Once upon a time, in a world where dog biscuits were considered a currency and belly rubs were the ultimate jackpot, there existed a group of highly perceptive dogs. These fluffy philosophers pondered life’s deepest questions: “Why do cats taunt us through the window?” and “Who the hell does the postman think he is, stepping on the front lawn?”

But one day, their peaceful existence was disrupted by an shocking invasion—the smell of human stress.
Yes, dear reader, it turns out that when humans sweat and breathe out their worries, dogs catch a whiff of their emotional turmoil. And what did these discerning (but actually rather intelligent) dogs do? They made more ‘pessimistic’ choices, as if they’d just binge-watched a season finale of The Bold & The Beautiful.

Picture this: Lily Blossom the Bichon, sitting by the window, gazing out at the world. Her tail droops like a wilted daisy. Why? Because he caught a whiff of my stress odour. It hit her like a tonne of chewed-up tennis balls, likely balls Lily herself damaged. Suddenly, her toy box seemed emptier, the cat outside more elusive, and the prospect of fetch downright bleak.

Researchers at the University of Bristol in England conducted a series of trials to unravel this canine conundrum. They recruited 18 dog-owner duos (yes, duos—because every dog deserves a sidekick) and introduced them to the world of ambiguous bowls. These bowls sat between two known locations—one filled with treats, the other disappointingly empty. The dogs had to decide: “Is this bowl half-full or half-empty?”

Now, here’s where it gets juicy. The researchers unleashed two scents upon our furry heroes: the stress odour (think algebra tests and overdue taxes, with an occassional phone call from the ATO) and the relaxed odour (cue ocean waves and hammocks). When the stress smell wafted through the air, the dogs hesitated. They approached the ambiguous bowl like a detective sizing up a suspect. “Is this a treat trap?” they wondered. Their optimism left the builder faster than a chew toy in a teething puppy’s mouth.

But when the relaxed scent enveloped the room, oh, what a transformation! The dogs pranced toward the bowl, tails held high, eyes sparkling with hope. “Surely, this bowl contains treasures beyond our wildest dreams!” they thought. And maybe it did—a hidden stash of bacon-flavored biscuits, perhaps?

So why the pessimism during stress sniffing? The researchers suspect it’s a survival tactic. You see, dogs are wise creatures. They know that stress drains energy faster than a cat zigzagging across the yard. By approaching the ambiguous bowl with caution, they conserve their precious doggy mojo. It’s like saying, “I’ll save my enthusiasm for tennis ball-chasing emergencies.”

And there you have it, dear reader. The next time you’re stressed, spare a thought for your canine companions. They’re out there, noses twitching, deciphering the emotional symphony of your sweat and breath. And who knows? Maybe they’re secretly plotting a revolution—one where treats flow freely, cats surrender, and belly rubs are the national anthem.

So go forward, my fellow humans, and stress less. Your furbaby is counting on it. And remember, in the grand opera of life, even a pessimistic paw can find its rhythm.

For many pet owners, including myself up until just over 12 months ago – we tend to think all sorts of fresh meat are safe for dogs to eat, especially chicken. It’s one of the most consumed meats, and it’s delicious – so who wouldn’t consider giving it to their dog too? 🍗

Well, it turns out, chicken may not be so good for our dogs as we first thought.
Research suggests that around 15% of all dogs suffer from chicken allergies, and many of those allergies are undiagnosed, with most not even knowing about it.
The allergy stems from a strange high-defense response towards a protein in chicken meat, which the immune system is considering an intrusive threat.

Normally, when foods enter the body, they’re broken down into amino acids by the digestive system, and then they’re absorbed by enterocytes (a form of white blood cells), however if the digestive system doesn’t break these foods down, then the body sees this as an intruders, and attacks.

This attack can leave your dog vulnerable, especially when they’re young and still growing.
I’m not saying chicken is something to never give your dog, but I would probably limit it to a treat only and find a substitute for your dog’s protein source through meat. 🥩

Can you believe we are already welcoming in the final month of Winter!?
It feels like Winter only just started, or maybe that's because the Winter chill seems to have only recently just kicked in! 🥶

Firstly, I'd just like to say, I don't much like to use the word 'mutt'... I much prefer 'mixed' 😂

Nonetheless though, today is National Mutt Day, and reminder to all that despite their cuteness, Cavoodles and the occassional Labradoodle don't fully run the world (even though Mixed-breeds are just as cute!) 🐩

If you own a mixed-breed furbaby, give them some extra love today! 🐕

I'll just leave you to it then 😂

Did you know that today is rain day? 🌧️

I know at least over here in Perth, we have had day after day of lots of rain, which is great for the garden, and not so great for driving in. 😂

Now I know it's cold but doesn't today just feel like a great day to play out in the rain with your furbaby! Obviously not the cat though, they're usually just chilling out somewhere warm. 🐈

I know what you're probably thinking right now seeing this post... "Oh boy, another why peanut butter could be dangerous post", but no. This isn't one of those posts. 🥜

Something I notice with the many articles that surface is that nobody really explains why Xylitol, the dangerous ingredient in peanut butter, is so dangerous. That’s where this post can help!

