Week 16: Signs of an overdue saddle fit

There are a few clear indicators that you as riders can keep an eye out for when monitoring when your horse is due for a saddle fit check.

1. White hairs or rubs: the development of white hairs or rubs under where the saddle sit is a clear sign there is a saddle fit issue.

2. Behavioural changes: if your horse is displaying signs of discomfort, resistance, reluctance to move forward or bucking this can be due to a poor saddle fit.

3. Unusual movement of the saddle: is your saddle sliding forwards, backwards or sidewards when you ride? Do you notice the saddle looks unbalanced when you girth it up - sitting off to one side or moving up and down when you lunge?

4. Horse weight change: if your horse has lost or gained weight it is more than likely their saddle will no longer be fitting correctly! This is particularly notable at the start of winter when the cooler autumn weather has resulted in weight loss or the start of summer/end of spring when the fresh grass has contributed to weight gain.

I recommend 3 monthly saddle fits for horses coming back into work after a spell, young horses that are changing shape or performance horses and 6 monthly saddle fits for all other ridden horses. Catching a poor saddle fit early is the key in preventing long term soreness and issues in your horses back.

Week 15: What type of stirrup irons should I use?

Gosh I love the equine industry! We are seeing so many new and innovative products be released nowadays that help improve the rider experience and performance... So why not take advantage and use them?!

One example of this is stirrup irons. Now... I am not saying there is anything wrong with your traditional Fillis style stainless steel stirrup irons, as long as they are the correct size for your boot to ensure it can easily come free in the event of a fall (4.75" is my generally recommended size for an adult). However with so many more options available today, it would be a shame not to consider these if you are looking at decking out a new saddle with some new mounts, or updating your tired existing stirrups.

Here is my FAQ in relation to stirrup irons with some helpful hints to point you all in the right direction when selecting your new stirrup irons.

Q. I'm concerned about my safety in the stirrups, but hate the old peacock/rubber band safety stirrups.
A. There are so many stylish safety stirrups available nowadays for both dressage and jumping use! Check these out:

A. Get yourself a set of stirrups with an offset eye (the part where the stirrup leather threads through). This will enable the stsirrup to naturally hang at a right angle to your saddle and make recovery quick and easy if you do lose a stirrup:

Week 14: Leather verse synthetic saddle? The when’s and why’s I would recommend a synthetic saddle over a leather saddle.

Today there are several options for materials from which saddles can be constructed, but they come down to two main groups: synthetic and leather.

Now, people often fall into a group that either loves synthetic saddles for their ease of care, or dislikes them; viewing them as the lesser option to their superior leather versions. Now… I ask you to keep an open mind 😋. Synthetic saddles are not only easy to clean and lower maintenance in maintenance, but they are a fantastic option for rainy day riding and beach riding because it doesn’t matter if the saddle gets wet! Through having a synthetic saddle you are able to keep your nice leather saddle in excellent condition and this will help increase the lifespan of your lovely leather gear.

Furthermore the quality of materials in synthetic saddles nowadays, such as your Wintec saddles, are superior in their own right and extremely hard wearing! They are more than nice enough to use in competition, at Pony Club and realistically... people often can't tell the difference until they touch them!

Week 13: Adjustable Y-Girthing system

Those of you who own Bates or Wintec saddles may or may not be aware of their adjustable ‘Y-girthing system’. This innovative system allows for 3 anchor points for your girth straps to the saddle tree: the front, middle and rear of your saddle. This allows for more even pressure distribution from the pull of the girth over the length of the saddle panels. This feature is particularly handy for those harder to fit horses or rotund ponies where the back of the saddle has the tendency to flip up or move. It allows for an adjustable anchor point at the rear of the saddle to hold it snug and even, without unnecessary digging into your horse’s back.

If you have one of these saddles this is a feature that I check each time I do a saddle fit to ensure optimisation of fit!

Week 12: The importance of saddle seat balance.

Rider balance in the saddle is one of the most important aspects in the sport and in the process of saddle fitting. In order for a horse to be able to effectively carry the weight of its human rider and perform to its highest optimal ability it is essential that the riders weight is balanced evenly laterally (side to side) over the middle of the horse’s rib cage. Too much rider weight over the front of the saddle can block the horse movements in the shoulders, reduce impulsion/lift and cause short stepping. Too much rider weight over the rear of the saddle can cause significant lumbar pain, inability to step through and in extreme cases pigrooting and bucking.

People sometimes think that buying a saddle with an adjustable gullet is the answer to all issues. Your horse needs more wither clearance, so what do we do - narrow the saddle gullet? Yes … and no. Yes, narrowing the gullet plate will cause the saddle tree to sit higher in the horses shoulders and thus give more clearance area between the wither and the saddle. No, because if by raising the front of the saddle it may unbalance the rider, putting an undue amount of pressure on the rear of the saddle and cause pain in the lumbar region. This is why when we as saddle fitters are assessing the fit of your saddle we look at numerous options to improve the fit. This could mean changing the gullet plate, changing flocking, adding shims in the saddle, changing the saddle pad used, adding a fleece numnah with shims, changing the girth strapping or changing the girth used.

Moral of the story - don’t be a couch potato. Keep your weight centred and ensure your saddle fit is checked regularly to maintain optimal balance and performance. Your horses will appreciate it!!
