Vitamin D deficiency is a condition that we see more often in alpacas compared to any other livestock. This deficiency typically occurs over the winter and spring months due to a lack of exposure to ultraviolet light.

A vitamin D deficiency can cause the bone disorder rickets which is a very painful condition that if left untreated can lead to stunted growth or calcification of the bones.

With alpacas being such stoic animals who do their best to hide any signs of illness, it’s important to understand the key risk factors and symptoms of rickets, as well as knowing how you can prevent the condition from occurring.

Baby alpacas (known as crias) are most at risk of developing rickets.

Pregnant and lactating alpacas are also more susceptible to rickets and can pass on their own mineral deficiencies to their young.

Alpacas with darker fiber are more likely to be deficient in vitamin D, leading to a higher incidence of rickets compared to those with lighter fiber.

Symptoms of rickets in alpacas include:
🦙 Lameness
🦙 Hunched back
🦙 Weight loss
🦙 Skeletal abnormalities
🦙 Bowed legs
🦙 Laying down or sitting more than usual
🦙 Fractures

Treatment is typically done with vitamin D injections, we can also provide them with Vitamin D supplements during the winter / spring months. It is possible to overdose with too much vitamin D, so it is important to always consult with wit us before commencing any supplementation program.

🌟🐴 Lets talk faecal egg counts in horses! 🌟🐴

Preventing disease through targeted worming is an essential part of keeping our horses health in tip top shape! In the past like dogs and cats, horses were wormed at set intervals, unfortunately this has lead to an increasing level of resistance to worming preventatives.

This is why we now recommend regular faecal egg count testing as it’s a vital part of ensuing our horses are on a protocol that is specifically tailored to them. To make the testing process easier we have facilities here in the clinic so we can test for you!
If left untreated, a worm infestation can cause a range of health issues, including stomach and gastrointestinal problems, liver damage and colic.

A faecal egg count allows us to identify the amount and type of parasite eggs that are potentially inside their digestive tract; by understanding their parasite load, we can then provide recommendations for a worming schedule, as well as forming a baseline for future testing.

We recommend testing 3-4 times a year and it’s important to re-test 2 weeks after giving preventatives, this allows us to determine if the medications are working.

The two most important factors when it comes to collecting a sample are freshness, and if you have more than one horse, identifying which horse it belongs to!

🐴 Label a plastic bag with your horse’s name and your own contact details.

🐴 Collect a small amount of poo that is fresh (i.e., still warm) using a glove, place it into the plastic bag and seal it.

🐴 Try and grab a few small amounts from different sections of the manure, as parasite eggs aren’t always evenly distributed.

🐴 If you can’t drop it off the same day, keep the sample refrigerated until you can.

For more information or to have a sample tested, please give us a call on 8318 1801.

🌟🐐 10 interesting facts about goats! 🐐🌟

🐐 We know their pupils are horizontal, but did you know there’s a reason for this?
It allows them a wider field of vision to keep an eye out for predators!

🐐 They are rather intelligent animals and can recognise the different emotions in their companions just by hearing a single sound.

🐐 Baby goats are called kids and when a female gives birth it’s called kidding.

🐐 Did you know they are born with teeth? How odd is that!

🐐 There are over 200 recognised and domestic breeds of goats.

🐐 Goats are quite fussy when it comes to their food but are also extremely resourceful which allows them to survive off of small amounts of food at a time.

🐐 Goats a very aware of human behaviour and can recognise the difference between a happy human and an angry human.

🐐 Like dogs, goats can be taught their name and learn to come when called.

🐐 They dislike water and will avoid stepping in puddles or getting caught in the rain.

🐐 Goats are very social animals and can easily become depressed if separated from their companions, they also aren’t flock orientated like sheep are.

🐑🌟 10 interesting facts about sheep! 🌟🐑

🐑 There are over 1,200 different breeds of domestic sheep!

🐑 They have scent glands on their faces and their hooves.

🐑 They have a 270–320-degree field of vision, which means they can nearly see the whole way around themselves!

🐑 Despite popular opinion, studies have shown that sheep are rather intelligent and can recognise up to 50 different sheep faces as well as human faces.

🐑 They can read facial expressions and differentiate between a smile and a frown.

🐑 Highly social animals and can form strong bonds with each other.

🐑 Lambs are able to walk within minutes after they are born.

🐑 Sheep are herbivores, this means they strictly live on vegetation such as seeds, grass and plants.

🐑 Their pupils are rectangular in shape.

🐑 Sheep wool never stops growing which why the need to be sheard at least once a year to avoid becoming over grown and matted.

Cameron Veterinary Services was established to provide high quality mobile veterinary services to the Williamstown, Gawler, Mount Pleasant, Murray Bridge, Adelaide Hills and surrounding districts. Here at CVS we have a strong focus on Equine Veterinary and in particular Equine Dental services. However, we offer a range of clinical services for production animals as well. Dr Lachlan Cameron is the owner and primary veterinarian for the CVS. Dr Lachie has extensive equine and mixed animal training having worked for a large equine referral clinic in Toowoomba, QLD. Were he routinely looked after numerous racing stables and performance horse studs. He then proceeded to work primarily as an all species veterinarian based in Woodside in the Adelaide Hills. With him Dr Lachie brings a wealth of experience in providing veterinary services for a variety of both medical and surgical procedures in horses and production animal species. The primary goal of CVS is to provide high quality, patient orientated veterinary care to your paddock ornament, beloved pet or performance athlete.
