It has been amazing, and fun, and intense to watch this bond develop over the last 5 days. Jasper, a distinguished gentleman, who loves nothing more than snoozing away unbothered, and Inky, a juvenile rocket, who sways between roaching, 1am zoomies, and sticking her snoot into everybody's face. Looks like we are making it. 👏👏👏

The reason why I insist on taking every hound, arriving at Fellowship of the Greyhoundz, for a group walk before introducing them onto smial land. No matter how many times they have been with us.
Feeling safe is a basic need of us all. It is my job to make sure your hound not only is safe, but also feels safe.

I do have to start this post by saying that your dog doesn't need to meet other dogs.
I know that is controversial for some to hear but very few dogs are truly dog social....many are highly selective.
They may only like their own breed.
They may only like female dogs....small brown dogs...or curly coated dogs.
They have (and are ALLOWED) their own social preference....just as we have our own social preferences.

Or they may just dislike any other dog outside their/your family and friends.

Encouraging dogs to meet a dog walking down the street (even with the best of intentions) can cause some serious issues.

Reactivity and/or aggression.
Injury.
A lessening of the strong bond they may have with you as they can no longer trust your judgement.

So meeting dogs on a walk, just because there is another dog there is something I highly discourage.

However....
There are some circumstances where you may have to introduce dogs. So these are a few tips which have been written about before (separately) in graphics but I have squeezed them together for a clearer reference.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is only concentrating on their own dogs emotional state and not watching the rising stress in the other dog involved....
These cause those "Out of the blue" reactions....

They weren't out of the blue, they were just missed.

🔵Micro meetings are essential.
🔵Parallel walks are a must.
🔵Avoid face to face.
🔵Keep your voices light and happy.
🔵DON'T make a dog sit or lie down.
🔵Tension creates more tension so keep those leads loose.
🔵NEUTRAL territory....not your yard, your house or even your immediate area around your house....go somewhere else.

Biggest tip though (as mentioned) watch the body language of both dogs.....IGNORE the tail wags and watch the whole body and all the little tell tale signs given.

If it doesn't feel right...it likely isn't.
Trust your own intuition.

ALWAYS advocate for your own dog no matter how "friendly" you are told the other dog is.

Hi there, I am Freckles. I am a very anxious girl. I didn't have a good life. Actually, it was a s#$%te life, but then my mum rescued me. She is the best. She patiently stood by me for 6 months until I was ready to walk up the road. I still don't like going into the car, but she tricked me and now I am here in smial land. I am ok. My name used to be Dusty, and so was my life. They also called me Elite Obama, but I never understood that. Now I am called Kodjo, because I am a boy and I was born on a Monday. I had to run around tracks, got stuffed in boxes, poked and handled by so many people, that I still go into survival mode today. I am a sensitive boy, inside and out. My body was not mine to decide over. My legs hurt because I have elongated tendons. When I was 8, my butt started to hurt because I boiled my beautiful behind going at top speeds every week for one year. Mum gets really angry thinking about it, which is why she rarely talks about it. She prefers to dish out cuddles to all of us. I am 10 now, and life is good. Meds help with the arthritis. Soft grounds help with my flat feet, and just look at my sis. Oh dear, I have loved her since I first laid eyes on her. She comes and rests her head on me or snuggles up when I snooze. Lantern Festival. The community spirit here is strong. Kids make their own lantern in kindergartens, schools or public places such as community houses and the library. Adults group together and create simple or amazing artistic lanterns. Some lanterns come back year after year. We are so lucky to be part of this community.
