Kye has started doing a trim/shoeing run to Wagga and surrounds. A change of plans tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday 21st) means he doesn’t have to rush back now and has had a couple of places open up on the list for trims or one more set of shoes.

If there’s enough interest he will consider doing more runs down that way on a regular basis. Pm us for further details!

Toonga Mocca is taking everything in her stride in Toowoomba! A lovely cross of both HSH and AQHA Campdrafting royalty, she’s sure to make an impression under saddle.
Being by Grit, she encompasses both the outstanding Hazelwood Coraline and Chevin Ivory on the top side. And if that’s not enough, her dam is an own daughter of Acres Destiny.

Kye has handled Mocca from an early age. She leads well, will stand to have her feet picked up, lunges and has started some basic ground work that will help her to excel down the track when she is started under saddle.

Mocca sells Saturday morning and is available for viewing tomorrow.

Kye is very proud to present these 3 lovely horses at the Nutrien Supreme Sale in Toowoomba next week on behalf of Des and Pat Castine.
We think so highly of Mocca that we’ve purchased her mother and we’re expecting a full sibling in November.

The lucky bidders on these 3 will have a world of fun ahead of them 🙌🏼

Now that the Nutrien high has worn off it’s business as usual around here. The beautiful CO2 sold for $20,000 and we can’t thank Des and Pat Campdraft horses Toonga enough for entrusting Kye to break in, train and prep another of their horses for the sale.

We have a couple of places coming up for breakers or trainers in March so feel free to reach out and get your horse off to a great start in their ridden career!

🟩 Lot 184 - TOONGA CO TWO
TOONGA GRIT...last year he sold 2 of his progeny through the sale, this year only one. But she's a beauty. We had her every which way, and quite frankly she was the only one who consistently had her ears pricked, thoroughly compliant, a beautiful 3yo mare ready to go on with. See her details in the comments.

Go see her at Stable: 296

Owners Des & Pat Castine are proud supporters of the Nutrien Classic, supplying wine to the winners. Just quietly, we can vouch for the quality of both their horses and their wine. 😁

The sweet CO2 sells tomorrow morning. Check out her pre-work here and contact Kye on 0439 974 669 for any more info. Whoever takes her home is a lucky one for sure!

Kye has had the pleasure of working with this filly from day one. He broke her in back in 2022 and has brought her along slowly since. With plenty of miles over winter at Rainmore Station as well as stints as a work horse back here in the green country. She’s been spelled throughout and it won’t be long before she’s ready to tackle some big jobs. She’s also a real sweety and super easy to have around.
Catch her and Kye in the sale ring early Friday morning 🐴

We’re so blessed to have the ultimate ‘slow miles setup’ right here at our back door. Today this lovely Traditional Acres mare had exposure to creek crossings, pine critters and even a touch of cattle work. Nice way to spend Christmas Eve 🎄🎉

While Kye is definitely the face of Southern Spur, I’m quietly working in the background to make sure our paddocks are full and our bank account is empty (and I’m excellent at it, even if Kye spends most of his time creating new paddocks and rolling his eyes at me).

So for this one I present to you a happy girls ramblings on hopes and dreams..

Nearly 7 years ago I paid attention to the Landmark Classic Sale, as it was known then, for the first time. The horse genetics world had fixated itself in my brain by this point and I was obsessed, spending copious amounts of time on the ASH and AQHA studbooks.

The One Stylish Pepto’s, Seligman Spins and Conman’s price point was well and truly set after years of successful progeny by all three, and the bottom end was averaging around $30k, leaving me wondering how I would ever come up with the money to buy one given my $55k yearly salary at the time. I knew I wanted to breed horses for myself and I knew which lines I wanted to include but the entirety of it felt like a far away dream.

A couple of years after that I considered buying a service fee to Seligman Spin but I also knew I didn’t have a good enough mare to justify the idea. Thankfully that worry was set aside when Donnel Park offered for sale a lovely buckskin weanling c**t out of a novice Hazelwood Conman mare in ‘Redrawn Glamour’. I was instantly smitten and every penny I had went to getting him on the truck south.

2 years ago we struck gold again. A gelding by Times Up and out of an OSP mare was offered for sale privately and I figured it couldn’t hurt to message the owner to find out if she would be interested in selling the mare as well. Luck had it that she planned on doing exactly that and before we knew it she was headed south also to the block of land that Kye and I had just bought. Unfortunately a nasty paddock injury had rendered her unrideable in her futurity year but her type, breeding and incredible temperament combined to make her an asset in the broodmare band.

After 4 unsuccessful breedings, many excited trips to (and disappointing trips from) Berragoon for scans, some medical interventions and a late scan to discover she actually was pregnant (not just fat 🤣), we finally had a baby on the way combining all of that cow chasing blood I dreamed of many moons ago.

