🐾 St Kilda’s losing its dog-friendly soul

In the last 6 months, we’ve lost three of our favourite spots to grab a drink with our dogs:

🍻 Freddie Wimpoles – forced to stop allowing dogs after council enforcement

🍷 Newmarket Hotel – shut down

🍺 The Local Taphouse – now banning dogs, even with a fully covered outdoor area that doesn’t lead into indoor dining

All of this in the City of Port Phillip, one of Australia’s most dog-dense councils, with around 410 dogs per square kilometre.

At the same time? Shopfronts sit empty. Businesses struggle to stay open. And locals just want a spot where they can grab a wine without leaving the dog at home.

Yes, the restrictions come from FSANZ, not the council. But councils can still step up. They can back local businesses. They can challenge outdated policies. And they can use their voice to push for change.

Because letting dogs into thoughtfully managed spaces isn’t a health crisis. The UK figured this out years ago. Germany too. Australia’s still catching up.

Australia’s ready. We just need someone brave enough to open the door.
