Lin is our next Happy Paws Hero we are introducing. Lin has been part of our walking team for quite a while now providing regular services to clients who are with us multiple days a week. This has enabled Lin to create great bonds with their regular dogs and ensures that even though they are walking multiple days, the places they visit are different. Lin takes the most incredible photos of our dogs and really has a natural talent in photography and all things creative. Although soft spoken, Lin is a dynamic personality who's eye for details is much appreciated in a busy and bustling team.

Today our team completed the PetTech PetSaver First Aid and CPR course thanks to . We covered the most common types of emergencies we would face in a day care setting and practiced our skills on stuffed doggies. Casper the life form dog enabled staff to feel for the pulse of a dog. Our facility is now stocked with a pet first aid kit (our walking team still have their smaller kits with them in the work boxes). From seizures, to insect bites, choking and CPR we are now qualified to be first responders in the unlikely event a dog in our care requires it.

By law, we are required to have an agreement with a vet clinic and we’ve partnered with Advance VetCare Flemington who we can rush dogs to after we administer the first aid.

Did you know there are no laws requiring us to be certified in pet first aid or CPR? Instead, our commitment to providing the highest level of care and training prompted us to arrange this for staff.

Continuing to introduce our Happy Paws Heroes. Here's Frin, our Day Care Manager. In addition to working in the Day Care, Frin also takes a number of solo walks for our clients. He's built great relationships with the dogs he regularly walks and their humans, providing high level services tailored to meet the needs of the individual distinct personalities of the dogs he's paired with.

Elliot here….. we are being asked a lot when we are opening to the public. And the truth is, I don’t know.

I’ve made a commitment to my staff that we will only open once everyone is ready. If you haven’t checked out our company values, please go do so. I have built an accessible workplace that prioritises opportunities for people who identify as living with a disability, have been out of work for a while, or have other barriers to the workplace.

On top of that I am committed to having highly trained staff. I’ve seen facilities staffed by people with limited training and experience, and as a trainer I get called out to work with dogs who have been asked to leave dog day care places. When I review the notes from those facilities I often spot the issue months before the facility does. And that lack of knowledge means things escalate far further than I want them to in my facility.

I want to do things differently and better. I want each dog to experience day care positively and we’ve got some strategies for keeping the most common problems at bay long before they get to excluding dogs. That’s not to say we won’t exclude if necessary and facilities that do exclude dogs are generally good facilities.

My team are amazing! I can’t wait to be able to introduce them all to you. But we are still training. When do I hope we can open? By the end of August. But, my commitment is to my staff and the safety of my facility. When each of the Happy Paws Heroes looks at me and says “I’m ready”, then we will open our doors.

We are looking more and more like a day care with our fencing finished and a LOT of cleaning done this weekend.

This week our team continue their training, we’ve completed a week of learning new client systems, dog behaviour, traffic light play signals, and customer service skills.

This week we will continue learning things like enrichment, how to safely intervene in dog play if needed, identifying health issues, loading more current clients into our new CRM (which pairs with an amazing pet parent app), dealing with resource guarding safely and have our first batch of dogs on site.

We still have a tonne of work to do. This week CCTV, installation of our reception, final front gates and fencing, deep clean, and a few more deliveries and of course more toys (never enough toys).

Our family, friends and current clients launch party this next weekend and although there’s still a lot to do, the finish line is within sight and with a few crossed fingers it’s all going to come together in time.

Like the idea of your dog trying dog day care, but unsure what would happen if they find it a bit overwhelming?

Don’t worry. We’ve thought of that. We’ve converted 2 upstairs offices into chill out zones for dog who might need a little quiet private space.

These will also serve the function of isolation rooms should we have a sick dog.

With a super comfy crate with thick luscious bedding and blankets, a few soft toys for quiet play, these rooms will help ensure that dogs transitioning into the hustle and bustle of a vibrant busy day care have the space and time they need if it’s all a bit much.

We will have a further space in our reception area for any dog who needs some quiet time but might not like being alone. They can curl up at our feet while we work out the front away from the busy pens.

In bringing our day care to life, we’ve committed to going above and beyond the standards required of us, exceeding the standards of the Code of Practice and thinking through our design for the benefit and enjoyment of all dogs who might pop into our premises.

Here’s a sneak peak at some of our custom made play equipment for the doggy day care!!!! We are beyond excited at the progress we are making with transforming the old janky warehouse into the day care of our dreams.

Tell us what you think your dog would enjoy playing on? The seesaw, the agility frames or the tunnels???

Monday was a mixed bag with some dogs out beating the rain, cancelling others, indoor play for some, and a shorter walk for others. We try our best to accomodate our clients needs when the weather gets in the way. We’re able to check in on clients who don’t want their dogs left home alone all day, and will try to get walks done before bad weather sets in. Some times cancelling is our only option though and we don’t like imagining the dogs waiting for us patiently when we don’t arrive. That makes us 😔.

In addition to our new Happy Paws Heroes we’ve got some new pups to introduce.

