A few tips to prevent colic:

Consistent Feeding Routine:
Maintain a consistent feeding schedule for your horse. Changes in diet or feeding times should be gradual to allow the digestive system to adapt. When making changes to your horse’s diet, do so over 14 days. Abrupt changes feed or hay are one of the most common reasons horses develop colic.

Quality Forage:
Provide high-quality forage, such as good quality hay or pasture. Ensure that hay is free from mold, dust, and contaminants, and consider feeding multiple small meals throughout the day.

Hydration:
Ensure your horse has access to clean, fresh water at all times. Proper hydration is crucial for preventing impaction colic and supporting overall digestive health.

Regular Dental Care:
Schedule regular dental check-ups to ensure your horse’s teeth are in good condition. Proper dental care promotes effective chewing, aiding in the digestion of forage.

Parasite Control:
Implement a diagnostic deworming program based on f***l egg counts and veterinarian recommendations. Effective parasite control helps prevent internal parasites from causing colic.

Reduce sand intake:
Avoid feeding hay directly off the ground and avoid grazing sparse pastures. Abdominal radiographs can be performed on-property and can determine how much sand your horse has accumulated.

Minimize Stress:
Minimize stressors in your horse’s environment. Changes in routine, transportation, or social dynamics can contribute to colic.

Educate Yourself:
Stay informed about colic symptoms. Knowing what’s normal for your horse and recognising the signs of colic is important. Don’t wait and see, seeking prompt veterinary attention can make a significant difference in the outcome.

Need to do a blood transfusion on a patient? For cross matching of donor and recipient prior to a transfusion, from the recipient and the donor/s collect 2ml of blood into an EDTA tube and 2ml into a plain serum tube. Minimise haemolysis during the sample collection as this can invalidate results, and refrigerate the samples until transport to the laboratory.
