Please stop and check if you hit an animal or you see one that’s just been hit.
There may be a precious life inside a pouch desperate for help. Then call your wildlife group or shelter, please.

Unfortunately, due to many of my photos being stolen I’m not going to post any more photos until this has resolved.
So sorry!

This is one of our released wombats home for a quick visit and a bite to eat.

Why do we raise baby wombats in two’s or three’s?

Baby wombats stay with their Mothers for about 18 months, 6 of those months, they are tucked securely in her backwards facing pouch. When they emerge from the pouch, at around 6 months of age, they stay close to their Mothers side.
All the while learning about survival in the wild.

Deep inside the safety of the burrow, Mum will rest, while her joey tends to climb all over her and jump around.
No wonder she needs to sleep so much!!

Having a buddy to cuddle up with when baby wombats are raised in care, makes all the difference. They not only have each other for company but also for play, warmth and comfort and to learn from each other about being a wombat.

Today’s baby wombat facts:
Very young, furless ”pinky” wombats are very fragile and need very specialised care. They require a formula designed just for them, containing colostrum to develop their immunity. The teats used to feed these tiny babies have been designed for the shape of their mouths, to enable them to suck and swallow.
Just like very premature human babies, their skin also needs to be cared for and they have very specific temperature needs. These tiny babies are unable to control their body temperature until they develop fur.

N.b: If you happen to find a baby wombat, please phone your local wildlife group or the nearest vet.

Today’s Wonderful Wombat Facts:
Orphaned baby wombats are best raised together in pairs or more. They are usually with their Mums all of the time, in her pouch, by her side or deep inside the safety of a burrow.
Baby wombats love to play, and jump around and generally have lots of fun!
Raising them in pairs or more ensures they always have company while learning all about being a wombat!
After all…one day they will be going back to the bush to be wild wombats just the way they are meant to be 🥰
