In humans, the difference between IBD and IBS is the presence of microscopic inflammation on biopsies. The WSAVA Guidelines' require 5 Criteria to make a diagnosis of IBD. But do we see IBS? Traditionally, if we see chronic waxing and waning GIT signs clinically, but there is no inflammation histologically, we would have called that small intestinal bacterial overgrowth... but now we see dysbiosis, antibiotic responsive diarrhoea, or many other names… looking forward to seeing a way to classify and diagnose these microbiome associated GIT disorders!
