.

You know what you can easily do to reduce your dog pulling on their lead? Change their walking environment.

Neighbourhood walks require a lot of skill and are just too difficult for young dogs and pups to be successful at.

Grab a comfy harness for your dog, get a long lead, and head into some quiet bushland. Take food, stop regularly and sprinkle some goodies on the ground for your dog to enjoy.

Training loose lead walking takes time and patience. Invest the time and energy into training, rather than looking for a quick fix piece of equipment to do the job for you.

This time of the year, I get calls from people whose dogs are toileting inside the house.

Why? Wet grass and rain! I can completely understand that if a dog has no good reason (reinforcement) to toilet outside, they will go inside!

How do you prevent this? Go outside with your dog and reward them with a few tasty morsels after they relieve themselves. The more you do this, the less likely they are to go inside. Close doors and remove access to locations of previous accidents and watch them closely.

For pups and young dogs, keep up your end of the bargain by continuing to reward them for toileting outside. Do this for longer than you think you need to.

Once your dog or puppy wakes up, eats, has a play, or it has been 60-120 mins since last time they went outside, take them outside and wait until they go to the toilet. Reward them, then bring them back inside.

Toilet training is simple, but it takes supervision from you and time to create memories for your dog trading their p*e or p**p for rewards outside 😀