This morning we woke to an early surprise in this little bay filly, I guess Meg couldn’t wait to give us our wedding present, aptly named ‘Honeymoon’ given that’s where we should be right now! To say we’re a little stoked is definitely an understatement.
Registered name to follow when we think of something but I absolutely could not wait to share the pics.

Stick with your dreams people, a lot of the time they don’t happen overnight but when they do, they’re worth the wait 🙌🏼

Honeymoon: ‘Spin King’ - Seligman Spin/ Hazelwood Conman x ‘Megastar’ - One Stylish Pepto/ Doc’s Smokin Oak (DFO).

Long time no post! Kye came back from the hot country to a full book (and paddocks) of horses.

This giant baby is Jet, AKA the face of well handled foals making easy and safe riding horses. Jet’s owner bought him from Painted Meadows Stud as a weanling who had already been taught to lead, load on the float and have his legs handled. He’s been a dream to start under saddle and so far hasn’t been phased by anything proving that a solid foundation starts long before the breaking process.

As Jet is a 2yo and the grand plan for him is to be a safe ladies allrounder he’s going to see plenty of slow miles around the farm and through the pines for exposure then he’ll head home for a break to soak it all in before coming back later in the year. 🦄

15.2hh, 8yo black gelding with a wealth of breeding behind him including a double cross of Romeo, Docs Freckles Oak and Elliot’s Creek Cadet.

Tides has been competed by a lady for two years across a variety of disciplines and is an open challenge finalist. He is a bold and forward horse that loves to jump, is confident over obstacles and has a huge presence in the show ring. He has had two campdraft starts both of which resulted in outside scores in the low 80's.
Tides has also been to a number of clinics including stockmans challenge, cattle work and natural horsemanship. He has been used to pony breakers, as a packhorse and also a practice shoeing horse as he'll stand all day. We regularly lend him to a 70 year old man who adores him to ride around the farm during our busy periods.
Tides is regularly worked on cattle and has done plenty of mustering (he’s just come off a two month stint mustering in QLD). He is an athletic, comfortable gelding who will go all day but can be left for months and safely ridden off.

Sells Saturday morning. If you’re looking for a safe allrounder he’s not one to miss.

Another day, another bay! 5 out of 6 of the horses loaded on the truck to come up here are bay. Even the lone grey mare started out bay before she greyed out.
This young filly owned by Andrew Cotter is by Halls Chickenman, one of the great Hazelwood Conman sons. Half of these young horses have Conman as a grand sire and given his impact on the industry I’d say we’ll be seeing many great bay cowhorses to come.

You definitely can’t beat station miles for young horses. Back at the beginning of June Kye loaded the truck up with 6 of our lovely clients horses and headed to Rainmore Station in central QLD. Plenty of steady miles behind large mobs of cattle has had such a huge impact on these young horses maturity and confidence, setting them up so well for the future.
Many of the client horses Kye took up were broken in by him earlier in the year, spelled and then brought back in for this trip. We’re absolutely thrilled with how they’re going and we know their owners are going to be stoked when they get them back next month.

It feels like campdraft season has only just finished and already we’re gearing up for a big 2023/2024 season! Kye has swapped putting them around on Snip for plenty of long steady miles mustering on the breakers in Central QLD.

As much as he’s loving the opportunity to get such a solid foundation on a truck load of client horses, I think he’ll be very happy to be reunited with the big girl come September.

What a massive weekend we had at The Man From Snowy River Bush Festival!

Kye was on board everybody’s favourite mare Jayem Snipellieta, owned by the Castine’s at Campdraft horses Toonga. They made an admirable and consistent team, missing out on the finals by just half a point! An incredible effort for a mare who had never jumped and had very little experience with obstacles prior to the event.

Their campdrafting experience shone through in the cattle handling, with a big 89 in the dairy round. An 87 in the beef round secured their spot as winners of this event 🏆

Kye also took out the highest point novice rider 🙌🏼

It sure is wet out! Thankfully wet weather doesn’t slow things down around here with the incredible facilities at Toonga offering an undercover round yard, arena and yards.
This means we can all appreciate the rain and our lovely clients can relax knowing that their horses are being worked no matter what the weather is doing.

Kye will have two spots becoming available for breaking or training in April.

We hope everyone has recovered from the whirlwind week that is Nutrien! There’s no rest for the wicked as they say and Kye got straight back into it with the Southern Spur breakers and trainers last week.

There was a few sad faces about the place after the sale of the beautiful Toonga Corryong but we couldn’t be more pleased with the result and can’t wait to see him back in the classic next year 🙌🏼
