End-of-year festivities are when we eat more decadent foods than we usually would. And while overindulging might give us a tummy ache, it can prove deadly for our pets. 🙀🎄🍽️

Pancreatitis in animals is often triggered by a fatty meal, such as leftover Christmas ham or pork crackling. Plus, ingesting other festive foods such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, garlic, and onion is toxic to pets. 🍫🍇🍖

So, don’t be tempted to offer your furry friend tidbits or treats from the festive table, and encourage your family and guests to keep their leftovers away from your pets - pancreatitis and food toxicity are not invited to this year’s Christmas or New Years Party!

Tip: If you want to treat your pet over the festive period, stick with pet-safe treats such as cooked pumpkin and small amounts of lean meats. 🎁

Keep your pet's microchip details up to date. 😸🖥️🐶

If they get lost, your pet's microchip is like their passport home, so their details must be current. You should update your pet's microchip details whenever you move house or change your phone number.

To check your pet's microchip details, enter your pet's microchip number into www.petaddress.com.au, and it will tell you what registry your pet's chip is registered on. If you need to determine your pet's chip number, call us. 👨‍⚕️📞

Always take care when walking your dog on pavements and roads during hot days. ☀️🐕🚶

Concrete paths and bitumen roads absorb heat and can become scalding at high temperatures, so as the weather heats up, the risk of heat-related injuries also increases. 🐾🔥

To protect your dog’s paws from burns in hot weather, it’s best to walk either early or late in the day, when the sun is lower in the sky.

If in doubt, feel the ground with the back of your hand to check how hot it is.

We always recommend that outdoor cats are on year-round flea, tick and worming prevention to keep them healthy. 🏡🐈‍

However, if you’re going away, even indoor-only cats should be given comprehensive flea, tick and worming preventative medication before their cattery stay. ❌

This will reduce their risk of picking up a parasitic infection. If you aren’t sure what preventative suits your cat, pop down to the clinic, and one of our nurses can help you. 🧑🏻

Holidays are approaching, so many of us dream of our next getaway… 🏝️

But before you go away, remember to stock up on your pet’s medications! 💊

Not all medicines are stored at our clinic, so give us a call at least a week before you go away so we can ensure we have the correct drug in stock.

Remember, if your pet hasn’t had a checkup or review in the previous 6 months, they might need to see the vet before further medication can be dispensed.

Don’t let your pet go without this holiday season - call our clinic to secure your order today! 👩‍⚕️💙😸

Should you give your dog bones? 🦴 🐶

While some dogs may be able to happily chew raw bones with no issues, many others will encounter problems.

Fractured teeth and oral trauma, colon impactions, intestinal obstructions and perforations are some side effects vets see from feeding raw bones.

If you’re contemplating feeding bones to your dogs, talk to one of our vets first.

Remember: NEVER feed cooked bones to your dog; the risks of them splintering are too great. ❌ 🍗

Ask our vets whether feeding your dog bones is worthwhile. 👩‍⚕️ 📞

Good news everyone: You can help your pet cope with noise phobias! 🎉💥

While it’s normal for pets to dislike loud noises, unfortunately, some are more sensitive than others.

Fireworks and storms are common noise phobias, and while they cause fear, anxiety and stress when activated, they can also put your pet’s life at risk if they escape and run unthinkingly away from the scary sounds.

Fortunately, your pet doesn’t have to suffer from noise phobias. Please make an appointment with one of our vets, who can help your pet live without fear. 📞

They may be popular for their cute snub-noses, but did you know dogs with short faces (known as brachycephalic breeds) have a higher risk of heatstroke? 🥵☀️

Dogs like pugs, French bulldogs and English bulldogs can’t reduce their heat load as effectively as other breeds, so it’s essential to be aware of the common signs of heatstroke, particularly as the weather warms up.

Signs of heatstroke include:
🐶 Excessive panting
💧 Increased salivation
😵 Collapse
🧱 brick-red gums

In the unfortunate event of an urgent vet visit, we may ask your permission for emergency stabilisation of your pet.

This refers to any immediate treatment required to support your pet’s breathing, oxygenation, and blood circulation, as well as managing any emergency conditions such as active seizures, extreme pain, or rapid bleeding.

Usually, this will require us to quickly move your pet to the hospital treatment room to administer urgent medical support before further assessing their general condition.

Rest assured that during an emergency vet visit, our experienced team will do everything possible to support you and your pet.

If your cat has been in an accident, they are likely frightened, in pain and potentially aggressive and uncooperative.

