Honey does not go bad. In fact, it's recognized as the only food that doesn't spoil. It will, however, crystallize (becoming thick and cloudy) over time. If this happens, just remove the lid from the jar, place it in a pan of water, and warm it over low heat until the honey returns to its original consistency.

Why do we love beekeeping?

1. Connection to nature: Beekeeping provides an opportunity to connect with nature and the environment. As a beekeeper, you work with bees, which are important pollinators that play a critical role in maintaining ecosystems and biodiversity.
2. Sustainable food production: Beekeeping contributes to sustainable food production. Honeybees are responsible for pollinating many crops, and beekeepers can also harvest honey and beeswax, which are natural and renewable resources.
3. Educational opportunities: Beekeeping can be a rewarding educational experience. As a beekeeper, you can learn about bees' behavior, biology, and life cycles. Additionally, you can share your knowledge and experience with others, including students, friends, and family.
4. Community involvement: Beekeeping can be a great way to get involved in the local community. Beekeepers can participate in local farmer's markets, educate the public about the importance of bees, and collaborate with other beekeepers.
5. Enjoyment: Beekeeping can be a fulfilling hobby. It can be an enjoyable experience to watch the bees work and thrive, and to harvest honey and beeswax. The satisfaction of knowing that you are contributing to the environment and to sustainable food production can also be very rewarding.

I’ve had a few friends of Bardon Bees ask “what does a Queen bee actually do?”

A quality queen honeybee needs to lay the right amount of brood at the right time of year, all in a consistent and tight brood pattern.

Bees use the available cells across frames in a reasonably predictable pattern.

They will use some cells to store pollen or honey. Others cells will be created for worker, drone or queen cells, which are collectively called the brood nest.

The brood nest can be considered a three-dimensional shape, spread across the multiple frames in the box. Think of it as a football "embedded" within the 3-dimensional space of the 10 frames. Each frame is like a "slice" of that football, with the tallest part of the ball towards the center frames.

Spring has arrived at Bardon Bees and the hives are buzzing!

We’ve split a hive last week to add to our collection and to avoid a swarm. They girls did so well through the Queensland winter and plenty of wet weather. Honey 🍯 production is excellent. We shall harvest again early October.

Winter check focus….

Our check today was focused on 3 things, clearing the entrance of dead bees, replacing any wet, moldy moisture-wicking material and replacing oils and pest bait (beetles and ants).
While the weather is perfect for quick checks it is not warm enough to expose frames by pulling them out or leaving the cover off for too long. It is important when it's cold outside that you work quickly, shoot for no more than 3 minutes with the lid off. No sign of varroa destructor thankfully. We have Biosecurity registration and will continue to perform regular checks throughout winter.

Honeys go really well with aged, nutty cheeses like a Parmigiano-Reggiano, a tangy cheddar, or my favourite, gruyère. Our clover honey or pohutukawa honey also works beautifully with fresh creamy cheeses like ricotta, goat cheese, or feta. ❤️ 🍯

Worker bees are female but are not capable of reproducing. They do all the work in the hive, and they control most of what goes on inside. Their jobs include housekeeping, feeding the queen, drones and larvae, collecting the pollen and nectar, and making the wax. This little one is taking a breather.