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that can actually be found naturally in fruits and vegetables such as Raspberries, Strawberries and Cauliflowers and Mushrooms. While they do still contain Xylitol, the amounts are so small that there isn’t any danger towards your dog if they consume any of these fruits or veggies. However, in products that aren’t sweetened, like spreads, jams, biscuits and gums, Xylitol is used, because is a substitute to sugar.
For humans, Xylitol does not stimulate the release of any insulin, however for our furbaby pooches, it’s vastly different. The Xylitol is absorbed into the bloodstream far too quickly, meaning a potentially fatal amount of insulin is released from their pancreas.

This release of insulin can cause a rapid and sudden decrease in their levels of Hypoglycaemia (also known as their blood sugar). In some serious cases, it can take only 10 minutes for these effects to take place.

If your dog ever does consume Xylitol in something, it’s especially important to pay close attention to them, and watch out for any symptoms such as vomiting, sudden weakness, miscoordination and in worse cases, collapse, and seizures. If this occurs, seek help from an emergency vet immediately.

Thankfully for cats, it isn’t as dangerous, but still should be avoided at all costs. 🐱

A new study has uncovered the positive cognitive affect owning a dog has on owners. 🐕

A recent study published in popular journal PLOS One, discovered that owning a dog, and actively interacting with it, increases our cognitive ability, and helps to reduce the risk of Dementia!

The study also uncovered that people often feel a level of confidence and strength after walking their dogs! 💪

Goat's Cheese - one of those exotic fancy cheeses that nobody really thinks about, but it is actually incredibly good for pets. 🧀

Goat's cheese is actually one of the lowest in lactose cheeses that you can you have. As most pets are actually Lactose Intolerant, this is a great thing.

Goat's cheese is also very high in protein, which is obviously great with their muscle health and repair, and their overall health.
The Calcium levels in Goat's cheese are also great for their muscle and bone health.

Probiotics in Goat's cheese is also great for them too, as it helps to promote a healthy gut flora, which boosts their quality of digestion.
The probiotics, alongside other vitamins and minerals, keep their immune system strong as well!

It is also packed full of healthy fats, meaning they'll have the shiniest fur coat out of everybody else at the dog park!

It's important to remember however, that moderation is key, and to consult with your regular vet to ensure it is right for your individual pet.

Ticky tock everybody 😂

For many of you, you will already have in your head that swimming is a great form of exercise for dogs, but do you know why it is so important, especially for older dogs? 🐶

As dogs get older, their bones may weaken, exposing them to issues such as arthritis. However, swimming can help to decrease those chances. 🌊

Things such as hydrotherapy have been found to help dogs suffering from painful joints and arthritis.
The reason for this is partially because of the warm water, which can usually sit at 30 to 35 Celsius, reduces joint inflammation and can help to loosen all those stiff muscles. 🦴

Another reason why it is great is because it is a form of exercise that does not put any strain on their body. Because their entire body is supported by moving water, it means that their bones are not being shocked with sudden movement, such as when they get their zoomies on. It also is a great technique to support their healthy body weight.

How will you be incorporating water into your dog’s lifestyle? Comment below and make sure to like this post and Woof Woof Meow for more posts like this! 🐶🐶🐱

In case your heart hadn't been broken yet this morning, this post possibly will... sorry 💔

Every dog lover knows just how special their pets are to them. From the way they tilt their heads and wag their tails to the way they cover us in kisses, dogs are masters at expressing their emotions. However, there’s one display of affection that dogs apparently don’t particularly enjoy, and its hugs.

A recent study has shed some light on how dogs truly feel when we hug them. The head scientist, Elizabeth Ann Walsh from the Cork Pet Behaviour Centre in Ireland, analysed videos of people hugging, playing with, and petting their dogs to understand their reactions.

The findings are heartbreaking for dog huggers (see what I did there?). Most dogs in the videos responded to hugs by showing signs of extreme physical stress and anxiety. Specifically:

68% of dogs avoided eye contact and turned their heads.
44% licked their lips or nose, indicating stress.
43% panted, another sign of anxiety.
60% flattened their eyes while being hugged.
81% blinked rapidly, expressing high stress levels.
Even more concerning, in 68% of cases studied, dogs nipped or bit their owners as a last resort when they felt unsafe during a hug.

Now of course, we all know or own pets best, we will recognise how they feel, however what is important here is that we do actually pay attention to their body language when we do show them these signs of affection.

In just a delicious week for cats across Australia, today is also National Garfield The Cat Day!

Now obviously, it'd be rare to find a fat, orange cat who lives and breathes Lasagna, so let's just celebrate all the orange cats, whether they eat Lasagna, or not! 🐈

Imagine this... you're on your way to work, sitting in the peak-hour traffic, as Fabio beside you blasts his tunes, and somebody else tries to cut you off in a zipper merge. But you're relaxed!
Why? Because you're bringing your cat to work today, that is why!

So obviously, it only seems fitting to share your favourite pic of your cat, bonus points if they're at work! Comment below! 🐱