To transport an injured cat, it’s safest to gently wrap them in a thick blanket or quilt (to protect you from scratches and bites and soften any handling discomfort for them) before lifting them into a secure crate or carrier.

Many cats will feel soothed by a light towel placed over their carrier for transport (provided they can still get good airflow).

If in doubt, phone our helpful team for advice. We’re cat-handling pros!

Are you worried your pet might have ingested a toxic substance?
It’s always best to phone us straight away for advice! Depending on the toxin type and quantity, we may recommend an immediate clinic visit so we can induce emesis in your pet (i.e. medically persuade them to vomit!). If performed promptly enough, this can prevent or minimise any toxic effects on your pet. Otherwise, we may recommend gastric lavage (like stomach pumping) or other protective therapies.

If your pet’s forbidden meal has occurred after hours, you can also contact the Animal Poisons Helpline for urgent advice.

16/11/2023

Unfortunately, brachycephalic (snub-nosed) dogs are at an increased risk of sudden breathing difficulties, particularly if exercised in very hot or humid weather.

This happens due to the increased airflow resistance through their compressed airways, which can lead to the swelling and/or collapse of their windpipes during periods of increased breathing.

If your pet shows any symptoms of respiratory distress, we recommend immediate veterinary assessment, with cool air-conditioning en route. Symptoms include:
🐶 dark red or purplish-tinged gums or tongue
🐶 very harsh breathing sounds
🐶 generalised weakness

For more information on keeping your brachycephalic pet healthy, consult our experienced team.

14/11/2023

Just like human babies, puppies and kittens can be hit harder by infectious diseases. This is because puppies and kittens have an immature immune system. They lose heat more easily, become dehydrated more quickly, and develop low blood sugar more rapidly.

We recommend a prompt check-up if your puppy or kitten misses more than one meal or seems "a bit under the weather".

But your young pets needs emergency assessment if:
🐶 They have profuse or bloody vomiting or diarrhoea
🐶 They aren’t drinking,
🐶 They seem slow, sluggish and tired

Ouch! Your pet has been bitten by another dog – should they be seen as an emergency case?

We recommend urgent treatment if your pet:
🐶 Was picked up and shaken by the other dog
🐶 Is steadily dripping blood
🐶 Has multiple bite wounds
🐶 Appears weak or lethargic afterwards

It’s best for your pet to be assessed promptly, as even relatively small-looking puncture wounds may become badly infected beneath the skin.

With some wound care and pain relief (and sometimes antibiotics), your pet will feel better in no time!

Few things are as worrying as seeing your pet suffer from a seizure.

Seizures may be caused by problems within a pet’s brain (such as trauma, inflammation, infection, or tumours) or issues in the body affecting brain health (such as liver problems or very low blood sugar).

Any pet that seizures unexpectedly should be assessed by a veterinarian. If a pet suffers a seizure lasting more than two minutes or has more than one seizure within a few days, it should be seen as an emergency. If you have concerns about your pet and seizures, please phone our experienced team.

On occasion, our team unfortunately sees cases of haemoabdomen, a condition where a pet’s abdomen begins to fill with blood.

Pets with haemoabdomen usually develop symptoms such as pale gums, generalised weakness, and sometimes a swollen belly.

Pet’s gums should be a salmon pink colour, and when pressed with a finger, the resultant white blanching should “pink up” again within two seconds.

Rest assured that should your pet show any symptoms of unwellness, our team is ready to rapidly diagnose and treat their condition.

Did you know that, just like humans, dogs can experience cognitive decline as they get older? ‘Doggy dementia’ can result in worrying behaviour such as night pacing and howling, increased anxiety, incontinence and other unwanted symptoms. Fortunately, some things can be done to slow the progress of this disease. Medications are available to lessen symptoms and improve cognition. Environmental changes can help your dog adapt to their new normal. Talk to our veterinary team about supportive changes you can make to accommodate for canine dementia.

Taking your cat to the vet doesn’t have to be stressful. While cats generally feel most comfortable at home, you can take steps to lessen their anxiety during a vet visit. Get them used to their cat carrier by leaving it out for them to sleep in if they want. Handle your cat regularly, including running your hands over their body and picking up their feet. If you have a particularly anxious cat, chat with one of our vets about medications that might help.

As a general rule, most dogs don’t require regular ear cleaning. However, some dogs have ears that need a little extra attention. Dogs prone to ear infections, or those with floppy ears or hairy ear ca**ls, may require additional cleaning. It’s important to only clean your dog’s ears if needed. Otherwise, you could increase the chance of ear infections. If you aren’t sure what’s suitable for your dog, contact our friendly team.

