Reactivity often stems from fear, frustration, excitement or dominance, not a lack of training.
But there’s good news! You can manage and improve these behaviours with 4 effective tips:
1. Stay calm: Your dog picks up on your emotions so make sure you take deep breaths to help you remain calm and assertive.
2. Create distance: Create a safe distance and move away from the trigger to give your dog space to relax and regulate.
3. Use positive reinforcement: Consistently reward your dog for displaying calm behaviour and ignoring their triggers.
4. Stay in control: Ensure you have full control of your dog’s movement. Use suitable training tools such as a slip leash, front clip harness or head halter, to help you provide better control and redirect your dog’s attention and focus towards you.
