If I had feathers, I'd be stress-plucking 😝

On Wednesday, one of my conures slipped past me and zoomed out into the urban wild of South Toowoomba. One of the first things I did was submit a report on ParrotAlert.com. This is an amazing service.

Fortunately, I was able to get her back but it really brought home to me the importance of:
* Wing clipping. Parrots molt regularly and new feathers come through quickly.
* Micro-chipping. Vets will scan parrots for a microchip (much like dog registration).
* Ensuring there are extra protections such as double doors in place for aviary and un-tamed parrots.

First load of pears, lemons and capsicums went into the food dehydrator today! Thank you to Patobella Books for investing in my little business. This dehydrator will better maintain the nutrients of fruit and vegetables for parrot dry food mixes and parrot treats!

Can parrots eat Lemons? Generally, I avoid giving my flock citrus however a little fresh lemon, mandarin or orange pulp from time to time is ok. You could add small bits of dried lemon to forage mixes to create interest.
The lemons pictured here are destined for cocktails, Xmas punch and craft ;-)

Sunday afternoon treats for my flock. I started with:
* cooked sweet potato.
* raw zucchini.
* mango.
To thicken it up, I added mixed quinoa, red lentil flour (organic), paprika, cinnamon, turmeric, chamomile flowers, ground dried orange and rooibos. The mixture was still quite wet so I added a heap of coconut.
It doesn't taste too bad. The mango flavour comes through nicely.
Now to turn this into lovely little parrot biscuits!
If you want a pack, I could spare 2 or 3. Just send me a message and I'll package them up for you. $5 per pack will do the trick for this mix :) pick up in sth Toowoomba.

Random parrot trivia: Did you know all lentils should be cooked before giving to your parrots?

Did you know that there are lots of types of flowers parrots can have? With Spring just around the corner, now is a great time to start planting and harvesting flowers for your flock. I'll have some to sell soon so you don't have to worry about giving your parrot any toxic flowers 🌻🌼

If you don't have a lot of space or time, try planting sunflowers. Parrots will gladly nibble on the petals (and of course, the seeds). Just remember not too many as each sunflower seed is a bit like us eating a cheeseburger. Too many seeds can lead to liver damage.

Unwell birds seem to find me. Found a red-rumped parrot this morning.
Sadly, the little fellow was far too injured to recover. So sad. Looked like an attack - most likely a cat as these darlings spend a lot of time foraging in grasses. He has a mate somewhere who will be missing him.
Learn about these beauties here: https://birdlife.org.au/bird-profile/red-rumped-parrot?fbclid=IwAR3mThA3IoeJZcO5QWYa4FWBBkJrgEob1RDLgOQsyyLLRZu_YgLeNPVKKpo

I have sorted all of my parrot's feathers they have molted into sizes. From the tiniest, itty bitty feathers to the biggest tail feathers. My gosh they are all gorgeous. These were a couple of pics I sent my partner. I will have to take some more out in the sunshine. They're absolutely stunning.
Now they are sorted, I can start turning some into jewellery! :-D

Taking on the ‘Parrot Mess’

In mid-2019, my flock somehow tripled in size. It happens, right? With all of the extra chirps, screams, munching, foraging, flying and feathered love, came a whole lot of mess. Millet spray seed, pellets, seeds, seed husks, fruit and vegetables...everywhere. Oh and poo in my hair, down the back of my neck, in my bra. You know how it goes.

I went online to find no mess parrot feeders and, I bought one. At the time, I was happy to pay ANYTHING to reduce the cleaning. But, then I realised I needed one for every cage... No way. I could make these.... And I could do it better.

Enter my mother and the flock grandmother. Mum is a brilliant father - in that she fits absolutely no stereotype for typical mothers. She became the perfect partner in design. I hesitantly put a little post up on a few Facebook groups, unsure if I would be alone in my parrot-mess. I thought that surely I was missing something obvious.

Apparently not! Parrot owners are hanging out for feeders of various sizes that are affordable and do the job. How are these not readily available?