Did you know that more than a third of all cats in Australia are overweight? Indoor, desexed cats are at the highest risk due to increased sedentary behaviour. Next time you pat your cat, run your hands along its chest. If you can’t feel their ribs without applying firm pressure, and they have a pronounced, low and wobbly abdominal flap, they might be overweight. Chat with our team today about ways to get your cat back to a healthy weight.

11/10/2023

Cats should be on regular flea and tick prevention to help keep them healthy. We recommend giving flea and tick prevention to pets year-round. Cats, even those that don’t go outside often, should be protected with a monthly or three-monthly treatment, depending on the product. Any cats living or visiting a paralysis tick zone must be on tick prevention year-round to help prevent tick paralysis from developing. However, even with tick prevention, we still recommend daily body checks for ticks to reduce risk.

Did you know that more than 40% of Australian dogs are overweight? A quick way to tell if your dog is in an ideal body condition (or not) is to run your hands along their chest and waist. They are likely in good body condition if you can feel their ribs (but not too prominently) without pressing firmly and have a defined tucked-in waist. If you aren’t sure, our team is always happy to assess your pet’s condition and develop a plan to get them to an ideal shape.

When was the last time your cat was wormed? Was it more than 3 months ago? If so, they are probably overdue! Regular worming of your cat helps keep them healthy. However, we understand how hard it can be to tablet some cats, so we're here to make it easy.

Either make an appointment with one of our nurses who can help give the tablet to your cat, or ask about alternative treatments you can administer at home, such as spot-on anti-parasitic products, but don't miss your cat's regular worming treatment!

Vaccinations aren’t just for young puppies. It’s essential to keep your dog’s vaccinations updated throughout their life. Deadly diseases like Canine Parvovirus continue to lurk in our neighbourhoods, and respiratory illnesses that make up the disease Kennel Cough are continuously circulating amongst the general dog population.

If you aren’t sure whether your dog’s vaccinations are up to date, call us to check.

Pets affected by allergies commonly show symptoms such as face rubbing, paw licking and bottom scooting. They may also develop frequent bacterial or yeast infections, resulting in inflamed, sore skin patches (known as hot spots), recurrent ear infections, or darker skin areas with a ye**ty smell. If your pet experiences repetitive skin troubles, it’s best to organise an assessment from our dermatologically diligent team so that we can pause that paw-licking!

If your dog seems to overindulge in bottom-dragging behaviour, it’s probably best to hurry up to the clinic and have them examined by our veterinary team! Dogs most commonly develop itchy bottoms due to intestinal worms, blocked a**l glands or allergies. During your pet’s consultation, our vets can check and express your pet’s a**l glands, confirm the effectiveness of their parasite control program, and assess them for the likelihood of any underlying allergies. With the proper treatment, your dog will be comfortably back up on all four paws in no time!

21/09/2023

Whilst all dogs carry Demodex mites in low numbers, some pets may develop demodectic mange due to genetic- or health-related differences in immunity allowing the excessive proliferation of mites within their skin. Pets affected with demodectic mange will have bald, scaly areas of skin, either in small patches or more extensively over their body. Luckily, many veterinary flea and tick prevention products also effectively treat Demodex mites! For more information on preventing parasitic diseases in your pet, consult our parasite-proficient team.

Flea allergy dermatitis involves a hypersensitivity (allergy) to the saliva of flea bites, meaning one little flea bite can trigger significant skin inflammation! Pets with unmanaged flea allergy dermatitis tend to develop itchy, red skin patches (particularly around the rump, tail base, hindlegs and tummy), which may become infected. For personalised advice on the easiest and most effective parasite prevention options for your pet, consult our team – we're clued up on critters!

Feline acne usually occurs on the chin and manifests as thickened red, oozy or scabby skin, sometimes with visible blackheads (clogged skin follicles). This skin condition is best assessed and treated by our skin-savvy veterinarians, as affected cats may require prescription antibacterial or anti-inflammatory treatments to settle the condition and then long-term management. If your cat shows any symptoms of skin irritation, book a prompt check-up with our veterinary team – we’ll soon have your cat’s skin feline fine again!

Food-related allergies in cats can lead to recurrent symptoms of skin itchiness or gut upset. If you suspect your cat has food allergies, we may recommend a hypoallergenic dietary trial consisting of a novel or hydrolysed protein diet. A novel protein diet contains a single type of protein your cat has never eaten, while a hydrolysed protein diet contains modified protein that is unlikely to trigger an allergic response. For further food recommendations for your cat, consult our veterinary team!