Jalebi has come all the way from India to start her new life here and is starting off getting to know Elliot with the plan being she’ll do weekly excursions. Jalebi was a street dog in India, however based on the way she crosses her legs, we think she knew she was destined for the life of luxury. She adopted her humans and made it clear she was their dog. She’s hit the jackpot with them in many ways, especially the effort (and time) they’ve committed to bringing her all the way to Australia (with some extended time in NZ along the way). Jalebi is easily won over with treats and so has decided Elliot is a pretty decent guy to go on walks with.

Dougal is our other new face. Full of that puppy energy and teenage disobedience Dougal had come for some training working on his loose leash walking, resetting his recall, and working on his behaviour around other dogs and trains!!! Dougal did amazing in his first session today and we will post about that later.

Please give a big old face lick to Jalebi and Dougal! Welcome to Happy Paws Waggy Tails we look forward to adventures with you both.

Again we’ve been slack posting to social media. We will blame the transformation of the Flemington daycare property taking up a load of our time. Some of our beautiful dogs from the end of last week and the start of this week. Today was a washout though with most appointments being cancelled due to the massive amount of rain.

Our new floor compared to the old dangerous, janky mess!!!!!!! We’ve invested heavily into turning this place into the best doggy day care EVER. Our new flooring is almost ready, we just have to stay off of it for the next few days while it cures. The place has been levelled, a ramp installed rather than the old drop off from front to back room, drains cleaned and levelled off, and all joins recaulked. Best news is it’s anti slip which will lessen the risk of getting injuries sustained through fast running play.

Once the floor is ready we can get the fences in, install reception, a new hydrobath, and wait for some imported doggy play equipment. Then we just add dogs.

We appreciate the interest of securing a spot at our day care. We will soon announce an EOI that potential new clients can fill out to get on our wait list. For our current clients, you’ll have priority access so stay tuned for those exciting updates.

Frin, Lin, and Leaf headed out in the beautiful sunshine with Archie, June, Ollie, Rupey, Dibgy, Raff and Shadow for loads of walking and off leash fun. Archie is loving having different staff walk him who all bring different toys for him to play with, he’s got mad and gets super excited to see what’s on offer for his sessions. Raff is looking super stylish with his winter outfit.

Manic Monday!!!!
Started early with letting contractors in at the Flemington day care to start the massive floor works.

Levi was busy practicing catching sky food, Delta was very happy to see her mate Ollie at the dog park for some good running together, Rusty found the motherload of sticks, Henry is still recovering from surgery so no balls for him saw him improvise with a stick, and Ms Lola briefly shared her ball with a friendly Groodle before playing keeps-off with it. Busy Monday to start the week, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Some of our Wednesday and Thursday crew out and about with Frin, Elliot, Lin and Leaf.

Can you believe we are taking close to 50 dogs per week out for adventures of all sorts? Many of our clients engage our services multiple times per week and we have got a good rhythm going now where our dogs are paired with the same Walker or walkers each week so we can really get to know them well. We pride ourselves on the genuine connections we make with the dogs in our care and their humans.

Just a few of our happy faces for the start of the week. Gus had a go at the flirt pole and it was love at first sight. Hydrobath for Indii and Mattie to leave them refreshed and feeling their best. Deltas happy place is the park with a chewy tennis ball. Ziggy and Wolfie are showing off their winter warmers. Levi had a trip to the park with some agility practise. And Shadow is living his best life off lead at the local park.

Elliot got to hang out with a pure Dingo at school. Jarrah the dingo is giving Elliot a good sniff over in the video. Jarrah is a little wary of men in hats and shortly after gave Elliot a good “chuff” which is dingo speak for “whoa give me space”.

Dingoes are an apex predator and are not trainable so we won’t be swapping from dog trainer to dingo trainer anytime soon. But we did enjoy meeting Jarrah and learning about him and his dingo mates from the wildlife handler.

Lola looks smug and happy after convincing Elliot that she’s never fed, gets no affection, and never leaves the house. As such she needs extra treats and at least a full 5 minutes of uninterrupted pats and belly rubs after her walk. Even though we know the truth of how very well she is fed, walked, loved and cared for each week we play along with her version of the story!

She’s only a little dog but is full of personality, knows what she wants and more importantly how to make Elliot give her just that.

The toy turtle has been THE greatest purchase we ever made for the work toy boxes. Mr Turtle has made a positive impression on every dog and Archie was no exception. He was absolutely obsessed with it and played hard! What a gorgeous happy face.

We wish that the turtles were still available to purchase as we would buy them all!!!! Sadly, only dogs paired with Leaf get to enjoy the turtles magnificent chewy and bouncy glory these days.

Gus’s human often jokes that the photos we take of him are perfect for his tinder profile, so we decided to make that a reality. Gus is a cheeky boy with handsome looks and will certainly keep you on your toes. Gus is not for the faint of heart, but once you’ve won him over, you’ve got a friend for life. Gus maybe a little stand off ish with dogs, but he has big dog energy, and loves to go exploring.
