Do you know the difference between an over bite and an over jet? 🤓

Over bite:
🦷 The incisors do NOT meet/occlude at all; the upper incisors are completely rostral/forward of the lowers.

Over jet:
🦷 The incisors DO meet/occlude but don’t align as they should with the upper incisors sitting rostral/forward of where they should.

What problems arise with these types of mouths?

🤓Lack of occlusion means lack of normal tooth wear so overgrowths occur as the teeth continue to erupt.

Over bite:
🦷 All incisors need to be kept in check with regular floating as they are not naturally wearing at all.
🦷 The lower incisors can cause damage to the hard palate in some cases.

Over jet:
🦷Often, a labial rim overgrowth forms on the upper incisors and a steep incisor table angle can develop as a result.

🪥 Sadly, the malocclusions don’t normally stop at the incisors. The upper cheek teeth usually sit slightly rostral to the lower cheek teeth and so hooks and ramps of the upper 6’s and lower 11’s are also common issues that need to be kept at bay.

😣These malocclusions hinder the natural rostral/caudal (forward and backward) movement of the mandible (lower jaw) and can create pain and tension in the TMJ and head and neck musculature.

🦜🦷These horses will usually benefit from more frequent dental treatments at 6 monthly intervals🦷🦜

This 208 came out of a very sweet, 35yr old (yes, 35!) that I was asked to look at over the weekend. The tooth was very mobile and had very little attachment remaining. It only took a wriggle in my fingers for it to come away.

This mare was in fantastic condition all thanks to her caring owner who has had her since she was a little bubba! She will certainly be much happier without this tooth squeaking around in there while she’s eating though.

Someone’s been skipping brushing and flossing!

This old guy was referred on for investigation of possible EOTRH but not before I got my hands on that tartar 😯🤗 the massive build up contained a grass bolus at the core! Super satisfying to remove 😏
