Would you like to help us during Flying-fox Heat Stress Events?
Fauna Rescue Flying-fox Team are seeking expressions of interest for helpers to assist the team at Flying-fox Heat Stress Events (HSE) that may occur in the coming season. Not all the roles will require you to be vaccinated against rabies.
For insurance reasons, you must be a Fauna Rescue financial member to be able to participate.
If you wish to join Fauna Rescue, you can do so here: https://www.faunarescue.org.au/membership/
Once you have joined, the ticket fee will only be $5 for members.

It is ESSENTIAL that you are able to attend our HSE Training Workshop 10.00am-12.30pm on Saturday 26th October 2023 at Fauna Rescue Headquarters, 24 Gaelic Avenue, Holden Hill 5088, if you wish to be part of the Flying-fox Heat Stress Event Team.
There will be a tour of the Botanic Park Colony after lunch for those not familiar with where the bats reside and where Fauna Rescue set up their meeting point and triage area.
A Heat Stress Event can take place from November-March, when temperatures reach over 42 degrees, so you must be able to cope with those temperatures for periods of time. We get an indication by following weather forecasts when an event could happen. Often bats do not start to need help until the latter part of the day, so even if you work you could be of vital help from late afternoon into the evening or at weekends.
The course will cover:
A History of Heat Stress Events in Adelaide
The different roles of volunteers
Monitoring an HSE
Site set up
Role of the site Coordinator
Occupational Health & Safety
Stages of an HSE
When to assist the bats
Triage
Fauna Rescue HSE Policy
The non-vaccinated roles include:
Photographers to record the day's events (you do not need fancy professional equipment for this, good shots taken on a phone will be adequate), spotters of bats in difficulty, communications, respite and refreshment organisers, scribes for weights and measures of deceased bats.
We need to be open and not hide the fact that some Heat Stress Events can be extremely traumatic with many deaths (over 10,000 bats are estimated to have died in 2019/20 season's events), but if you feel you are able to participate, you will be invaluable in helping save many lives and Fauna Rescue and Adelaide's Flying-foxes are in need of your assistance.

Due to the high number and erratic departure of the flying-foxes during flyout, a flyout count will not be possible tonight. We will do a ground count to estimate the number of animals currently occupying the colony.

🦇 The flyout observed last night was quite spectacular so you can still come down just to watch and enjoy it 🦇

"Explore Bat World"is once again part of The Nature Festival.

Come and take a leisurely walk with Flying-fox rescuers and carers around Adelaide's only Flying-fox colony. You will learn about these incredible, fascinating and ecologically important animals. You will be right within their home, observing and learning. We are happy to answer all of your questions as we go.

As the sun begins to set, we will cross to the viewing area and set up our picnics to watch the absolutely mesmerizing nightly fly-out as the Flying-foxes head out to feed and perform their ecological duties of pollination and seed dispersal.

We encourage you to bring warm clothes, a picnic basket, blankets, chairs and anything that will help make you comfortable to just relax and enjoy the event.

🦇 Going batty for the Grey-headed flying fox on !

Lets talk about this fascinating animal, which calls Botanic Park/Tainmuntilla home.

🦇 The Grey-headed flying fox, unique to Australia, takes out the title of the largest bat in Australia, with a wing span that can reach up to 1m!

🦇 These creatures of the night enjoy eating a range of fruit, both native and introduced as well as indulging in sweet nectar and pollen.

🦇 Although they are often seen in large groups known as camps, the grey-headed flying fox population is sadly decreasing due to habitat destruction, leading to them being listed as a vulnerable species.

🦇 These bats play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy forest ecosystem by pollinating and spreading the seeds of numerous vital trees and plants.

You can learn more from Fauna Rescues education team, Talking Batty, during their Angels of the Night colony guided tours on Saturday 4 May. For more info and to book, head to https://www.botanicgardens.sa.gov.au/whats-on/bat-nights-grey-headed-flying-fox-colony-guided-tours-2

The Fauna Rescue of SA Flying-fox and Microbat Team is available anytime on 8486 1139 for any rescues within SA.

Our flying-fox team has spent the past five months rescuing and raising orphaned young. Now all our charges are in creche learning to be part of an extended social group in preparation for release. Our education team is now beginning its program for the next seven months. All events open to the public will be posted on the Bats of Adelaide City page.
The first being the Mt Baker Show March 23rd. If you are in Mt Barker next Saturday, pop in to visit the Fauna Rescue of SA Inc stand. Meet our rescuers Rex, Chris and Pauline. Meet our members Jane and Georgia. If you have thought about volunteering, come and chat to us. There will also be activities for the kids.

Our Grey-headed flying-fox friends are feeling the heat!

The flying-foxes that call Botanic Park home are a vulnerable species and protected by law. We prioritise the wellbeing of these important pollinators, particularly during times of extreme heat, when the flying-foxes can become stressed.

In the lead up to WOMADelaide, we have met with organisers to come up with solutions to help keep them cool and comfortable, making the event safe for them and festival goers.

We have sprinklers installed in the tree canopy which can cool the area by at least 3-4 degrees, and these will be on throughout the day. As the sprinklers are quite high up, they are unlikely to be felt on the ground by those at the festival. Exclusion zones will also be set up if needed, where the flying-foxes often gather, giving them the protection they need.

Our staff and flying-fox experts will be at the event, keeping a close watch on the animal’s welfare and their movement ready to take further action if the need arises.

If you see a distressed animal on the ground, please do not approach. There will be staff who are trained in handling the animals and have the correct equipment. You can call Fauna Rescue’s 24 hour helpline on 8486 1139.

In the unlikely event that you are touched by a bat, wash the area thoroughly and seek immediate assistance from a first aid member.

As well as Fauna Rescue on site at WOMADelaide, there will also be an information tent where you can find out more about this unique animal that calls Adelaide home.
