Today marks four years since we lost our precious boy, my beautiful Distinguished Gentleman, my Little Biggie, Ashy. For the past four years, I haven’t really been able to talk about it much, but I feel compelled to spread the word to raise awareness and, hopefully, save a life.

Ashy, like all our other cats, was a rescue. He was FIV positive and had a few issues here and there, but nothing we thought too concerning—until that day four years ago. We took him to the vet for what should have been a routine and relatively safe procedure under general anesthesia. I still remember the unsettling feeling in my gut when we dropped him off, the vet reassuring us, "Don’t worry, he will be fine!" I remember him looking at me for the last time as they took him inside… Then, overwhelmed by a nagging feeling, I called the vet and asked, "How is he?" to which she replied, "He is not good, I’m afraid. His heart is failing. We are breathing for him." I remember jumping in the car and driving as fast as I could. Then another phone call: He was gone.

Ashy passed away under general anesthesia from an undiagnosed and undetected heart disease called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), quite common in cats yet manageable if detected early. Unfortunately, especially in cats, this condition often doesn’t show symptoms until it's too late. Ashy had no heart murmur, no cough, no changes in regular blood tests that would indicate something was wrong. We missed it. I didn’t know better then, but I do now: a simple heart ultrasound prior to the procedure could have saved him. It might not have saved him from this disease, but it could have prevented his death that day four years ago.

Why am I writing this today? Because I want to raise awareness about this silent killer. I believe pet parents should be given a choice. Ideally, I would like to see a heart ultrasound become an optional part of a standard pre-anesthetic protocol, just like a blood test. Yes, some owners might refuse due to the cost, but many would not. Plus, more and more pet parents these days have pet insurance which could cover the cost. Regardless, it should be a choice that we are aware of. If only I had been given this option back then, maybe my boy would still be alive.

I am not blaming anyone; the vet didn’t know either, and losing a patient like this is undoubtedly traumatic. And yes, it is still incredibly difficult for me to talk about this. But if sharing this story can prevent even one fur family from enduring the trauma and years of anxiety, pain, guilt, and "what if" questions that I have gone through, then telling Ashy’s story is worth it.

I love you forever, my Ashy-Meowashy. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about you.

Yesterday we lost an integral part of our family - our beautiful girl, our pink flower 🌸, our gentle monster, our sweetest spice, our baby girl - our Nala 💔

My sweet sweet baby...Сясечка... I know you're at peace and free from this horrible illness that took you from us in a blink of an eye - 11 days...
You left us 13 days after we lost our Zorro whom you loved so much (even though you tried to be so discrete about it 😉)...
I know you're together now and Zorro, Queenie, Ashy and Murichka are showing you the ropes around that beautiful place called Rainbow Bridge 🌈 Knowing this makes me feel at peace...

You left this world just like we always wanted it for you - peacefully, surrounded by love and light 🤍 Your daddy took you on a tour around your favourite spots in the house and then you just peacefully went to sleep on your favourite spot on a fluffy rug by the window, with our arms wrapped around you and kisses showering your little head and us telling you how much we love you and always will 💞

I miss you so much, my Сюсю. I miss your gentlest kisses and headbuts, your awkward zoomies up and down the stairs, rubbing your soft belly, looking into your beautiful blue eyes and kissing your pink little nose, I miss you curling up next to me every night and falling asleep tacking your little paws into my arms, I miss you digging up my coffee because you didn't like the smell of it... I miss everything about you. The house and our lives are no longer the same without you... 💔

But I promise you, we will continue living and finding joy in small things - just like you taught us to. And I promise you that one day, when our time here comes to an end, I will be running over that Rainbow Bridge 🌈 to meet you and all our other angels and to shower you all with kisses again... The day when our whole family will reunite again, this time to be together forever 💞 Until then, please take care of each other and don't forget to send us little signs every now and then - we really need those 🙏

4 years ago on this day at 1:49pm a part of my heart stopped as I said final goodbye to my beautiful girl, my Queenie. Ironically, it was the day after Queen's birthday.
It's been 4 long years without you, my girl, but I keep my promise and do everything to keep your memory alive. You live in everything in everything I do because, if it wasn't for you, my life would have probably taken a completely different path. You live in every cat that I saved and gave home to after you. You live in every piece that I make under our brand - Queenie's Pawprints - because these are the pawprints you left on my heart and on this earth. You made me who I am today and I am so grateful for having had you in my life, even though our time together wasn't nearly enough...

I love you forever, my beautiful girl 💞 1458 days closer to the day when I see you again 🌈🐾💞
