Ingredients such as BHA/BHT, Animal by-products (Proven to be roadkill and other euthanised dogs and cats), Propylene Glycol, Gycerine, Corn, Wheat, Soy, Gluten and Powdered Cellulose should be avoided when purchasing any food product for your fur baby including dental chews. These preservatives and cheap fillers added to your dog and cats food can lead to serious health issues such as hormone imbalances, behavioural changes, pancreatic disease, liver cancer and allergies.

All most every dental chew on the market is filled with carbohydrates as they are cheap fillers. Marketing will tell you they are natural and can be used daily. However, these carbohydrates sit in our dogs mouth, feed bacteria and contribute to plaque build up and gum disease. This is due to dogs not producing the enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates, salivary amylase.

It’s also important you are aware this relates to Dental Kibble.

Dental Chews for dogs = Potato chips for us

For best dental health:

1. Feed a raw balanced diet as this contains natural enzymes that help resist bacterial plaque in dogs and cats as this is their species appropriate diet.
2. Offer recreational raw meaty bones. Not only do they provide gnawing which cleans their teeth but they are a great way to exercise your dogs jaw and provide mental stimulation as they chew. (A blog will be posted in regards to feeding bones and types of bones in the near future. )
3. Brush their teeth regularly with natural dog friendly toothpaste

Understanding Omega 3’s

Omega 3’s are fatty acids found in most dog and cat food. A healthy ratio of omega 3’s to omega 6’s (5:1 ration, highest being omega 3) will reduce inflammation in the body, improve brain function, can help treat kidney disease and help treat arthritic pain. The opposite ration of omega 3’s to 6’s cause all of these problems particularly arthritic pain as the inflammatory response in the body kicks itself into over drive, further causing allergies.

It is important for you to be aware in almost all commercial food the omega 6 is higher than omega 3’s. This is one reason why species appropriate diets are highly recommended as it is typically easier to ensure omega 3’s and 6’s are at the recommended balanced ratio. This is generally due to the lack of processing and heating of ingredients.

A great source of Omega 3’s are whole wild caught sardines from your local fish market. These make a great snack or meal topper a few times a week.

We acknowledge some fur parents can’t feed raw or only want to feed dry. Therefore, we want to provide you the perfect resource for storing dry food safely.

Dry food must be stored in the fridge or freezer in an air tight container. This helps prevent any more bacteria growth. Dry foods should only last 14-21 days otherwise it goes rancid meaning most of the ingredients like omegas 3 actually become practically non existent especially after the heating processes while being made. Buy small bags of food at a time to prevent the food going rancid.

I always grew up being told dogs are colorblind and can only see shades of black and grey.
However, like us, your canine can see colours… just not as many as we see. The human retina contains three types of colour-detecting cells whereas dogs have two. An example of this is the colour red to a person with normal vision, would seem dark brown to dogs.

Our feline friends should spend about 30-40% of their day grooming themselves. The majority of the 60-70% remaining is spent sleeping. It’s extremely common for fur parents to not realise their kitty is over grooming until they notice other visual signs like hair loss, bald spots etc. Some cats groom excessively when alone which makes it harder to pick up on this behaviour before other visuals like hair loss occur.

Here are some of the main causes for over grooming in our feline friends :

1. Stress, anxiety
2. Boredom
3. Fleas and parasites
4. Food intolerances
5. Allergies or reactions to products and environmental allergens such as cleaning products, candles, dust or mould.
6. Medical issues such as cystitis and hyperthyroidism

If your kitty is grooming excessively please consult your vet to ensure there is no medical issue being left untreated. If this is a behavioural issue I would recommend prey playing, hunt feeds, harnessed walks and other activities to use pent up energy.

Our mission is to educate and inspire you to provide an environment that’s enriched and species appropriate.

Why? You see, the difference between thriving and surviving is so detrimental for our animals. We control every aspect of their environment, however we provide little to no necessities that are crucial for them.

The current standard of animal care is so appalling, and has so much room for improvement but society isn’t willing to change - because we are taught to think that change is scary.

At naturally paws we are shaping the new standard of animal care because change isn’t scary- change is: surviving to thriving.

Providing adequate enrichment means your animal is able to flourish within their controlled environment. The development of health and behavioural issues are increased when deprived from from appropriate outlets like enrichment.

Different types of enrichment include nutrition, physical, elimination, social and behavioural -just to name a few. Further information for how you can provide adequate enrichment for your animal will be uploaded under a blog in the near future.
