Someone’s been skipping brushing and flossing!

This old guy was referred on for investigation of possible EOTRH but not before I got my hands on that tartar 😯🤗 the massive build up contained a grass bolus at the core! Super satisfying to remove 😏

A good example of how dental balance (or imbalance) can affect the entire horse. This shows the importance of checking the relationship between occlusion of the cheek teeth AND the incisors to achieve dental equilibration for our horses comfort and function.

It’s been a little quiet here lately but I am officially back in full swing after a bit of a forced break from a very minor (but very annoying) injury. Turns out a broken finger is just annoying enough to render me a fairly useless dental tech 🤦🏼‍♀️

I currently have SATURDAY APPOINTMENTS available 🦷🐴 as well as the occasional afternoon/Sunday appointment.

Please get in contact to book in your horse or pony 😃

A little post-ride carrot stretch 🥕

The benefits of stretching our horses include:
- Improved range of motion ✅
- Improved circulation ✅
- Reduced muscle tension and fatigue ✅
- Improved general health of the muscles ✅
- Reduced risk of injury ✅

Targeted stretches can also help to rehabilitate injuries and/or weaknesses in our horses.
I try to do stretches with my horse most days. A few extra minutes to the end of our rides/exercise sessions is quite easy to commit to, to reap the huge benefits.

Who else is an avid stretcher?
What are some of your favourite stretches to do with your horses?

A couple of very loose cheek teeth extracted from a dear, old pony over the weekend.

The red arrows are pointing to a pulp opening on the occlusal surface (chewing surface) and the resulting tract that opened through to the apical aspect (root tip) of the tooth. You can also see the significant changes between the tooth roots as compared to the other due to the remodelling caused by the infection.

Who else got out and about with their beautiful horses this weekend?
I headed out to our local dressage day with my horse, Beau.

I’d love to see pictures of what you and your horses got up to over the weekend. Share in the comments!

“He’s getting a bit long in the tooth” 👴🏼👵🏼

Contrary to what many believe, horses teeth don’t grow, they erupt.
So when noticing a horse is ‘long in the tooth’ it is simply a result of eruption without equal wear.

This typically comes from inconsistent angles and wear patterns that can come from restricted TMJ movement, irregular conformation, trauma or a number of other irregularities that ends in malocclusions throughout the entire mouth.

Therefore, balancing of the horses incisors and molar arcades is imperative to the horses over all health, for comfort during performance, longevity, functionality to get full nutritional benefit from feed and the ability to maintain and build muscle efficiently.

Just a friendly reminder to have your young horses seen to for dentals every 6months.

Why?
Because there are lots of changes happening in our horses mouths up until the age of 5! If they are seen to 6 monthly, we can keep on top of any potential malocclusions that may arise as adult teeth are erupting and coming into wear or occlusion and make sure everything is tracking as it should (and of course keep those nasty sharp enamel points at bay).

So what exactly is going on in there?

The molars (the last 3 cheek teeth) are erupting between the ages of 1 and 3, with the last cheek teeth not in full wear until around the age of 4.

Starting at 2.5yrs old, our horses will start to shed their deciduous teeth (milk teeth/caps).

The deciduous premolars (the first three cheek teeth) should shed at 6 monthly intervals, the first lot at 2.5yrs old, the next at 3yrs old and the last of them being shed at 3.5yrs old and in full wear at 4yr old.

The deciduous incisors should shed at yearly intervals; the centrals at 2.5yr old, the intermediates at 3.5yr old and the corners at 4.5yr old and all in full wear by 5yr old.

Our male horses (and some mares) will have the canines erupting between 4.5-5.5yr old.

Wolf teeth can erupt as early as 6 months of age and can be extracted during their first dental to prevent any future bitting issues.

Let’s keep these guys happy and free of any oral discomfort especially when it comes to starting them, introducing a bit and asking them to work. If you want the best start in your young horse’s education, then ensure their dental care is up to date!

*Pictured is a 608 (a deciduous premolar) and a 502 (a deciduous intermediate incisor) that I removed from an almost 4.5yr old. These should’ve been shed at 3.5yrs old. That’s almost a year that these caps were sitting there causing this young horse grief!*

I thoroughly enjoyed my time showing the group the horses’ teeth and explaining a little about what I do and why. It was excellent to meet such a great bunch of people and some lovely horses 🥰🦷🐴 Thanks guys!
