This is a blog page for the daily life at Kelpie Cottage, it includes some education/ advice & information for all kelpie owners. My hobby is to breed beautiful low energy pet/companion kelpies ONLY. I am registered with the WKC and have an approved registered Victorian Domestic Animal Business (DAB) so puppy owners have peace of mind when buying.
ALL of the kelpies on this page are either Kelpie Cottage owned, bred or rescued. I have 4 generations of Myrindah Kelpies living here in Kelpie heaven, some being retired, some current breeders and also future breeders adding to 11 beautiful pet kelpies of most of the colors the Australian Working Kelpie comes in.

I have a strict criteria to be met to own one of my pet kelpies. I can have a 12 month waiting list on average as this is only a hobby and l only breed 3 litters per year, when the demand is there.
For the process for a Kelpie Cottage puppy please follow the below steps :)
STEP 1.
After you have contacted me via email, l will send you some information and a puppy application. When l receive your application back, I will organise with you to have a Meet & Greet day here, so you can see all our KC kelpies, how they are raised, environment, natures/temperaments, size, colors and choose the parents you prefer. Also for me to confirm you are the right person to own a kelpie of mine, then you can go on my waiting list for a pup if you wish too.
When the girls pregnancy is confirmed l will be in touch with people on my waiting list for a holding deposit to be paid to secure a pup. This $100 deposit is NON REFUNDABLE, unless l don’t have a pup for you. It can be carried over to another litter if you wish.
STEP 2
Then a Cuddle/Info & Education day when your pup is 4weeks old is held, to make the transition as easy as possible for both the pup and new owner. ALL owners are emailed extensive information to help with raising. On this day l will go through a heap of information in regards to crate & toilet training, diet, bathing, nail trimming, toys, toxic foods/plants etc. Puppy preschools.
ALL pups are health guaranteed under the code of practice for pet welfare in Victoria.
Kelpie Cottage also provides 24/7 aftercare for the life of each pup for advice/help/recommendations, eg diet, meds, minor injuries, boarding places, basically anything l can help with.
All my dogs are registered with the WKC, as pet kelpies, they are in a special appendix as they are NOT working kelpies. I have references from owners Australia wide. Most of the time ALL my pups are sold prior to breeding, read on for more information:)
INTRODUCTION TO KELPIE COTTAGE ~
My special hobby is to breed ‘family pet kelpies/companions’ to give other families the chance to own one of the best dog breeds in the world, my dogs are bred to be ‘city slicker kelpies’. Pet/show Kelpies have been around since the 1960’s, but kelpies are mostly known as the Australian iconic ‘working dog’.
All my Kelpies are low energy driven companions, well suited as a pet for an active family though to retired people who are looking for their best mate...... providing that they are totally part of their families lives.
My kelpies go to the main street or shopping centre to have coffee, markets, festivals where they are comfortable with all dogs/people/noises etc
My Kelpies do not require any more exercise than most other dog breeds. My Kelpies are known for being obedient, smart, calm, quiet and content relaxed happy dogs, that will be as quiet as you want or be as active as you want them to be. The most important thing in owning a Kelpie (or any dog) is human contact and mental stimulation, which is easy with ball games, walks, car trips, and coming inside the family home, they love to just be with you, but, are also happy enough to be in the backyard by themselves when needed. My pups make fantastic pets, they get nothing but the best start in life totally nurtured and socialised before they leave here, and fantastic owners continue this to have well adjusted pet Kelpies for life...read on for raising information. RAISING OF PUPS AT KELPIE COTTAGE
My pups make wonderful pets as they are whelped and raised in the family home, used to all household noises, vacuums, TV, stereo etc. Handled from birth, to give you a well adjusted puppy from the start. This is important for obedience and training and most important for a family pet. I clip puppies nails and weigh regularly, brush coats, and wormed at 2/4/6 & 8wks of age. They are all vaccinated and microchipped at 6wks of age and ready to leave from 8wks old, as legally required in Victoria.
I recommend puppy schools and obedience training with all our pups. The main thing l ask of owners is to teach your pup good manners, the basics of: sit,come,stay,wait,taking food from their mouths etc. All training of my dogs is done without force but firmly, with heaps of praise rather than treats so as not to lead to any weight problems. Our adult kelpies do get a lot of exercise due to us living on a property, however, we used to live in the suburbs of Melbourne with our first two pet Kelpies and found they were just as content to be with us, as well as play ball, car trips, parks, footy ovals, the beach as most will love to swim in any water. They love to spend time with us, talking to them, watching TV with us, l often say to people even if we lived on 1000 acres the Kelpies would still want to be at our side. We take them in pairs, the mental stimulation of being taken out somewhere is vital for a happy Kelpie. Kelpies are an incredibly sociable breed and love nothing more than meeting people and other animals. Our Kelpies are known for being very calm and chilled and it's purely the way they are raised as they want for nothing, and their parents are the same, ALL the Kelpies here are treated like family, as all dogs should be. If you have the time, you will be rewarded with a loyal loving fast learning dog who will fit into a family environment and be the best dog you have had or likely to have ever owned. A Kelpie is a truly amazing dog in its ability to understand your requests and its willingness to please.
